Whether should SDU students be required to learn Chinese literature? Vera 201000071098 Scientific and Technological English
Our president Mr. Xu suggested the other day that Shandong University students of all disciplines be required to learn Chinese literature. This instantly aroused various opinions. Two main views are included. One is against it, while the other supports it.
As a student of English major, I am strongly in favor of the latter.
First, it meets the need of enhancing students’ cultural literacy.
Chinese literature extends thousands of years which riches in classical poetry, prose, fiction and drama. For instance, the Four Great Classical Novels, Dream of the Red Chamber, Water Margin, Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West, are treasures of the Chinese culture. They are remarkable and worthy of good reading.
Chinese culture is part of ourselves. We were born immersed in Chinese culture from the very first beginning. We have been studying in school for more than sixteen years. After spending so many years learning the basic knowledge of Chinese culture, we are expected to carry it on.
Besides, English has successfully outweighed Chinese in college. It has been surveyed and concluded that most college students spend much more time and energy studying English than Chinese. What’s more, many of us misuse Chinese and even spell it incorrectly, while at the same time we tend to be more familiar with the informal language popular on the Internet. Therefore, it exists an actual need of cultivating students’ cultural awareness and increasing the cultural literacy.
Some people are inclined to believe learning Chinese culture is not very conducive to great progress in their own majors. However, in the modern society, the importance of keeping things in perspective is of practical significance to university students especially. Usually it can include a general education curriculum which provides broad exposure to multiple disciplines and learning strategies in addition to in-depth study in at least one academic area. As it is, learning other disciplines and learning Chinese culture for us. Chinese students are not in conflict but complementary.
To conclude, Shandong University students of all disciplines should be required to learn Chinese literature. It is a useful way to connect us with the past of both the country and ourselves. It can also contribute to the enhancement of students’ cultural quality. Furthermore, it promotes us of all disciplines to be open-minded and aware of our place in the social and world. References:

Euthansia should be legalised
The issue of Euthansia (Mercy Killing) is one of the most disputed/debated/controversial topic of our times.(1) Analysing the different aspects of the issue I wish to express my strong disappointment of the practise.(2) No man has the right to terminate the life of another even it is to end his or her suffering.(3)
To begin with, human life is precious.(4) A life once destroyed can never be be bought back.(5) Moreover, even if the person wants to end his or her life helping him in doing so is unethical.(6) For doing so would be aiding suicide, which is a crime in the eyes of religion and law.(7)
On the other hand, supporters of Euthansia feel that death is preferable alternative to suffering, tremendous and endless pain.(8) This is not always true, they do not realise that death puts an end to any hope of a miraculous recovery which is possible even in the most desperate situation.(9)
Therefore, weighing the pros and cons of the issue I strongly feel that Euthansia is a practise that should never be encouraged or excused.(10) Ending a person's life is a privilege that rests with the superior power.
