When I was in middle school, I found out that my Algebra teacher Mrs. McClure had gone to high school with Dad.

―Gertrude McClure!‖ my dad said as he pointed at her picture in my yearbook. ―Same Old Gertie.‖ He told me to tell Mrs. McClure that he said hello. ―When she finds out you’re my kid, it will blow her mind!‖ he said.

When I told Mrs. McClure so, she asked me. ―What’s your dad’s name?‖

―David MUrphy,‖ I answered.

―I don’t believe it!‖ she said.

―What was my Dad like in school?‖ I asked Mrs. McClure. She explained that dad wasn’t really - 4 -

known for having an active interest in his studies. Unlike my dad, I had more than an active interest in my studies. I was in an eighth grade math class even though I was a seventh grader, and I was on both the math team and the academic games team. I won first place in a national championship and I firmly believed that maybe those flavor of achievements would qualify me for 2.9% financing on a mortgage (按揭), a six-figure job or at least, get me some kind of prize for being a good person.

This was the first time that I had noticed that my dad and I didn’t really have a lot in common except that we both liked to read and we had the same group of relatives.

Dad was on the football team and in the drama club. He was in the Air Force and was the kind of guy that made friends everywhere he went. I remember once when I was little, a bunch of British sailors from the HMS Ark Royal coming over to our very small mobile home one day. They played darts (飞镖), barbequed, and talked funny things. I loved it. I figured since my dad had been in the armed forces, he must have known them from then. But later in life, I realized that my dad was in the Air Force stationed in the Philippines during the Vietnam War and these guys were in the British Navy during peacetime docked in South Florida. The odds (可能性) that he knew them were slim. I asked my mom how Dad knew all these guys. My mother told me, ―We took the public tour of the ship and you know your dad.‖

Personal support

C

Throughout the nation’s more than 15,000 school districts, widely differing approaches to teaching science and math have appeared. Though there can be advantages in diversity, a new international analysis suggests that this diversity has instead contributed to lower achievement scores by US children relative to their peers(同龄人)in other developed countries.

Indeed, concludes William H. Schmidt of Michigan State University, who led the new analysis, ―No single well-accepted view of education governs or regulates US educational practice in math or science.‖ He said, ―The reason is because the education system is deeply and fundamentally flawed(有缺陷的).‖

- 6 -

The new analysis, released this week by the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va., is based on data collected from about 50 nations as part of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study.

Not only do approaches to teaching science and math differ among individual US communities, the report finds, but there appears to be little strategic focus(战略重点)within a school district’s curricula, its textbooks, or its teachers’ activities. It’s sharply different from the uniform national programs of most other countries.

On average, US students study more topics within science and math than their international peers do . This creates an educational environment that ―,‖ Schmidt notes.

For instance, eighth graders in the United States cover about 33 topics in math but just 19 in Japan. Among science courses, the international gap is even wider. US curricula for this age group resemble those of a small group of countries including Australia, Thailand, Iceland, and Bulgaria. Schmidt asks whether the United States wants to be grouped with these nations , whose educational systems ―share our pattern of educational visions‖ but which are not economic leaders in the world.

The new report ―couldn’t come at a better time,‖ says Gerald Wheeler, executive director of the National Science Teachers Association in Arlington. ―The new National Science Education Standards provide that strategic focus,‖ including the call ―to do less, but in greater depth.‖

Carrying out the new science and math standards will be a big challenge, he and Schmidt agree, because the decentralized responsibility(权限分散)for education in the United States requires that any reforms be adapted to one community at a time.

In fact, Schmidt argues ,reforms such as such national standards ―face an almost impossible task, because even though they are well accepted, each becomes only one more voice in the educational system.‖

66. According to Paragraph 1,the teaching of science and math in America is_______.

A. focused on developing student’s potential

B. characterized by its diversity

C. losing its brilliance gradually

D. going downward in recent decades

67.The fundamental flaw of American school education is that_______.

A. it lacks a uniform national program

B. it sets a very low academic standard for students

C. it relies heavily on the performance of individual teachers

D. it attaches too much importance to social sciences

68.―A mile wide and an inch deep‖(Paragraph 5)means US educational practice______.

A. puts stress on quality at the expense of quantity

B. offers an environment for excellent education

C. encourages learning both in depth and in range

D. touches the surface of a wide range of topics

69.The new National Science Education Standards are good because they will_______.

A. provide depth to school science education

B. solve most of the problems in school teaching

C. be able to meet the demands of the community

D. quickly improve teaching quality

- 7 -

70.Putting the new science and math standards into practice will be difficult because_____.

A. there is always debate in educational circles

B. not enough teachers have realized the necessity for doing so

C. school districts are responsible for making their own decisions

D. many schoolteachers challenge the authority of these standards

Organic food, once considered something that only health fanatics desired, is now a regular feature at most supermarkets. And that has created a bit of a dilemma. On the one hand, you have a conventionally grown apple. On the other, you have one that’s organic. Both apples are firm, shiny and red. Both provide vitamins and fiber, and both are free of fat, sodium and cholesterol.

Conventionally grown food generally costs less, but is organic food a better choice? The advantages claimed for such foods over conventionally grown and sold food products are now being debated on a large scale. Supporters of organic foods – a term whose meaning varies greatly – are frequently telling the world that such products are safer and more nutritious than others.

The growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritional quality of daily foods is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been aroused by sweeping claims that the conventional food supply is unsafe or inadequate in meeting nutritional needs.

Almost daily, the public is surrounded by claims for ―no-aging‖ diets, new vitamins and other wonder foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated reports that natural vitamins are superior to man-made ones, that fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs, that untreated grains are better than those treated with insect spray and the like.

Although most of these claims are not supported by scientific evidence, large amounts of written material about the benefits of organic foods makes it difficult for people to separate fact from fiction. As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting of organically grown foods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to health have become widely advertised and form the basis for people’s opinion.

One thing that most organically grown food products seem to have in common is that they cost more than conventionally grown foods. But in many cases consumers are misled if they believe organic foods can maintain health and provide better nutritional quality than conventionally grown foods.

[1]Reading is often quite helpful to high school students in crisis(危机). Whatever crisis someone is experiencing, there is probably already a book aboutalone.

[2]Teenagers are in crisis in so many different ways now. They are experiencing stress as parents lose jobs in a financial crisis. They are under pressure to find a way to pay the tuition(学费)when they get accepted to college. Also, they may become hurt by betrayals (背叛) of friends.

[3]Teenagers often feel alone in their problems; they act like they are the only person on the planet who has experienced the problem.

[4] Modern literature is often very helpful for teenagers. It helps teens to read about other people who have had a serious crisis in life and gone on to achieve their dreams and a good life.

[5]Literature thus helps teens move out of their minds and their fears and into the larger world. Reading literature helps teens to realize that everyone has to deal with serious problems along the path of forming an identity, choosing a career, leaving their hometown for college, and every other crisis a teen may face.

[6]For us teachers, it is helpful to tell the students that for whatever problem ___________, someone has probably already has written it in a book. Ask the class to share the problems, and try to find a book that has addressed each one. Literature includes many universal themes. Once students realize that, they may become interested in spending more time in the library finding books they relate to. Once they use literature to gain help during difficult times in life, they will realize that reading is really a wonderful way to learn more about life.

One possible version:

What is honesty? Honesty means speaking the truth and being fair and upright in act. Considered a virtue, honesty is admired in every country and every culture.

- 11 -

However, there are still some dishonest people living in this world. Some people try to take advantage of other people whenever they can. Some businessmen are not always honest in their dealings. Some students are caught cheating over exams and punished to leave school. Some newspapers carry some untrue news just in order to attract more readers.

Actually, being dishonest is generally looked upon as an evil, and is despised and condemned by society. But being an honest person, we can benefit a lot. First, we can have a peaceful life, for we will not have the burden of remembering every lie we have told. Second, being an honest person, we can be trusted by other people and have more friends, which will do good to our lives.

I do believe honesty is a virtue which is the only key to open the door to success in our careers and lives.
