What is an argumentative essay?

The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner.

Please note: Some confusion may occur between the argumentative essay and the expository essay. These two genres are similar, but the argumentative essay differs from the expository essay in the amount of pre-writing (invention) and research involved. The argumentative essay is commonly assigned as a capstone or final project in first year writing or advanced composition courses and involves lengthy, detailed research. Expository essays involve less research and are shorter in length. Expository essays are often used for in-class writing exercises or tests, such as the GED or GRE.

Are parents the best teachers?

Life has gone through great changes since education comes into people’s life, without which people may not be able to survive in this high-competition society. However, obviously, in most cases the earliest teachers people have are their parents, and parents are generally most concerned about the development of their children. For instance, they know their personality as well as what they want, and most importantly, they are totally free to teacher their children. However, not every family is the same. They may be filled with variety, so it is not completely true to say that parents are the best teachers.

Opponents argue that parents are the best teachers because they know their children most. For instance, if their children study at home, they can get a very good feedback after classes. It is easy to figure out what are the defects that their children have, according to which they can easily and conveniently change and adopt their teaching plan for the children. Nevertheless, some parents are qualified as good teachers, but not all of them are the best ones. When children are in the preliminary school, it is not surprising that parents are perhaps capable of teaching their children almost every subject even better than professional teachers in the school. But the situation will not last long. We live in a world where knowledge is accumulated by multiplying and at the same time becomes more and more specialized. Therefore, to be a professional in a certain field today takes much longer time than has ever been before. No parent is able to be professional in all fields, though they might be experts in one or more fields. Wise parents often release rather than charge their children as early as possible. They are aware of the possibility outside the family.

STRUCTURE OF AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

An argumentative essay presents an opinion or an argument and then supports that opinion with evidence. As in arguing a case in court or in Parliament, the aim of the argumentative essay is to persuade.

When putting forward an opinion or a solution, it is essential to provide reasons. If the reasons are weak or can be proved to be false the argument will not be valid. Therefore the supporting evidence needs to be selected correctly and the reasons sound.

1.1 Opening statement: this is quite general and introduces the subject of the essay (eg: The future of petrol as fuel for private transport is more likely to become obsolete within the next 20 years.)

1.2 Background information: relevant information about the subject in the past and any relevant immediate information about changes in the present should be considered (eg: Petrol has been a reliable fuel for transport and industry for approximately 100 years but within the last ten years it has become abundantly clear that oil will most likely become rare and alternatives which are happening now --- such as electricity or part petrol and part electricity --- will need to be developed to satisfy private and public needs.)
