Mobile Phones at School

Dear Editor,

I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we've had about whether it is necessary for middle school students to carry mobile phones to school.

The majority of the students think that it is more convenient for them to keep in touch with their parents and classmates if they have a mobile phone. And what's more, it's the latest fashion.

However, most teachers think middle school students are not old enough to control themselves. It is a waste of time for students to play games and send messages to each other by mobile phone. And it's easy to cause the students to vie with each other. If necessary, they can make phone calls by using public phones on the campus.

In my opinion, following the fashion is understandable. But as middle school students, we should put all our heart into our studies.

Yours truly,

Li Hua

(Text 1)

W: Hurry up. The conference starts at nine o’clock.

M: Don’t worry. We still have twenty minutes left.

(Text 2)

W: What did you think of the meal?

M: It was delicious on the whole, but the beef was a little salty, and the soup was too hot. (Text 3)

M: Lucy, you’ve been sitting in front of the computer for hours.

W: Well, it’s raining. I can do nothing but surf the Internet in such weather.

M: That’s just an excuse. The sun has been out for an hour.

(Text 4)

W: Oh, I am going crazy. When will I ever finish all this work?

M: Then why not take a break? You’ve never been so tired before.

W: I can’t. The paper is due tomorrow.

M: Be careful — burning the candle at both ends isn’t such a good idea.

(Text 5)

M: It’s still raining. I’m afraid the match will have to be put off.

W: But the weather report says it will be fine by noon.

M: I hope so. But don’t you think the field will be too wet?

W: Don’t worry. In this season, the field will dry out very quickly.

(Text 6)

W: I can’t decide whether to go to university or just get a job. What do you think?

M: Well, if I were you, I’d go on studying.

W: But I don’t even know what to study.

M: If I had the chance, I’d study computers. You know you’re good at science.

W: That’s what my parents want me to do. But, you know, I still have to ask my parents for pocket money. I hate that I’m this old and I’m still depending on them for money.

M: Well, if you find a part-time job, you can make some money but still go to university. W: You’re right. Thank you for the advice.

(Text 7)

W: What are you reading, Andy?

M: I’m reading an article about the Great Wall. It says the Great Wall has been facing a serious threat recently.

W: Really?

M: Yes. It says some parts of it have fallen down because of severe wind and sandstorms. W: I once heard that some parts of the Great Wall have been destroyed by people. Is that true? M: Yes, I’m afraid so. Some people even stole the stones to sell.

W: I think people who harm the Great Wall should be punished.

M: I agree. After all, the Great Wall is a treasure not only for China but also for the world.

W: You’re right. We are all responsible to protect the Great Wall — it is one of the greatest cultural sites in the world.

(Text 8)

W: Everyone seems to be on a diet. Have you noticed that?

M: At least everyone is talking about it. A neighbor of mine is on a banana diet. She eats one banana for breakfast, one for lunch, and two for dinner.

W: That would be bad for her teeth and her health. Has she lost any weight?

M: She doesn’t look any thinner. My sister eats eggs to lose weight, only eggs for breakfast, for lunch, and for dinner.

W: That’s bad for her heart! Something in eggs is good for losing weight, but too many eggs are bad for the heart.

M: I’ve read that too. Then what about a fish diet? One of my cousins eats nothing but fish, even for breakfast!

W: That’s too expensive. The best way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. That’s why I’m on my way to the tennis court.

(Text 9)

W: How long have you been in America, David?

M: I came here on March 15. So I’ve been here for five months.

W: Are you getting used to life in this city?

M: Yes, everything is OK. But I don’t like the weather at this time of the year. It’s too hot and wet. W: Don’t worry. It will become cool quite soon. So how much longer will you stay here?

M: I’ll be here till the end of the year. Then I’ll go back to my hometown for the Spring Festival. W: China’s Spring Festival sounds very interesting. But I have never had a chance to experience it. M: Why don’t you travel to Beijing and stay with my family during the Chinese New Year?

W: That’s a great idea. Thanks! Oh, would you like some Chinese tea? It’s a gift from one of my Chinese students. She’s been teaching me how to cook Chinese food, and I can cook a few dishes now.

(Text 10)

Mr. and Mrs. Smith got married in 2000. They really wanted a child. However, they didn’t have a son until seven years later. They loved their son very much and were very happy together. When the son was four years old, they sent him to a kindergarten. Mr. Smith would usually go and pick him up after work. However, one afternoon Mr. Smith was very tired after work. He thought it was dangerous for him to drive. So he asked his wife to pick their son up while he rested in bed. Mrs. Smith was busy with cleaning. She said she would go after she finished cleaning the house. But when she finished her work she forgot about picking up her son. When she finally remembered, she went to look for her son, but she couldn’t find him. She told her husband the bad news; sure that he would blame her. The father was very angry at first, but then he calmed down. He said to his wife, “It wasn’t your fault. If I had picked him up, our son wouldn’t have been lost.” Luckily, they later found their son, and the family became closer than before.

C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrases that best fits the context. I have been told in China, having a pet, particularly a dog, is often considered to be a status symbol because it shows the family can 36 to have an animal. It is different here. In Canada it is 37 for people to have pets. Many people have dogs. Many others have cats and there are people who keep fish, birds or rabbits. Some keep what we call exotic (外来的) pets. These might be ferrets, snakes or almost any other animal you can think of, although keeping 38 pets is often difficult and because it can also be hard on the animal. The keeping of some exotic animals is not allowed by law. Now, my wife and I live in a small town. We no longer have a 39 --- we live in an apartment. We have a cat named Callie and she never goes out 40 onto the balcony so cars are no longer an issue. She’s about sixteen years old and will probably live to be twenty or more. The 41 will come when she dies and we no longer have a pet. We have had a pet for so long that it seems like a natural part of our lives and without a cat around the house it will seem somehow 42 . On the other hand, we are getting older and given that a cat can live about twenty years we wonder if we will ever have another after Callie goes. Cats are cutest, of course, when they are small kittens but a kitten is 43 for a longer time than we may have left. I think having a pet is very good for a number of reasons. It helps to teach children how to look after a __44__creature, makes them realize that animals have feelings just like we do and that, in many ways, we depend on each other. For older people like me an animal is a 45 and a comfort to have around, a pet, properly treated, returns the favor by 46 unconditional love. Wouldn’t this world be a 47 place if people could learn how to do that.

36. A. buy B. afford C. supply D. provide

47. A. bad 44. A. lively B. alive C. live D. living B. competitor C. companion 46. A. giving out B. giving in

If we let it control us, we may fall into the abyss (深渊) of serious psychological problems. 55. ______ if we harness (利用) it and take it as our inspiration, we may finally enjoy the glory of success

PART THREE: READING COMPREHENSION (30 points) Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.

All 3 – D glasses have the same purpose: to bring different images to each eye. 3 – D content has two sets of images, one for each eye, that are slightly offset (偏移). When the separate images hit each eye, the brain senses them together as a three – dimensional image. Al though anaglyphs can create a good sense of distance, they damage the quality of the sensed color. That’s why the anaglyp h 3 – D content has been declining in recent years. The next type of passive 3 – D involves polarized (偏振) glasses, which work similarly to anaglyphs. C. giving back D. giving off B. great C. messy D. poor

Instead of using colored lenses, the lenses are polarized, meaning they only let certain light through. By displaying one image that is polarized ―up and down‖, another image that is polarized ―left and right‖ and having each lens only let one of the two types of light through, these glasses can achieve a 3 – D effect. This can be very effective and does not have the color problems associa ted with anaglyphs. For this reason, polarized 3 – D glasses are the technology of chose for most 3 – D content in movie theaters.

The most recent type of 3 – D glasses, called shutter glasses. Instead of having two slightly different images displayed at the same time and filtering one to eac h eye, shutter glasses make each lens go dark and then transparent again at the same time with the images displayed on the screen. When the screen displays the image for the left eye, the right lens will go dark so that only the left eye can see it. Then, when the image for the right eye is displayed, the opposite happens. This is why shu tter glasses are called an ―active‖ 3 – D technology.

56. The role of 3 – D glasses is to .

A. ensure the separate images hit each eye B. form a 3 – D image in each eye

C. prevent images from being separated D. provide each eye with the same image

57. According to the passage, anaglyph glasses .

A. provide good color quality B. make images have unnatural colors

C. block multi – colored images D. result in a poor sense of distance

58. Why are polarized glasses popular in movie theatres?

A. They rely on light waves to send images. B. They make full use of the colored lenses.

C. They offer high quali ty colors. D. They can show two different images at the same time.

59. According to the passage, shutter glasses

A. give people a comfortable view of the film

B. make people feel themselves part of the film D. blank people’s view one at a time

. C. make people watch the image with only one eye 60. The purpose of the passage is to

A. introduce three kinds of 3 – D glasses

B B. advertise 3 – D shutter glasses D. explain how 3 – D images are formed C. give advice on how to choose 3 – D glasses .

―Our aim is to take our art to the world and make people underst and what it is to move,‖ said David Be lie, the founder of parkour(跑酷). Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring. But what if making your morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from Walls and over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the James Bond in the movie Casino Royaler Bond jumps down from a roof to a windowsill and then runs several blocks over obstacles on the way. It is just because of Bond's wonderful performances that the sport has become popular worldwide. Yes, that's parkour, an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to another as quickly as possible, getting over all the obstacles in the path using only the abilities of the human body. Parkour is considered an extreme sport. As its participants dash ar ound a city, they may jump over fences, run up walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop. Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see parkour much more than that.

Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy (理念) behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination, go straight, jump over all the barriers as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life, to reach the destination successfully. A parkour lover said, "I love parkour because its philosophy has become my life, my way to do everything.‖ Another philosophy we've learnt from parkour is freedom. It can be done by anyone, at anytime, anywhere in the world. It is a kind of expression of trust in yourself that you earn energy and confidence.

From a very early age, some children exhibit better self-control than others .Now, a new study that began with about 1,000 children in New Zealand has tracked how a child’s low self-control can predict poor health, money troubles and even a criminal record in t heir adult years. The study led by Moffitt of Duke University and colleagues followed 1,000 children from birth to age 32 in Dunedin, New Zealand.

―The children who had the lowest self-control when they were age three to ten, later on had the most health problems in their 30s,‖ Moffitt said, ―and they had the worst financial situation. They were more likely to have a criminal record and to be raising a child as a single parent on a very low income.‖ Moffitt explained that self-control problems were widely observed, and weren’t just a feature of a small group of misbehaving kids.

Moffitt said it’s still unclear why some children have better self-control than others, though she said other researchers have found that it’s mostly a learned behavior, with relatively little genetic influence. But good self-control can be set to run in families because children with good self-control are more likely to grow up to be healthy and prosperous parents. But the good news, Moffitt said, is that self-control can be taught by parents, and through school curricula that have been shown to be effective. 66. From the first two paragraphs we learn that

B. scientists know well why some children have better self-control

C. self-control in childhood has nothing to do with criminal activity

D. willpower as a child really influences people’s chances of adulthood

A. Self-control cannot be taught in schools.

B. The study is restricted within few participants.

C. Good parenting can improve self-control and life success.

D. It’s never too late to deal with self-control problems.

70. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A. How to teach the kids a bit of self-control in schools

B. Kids are encouraged to take risks at an early age

PART FOUR: WRITING (45 points)

Section A (10 points) Direction: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information for the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Compared to checks, a credit card allows small short – term loans to be quickly made to a customer who need not calculate a balance remaining b efore every transaction. Additionally there is no need for a customer to carry any cash for most purposes. Credit cards also offer consumers an easy way to track expenses. Credit cards are very convenien t to use. But people who use credit cards irresponsibly can soon find themselves heavily in debt. Cardholders borrow money from a bank each time they charge something. They avoid interest charges if they pay their bill in full each month. But if they only make the minimum payment, it may take years to pay off a debt. Interest is continually ch arged on the unpaid balance. And that is not they only danger. Information security is a major issue these days. Recently there have been several incidents in which many people had financial information either lost or stolen. The cardholder suffered great losses. Now, major banks in China get more cautions in issuing caused by the card overdrafts(透支). Measures can be taken to avoid the problems. A lost or stolen card can be canceled in time, which will greatly limit the fraud. European banks require a cardholder’s security code he entered for purchases with the card. In July, 2009, The China Banking Regulatory Commission forbade the issuing of credit cards to under 18 – year – old age group.

Section B (10 points) Directions: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answer on your answer sheet. From now on, never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow. The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created: the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success only if you make the right choice. You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem. Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the perennial (长期的) victims and martyrs. Th ey are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.

If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks. In short, in all areas of your life, whether they be financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are respons ible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.
