If I were to ask you to close your eyes and I gave you a piece of apple to eat, would you be able to tell me what it is just by tasting it? Of course, you could. Your tongue helps you know what different foods taste like. Do you know that foods would taste different if you did not have a nose?

These experiments show how important your nose is when you taste things. Experiment 1

Have your friend close her eyes and open her mouth. Give her a piece of the food and ask her to taste it. Then, ask her what she thinks it is. She will probably guess correctly.

Experiment 2

While your friend has her eyes closed, give her a piece of potato. At the same time, hold a piece of apple right under her nose. Ask her to eat the potato and tell you what she thinks it is. She will say it is a piece of apple! You can even do it the other way around, and she will think she is eating a potato, or, perhaps, she won’t be able to name what she is eating.

Experiment 3(for the brave)

Take a piece of raw onion. You don’t have to close your eyes this time. Press your nose closed with your other hand so that no smells can get into your nose. Now eat a small piece of the onion. Surprise! As long as you hold your nose, you will not be able to taste the onion.

What You Find

Your nose and your tongue work together to make food taste the way it does. Your tongue, however, can taste only certain flavors like salty, bitter, sour, and sweet. All of the other “tastes” are actually “smells”, and you need your nose to “taste” them.

Oh, you might use this science secret the next time you are told to eat something you don’t like the taste of. If you hold your nose while you eat, you won’t “taste” it at all.

50. How many experiments are mentioned in the passage?

A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four

51. Why is Experiment 3 for the brave?

A. Because you have to eat a raw onion.

B. Because you have to press your nose.

C. Because you do the experiment alone.

D. Because you must keep your eyes open.

52. The passage mainly tells us ____________.

A. why different foods can smell the same

B. why some things smell better than others

C. how smell changes the way we see things

D. how smell influences the way food tastes

C

Words play magic. They can create pictures in our minds; they can help us express our feelings that we’ve been trying to hide, and like a key, words can open up locked hearts and free our souls that have been kept deep inside.

When different people are reading the same passage, for example, about a scene which shows a palace at midnight, the words they read are the same, yet if they are asked to paint out what the scene is like in their minds, each person will have the pictures drawn differently.

Although human minds are different, I do believe that somehow we have all come across mutualfeelings. Stories that touch us, stories that terrify us, stories that set us free – we all have tasted the pain, the fear, and the freedom because we all have feelings. I believe all of us have personalities within personalities, and by that I mean people who seem to be strong are not always that strong, they are easily hurt on the inside.

Good writers, who can smartly use the right words in their writings, will easily break through the shell of one’s personality within. Great writers, who can use only the perfect words to move the personality within, will understand one’s weakness or one’s heart – even rewrite his or her life.

I want to be an excellent writer because when I read, I feel like home. Home is where my books are. When I feel scared, I read, and it becomes my candle. When I feel sad, I read, and it becomes my ceiling. When I feel lonely, I read, and it becomes my company.

Home is where we leave the sadness, fear and stress behind, where we only allow happiness to stay. I want to be a writer who brings such feelings to everyone to bring them home with my words.

Reading is all that I need. Whenever I read, I just feel the magic that words created, leaving everything behind.

53. What does the underlined word “mutual” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. different B. strange C. special D. shared

54. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Many words can help hide your feeling deep inside.

B. Some writers can free your personalities from locked hearts.

C. Most people will draw the same picture for the same passage.

D. No places will keep the sadness, fear and stress away from people.

55. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A. Wonderful Words B. Excellent Writers

C. Touching Stories D. Creative Minds

Supermarkets are trying out new computers that make shopping carts more

intelligent. They will help shoppers find paper cups or toilet soap, and keep a record of the bill.

The touch-screen devices(装置) are on show at the Food Marketing Institute’s exhibition here this week. “These devices are able to create value and get you around the store quicker,” said Michael Alexander, manager of Springboard Retail Networks Inc., which makes a smart cart computer called the Concierge.

Canadian stores will test the Concierge in July. A similar device, IBM’s “Shopping Buddy”, has recently been test-marketed at Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts.

Neither device tells you how many fat grams or calories are in your cart, but they will flash you with items on sale. The idea is to make it easier for people to buy, not to have second thoughts that maybe you should put something back on the shelf.

“The whole model is driven by advertisers’ need to get in front of shoppers,” said Alexander. “They’re not watching 30-second TV ads anymore.”

People can use a home computer to make their shopping lists. Once at the store, a shopper can use a preferred customer card to start a system that will organize the trip around the store. If you’re looking for toothpicks, you type in the word or pick it from a list, and a map will appear on the screen showing where you are and where you can find them.

The device also keeps a record of what you buy. When you’re finished, the device figures out your bill. Then you go to the checker or place your card into a self-checkout stand and pay.

The new computerized shopping assistants don’t come cheap. The Buddy devices will cost the average store about $160,000, and the Concierge will cost stores about

$500 for each device.

56. The underlined word “they” in paragraph 1 refers to __________.

A. supermarkets B. shopping carts

C. shop assistants D. shop managers

57. Which of the following is the correct order of shopping with computerized shopping carts?

a. Start the system.

b. Make a shopping list.

c. Find the things you want.

d. Go to a self-checkout stand.

A. abdc B. acbd

C. bacd D. bcad

58. We can learn from the last paragraph that ____________.

A. intelligent shopping carts cost a large sum of money

B. the Concierge is cheaper than the Buddy devices

C. shop assistants with computer knowledge are well paid

D. average stores prefer the Concierge to the Buddy devices

59. What might be the most suitable title for the text?

A. Touch-screen Devices Make Shopping Enjoyable

B. New Computers Make Shopping Carts Smarter

C. Concierge and Shopping Buddy

D. New Age for Supermarkets

Be Careful about Energy Drinks

Be careful with what you drink: something that looks cool may not be good for your health.

The weather is getting hotter and you’ll be getting thirstier playing basketball or riding home from school. ___60___But be careful what you pour down your throat; something that looks cool may not be good for your health.

There are plenty of so-called energy drinks on the market. ___61___But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks have high levels of caffeine (咖啡因). These drinks are specially aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much.

___62___Because of this, the International Olympic Committee has limited their use. The amount of caffeine in most energy drinks is at least as high as in a strong cup of coffee or strong tea.

Research by Australian scientists has found that many teenagers are affected by caffeine. The results of their study show that 27 percent of boys aged 8-12 take in more caffeine than their parents. ___63___Just one can of energy drink can make you nervous, have difficulty sleeping and can even cause heart attacks. “Teenagers should not be encouraged to have drinks with high level caffeine in them,” a

初三英语期中考试

Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. It often happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits died hard, and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.

Many roads and places in Singapore are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by young people today. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Palace. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries – in both the West and the East.

Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to develop friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were first from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in old British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus – clearly named by some homesick Royal Air Force soldiers.

Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example. “Base Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay. Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.

A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road” for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”. This road is called a crescent (月牙形的) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.

64. Do societies name places in similar ways or quite different ways? _________________________________________________________________
