Ladies and gentlemen: Welcome to Harbin. This is the season of the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, I sincerely hope that all of you have a good time here and enjoy visit to Harbin. Today we are going to the main site of the festival-Zhaolin Park, where you will be able to learn about the art of ice and snow sculptures and its related about 20 minutes to get there by bus, and I am going to give you some information on the way. Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang Province. It is a political, economic and cultural center in Northeast China as well as a renowned destination for ice and snow tours. When the winter comes, Harbin, clad in white, is very beautiful. Thousands upon thousand of tourists from home and abroad come here to see the ice and snow sculptures, and attend the festival activities, exhibitions and trade fairs, all make Harbin in the deep winter full of a festival atmosphere. Harbin is located at 45 degrees 45 minutes’ north latitude and a 126 degrees 38 minutes’ east longitude in the southwestern part of Herlongjiang Province. The city proper covers an area of 154 square kilometers with an average altitude of 116 meters. Harbin is in a sub-frigid zone with a dry climate. Owing to the cold currents from Siberia and the subtropical marine air masses, Harbin’ s winter is long and cold. The average temperature in January is 19.4 degrees Centigrade below zero and the freezing period is about 190 days a year. Generally speaking, the first snowfall takes place in November. Picturesque snowfalls become endless resources for photographers and artists. There are also many forms of ice, such as ice-flakes and icicles on trees. The ice in the Songhua River is the vest material for ice-sculptures, because it is hard and crystal clear. Therefore, we can claim unique natural resources are the basis for the ice and snow art, and the refined
appreciation of beauty by Harbin people is the foundation of the creation of ice and snow culture. Ladies and gentlemen: The ice and snow art is a unique art form in Chinese artistic culture. It is a recent but excellent creation. It can be divide into two categories: one is ice and snow sculpture made with natural ice and snow by skillful sculptors. The other is the recreation of natural ice and snow sculptures as well as ice and snow sculptures by painting, photographing and filming. As you are here to see ice-sculptures, I wonder whether you know how the ice-sculpture came into being and how it is made. Now let me tell you about it. Ice sculptures derive from ice-lanterns made by fisherman on the Songhua River. When the winter comes, the river freezes, and the ice is about one meter thick. This is a good season for fishing. At daytime, fishermen dug a hole though the ice. As the sunlight and fresh air poured into the hole, fish swarmed to it and were caught by fishermen. At night the fishermen continued fishing on the river. Without modern wind proof lamps, they made ice lanterns. With a candle burning inside an ice-cover, fishermen could easily catch their prey. In fact, it is not difficult to make an ice-lantern. You can get a pail of water and leave it outside until ice is formed to about two centimeters thick. Then you can take it home, drill a hole on top, pour out the waster, warm it for a while, and separate it from the pail. Then you can put a candle inside the ice-cover and the ice-lantern is now made. If you are interested, you can try to make on yourself. I am sure you will better understand the wisdom of the ancient people. The Harbin Ice Sculptures Show started on Feb. 7, 1963, and this is the 22nd show. It is held in Zhaolin Park with an area of 70000 square meters. Zhaolin Park was first built as a park belonging to the Red-Cross Board of Directors at the turn of
the century. The name changed to the Daoli Park in the 1930s. In memory of an Anti-Japanese hero Li Zhaolin, the name was changed into Zhaolin Park. The Harbin Ice-Sculpture Show is held every year, the contents and design change and the artistic values improve year after year. Along with the development of ice-sculpture activities, Harbin people have hosted the Ice and Snow Festivals starting from1985. There are varieties of activities that include ice-sculpture shows, snow-sculpture contests, ice and snow sports, ice and snow film festivals, ice and snow literature forums, science and technology exhibitions and trade fares. Now the provincial government calls on: “Let the ice and snow abridge trade and economy exchanges. “In answer to this, we will try to promote the ice and snow culture internationally so as to enhance cooperation on trade, technology and tourism between the people of Harbin and the people of the world. Ladies and Gentlemen: Here we are at Zhaolin Park. Look at the front. This giant arched gateway was built in the Chinese style with ice blocks cut from the Songhua River. Sculptors use saws, chisels and other tools to carve and build. Then they decorate the sculptures with colorful lights. The park is designed into several scenic areas, such as “Golden Rooster Crows”, “Great Achievements”, “Chinese Patriots”, “Ice and Snow Playground”, “Famous Pagodas” and so on. There are about 2000 sculptures on show this year. They vary in style and size. Many are unique and full of aristic conception. If you have some time left after you have walked all around, you can also try a slide down from a high slide made of ice in the shape of a pagoda. If you can participate in these activities, I am sure, you will enjoy your visit even more in this world of ice.
