A

Years ago a John Hopkin's professor gave a group of graduate students this task: Go to the slums (贫民窟). Take 200 boys, between the ages of 12 and 16, and research into their background and environment. Then predict their chances for the future.

The students, after consulting social statistics, talking to the boys, and compiling (汇编) much data, concluded that 90 percent of the boys would spend some time in prison.

Twenty-five years later another group of graduate students was given the job of testing the prediction. They went back to the same area. Some of the boys—by then men—were still there, a few had died, some had moved away, but they got in touch with 180 of the original 200. They found that only four of the group had ever been sent to prison.

Why was it that these men, who had lived in a breeding(滋生)place of crime, had such a surprisingly good record? The researchers were continually told: “Well, there was a teacher...”

They pressed further, and found that in 75 percent of the cases it was the same woman. The researchers went to this teacher, now living in a home for retired teachers. How had she exerted (发挥) this remarkable influence over that group of children? Could she give them any reason why these boys should have remembered her?

“No,” she said, “no I really couldn't.” And then, thinking back over the years, she said amusingly, more to herself than to her questioners: “I loved those boys.”

41.What were a group of graduate students instructed to do?

A. To research into the living conditions of the poor citizens.

B. To foretell what the future might have in store for poor kids.

43.Most of the 200 surveyed boys grew into good citizens because________.

A. their parents were strict with them

B. they had great ambition as children

C. they were expected to do good deeds

44.What conclusion can we draw from the story?

A. Love can work miracles.

B. Like teacher, like pupil.

C. Adversity leads to prosperity.

D. Nothing is difficult to the man who will try.

Beldon and Canfield are two seashore towns, not far apart. Both towns have many hotels, and in summer the hotels are full of holiday-makers and other tourists.

Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel in Beldon. The next day, this news appeared on page two of the town's newspaper—The Beldon Post:

FIRE AT SEABREEZE

Late last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom. The hotel manager said that a cigarette started the fire. We say again to all our visitors: “Please don't smoke cigarettes in bed.”This was Beldon's first hotel fire for five years.

The Canfield Times gave the news in these words on page one:

ANOTHER BELDON HOTEL CATCHES FIRE

Last night Beldon firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, bedclothes and some furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel. An angry holiday-maker said,“An electric lamp probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I put my bedside light on, I heard a funny noise from the lamp.”We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield.

What are the facts, then? It is never easy to find out the exact truth about an accident.

There was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel last August; that is one fact. Do we know anything else? Yes, we know that firemen went to the hotel.

A.b and c B.a and d C.c and e D.a and c

47.The Canfield Times used the headline like this in order to make its readers think________.

A.hotels in Beldon often catch fire

B.hotels in Beldon don't often catch fire

C.this was the second fire at the Seabreeze Hotel

D.Beldon was a good place except that hotels there are not quite safe

A.the bedroom lamps were very old at the Seabreeze Hotel

Two more cases of H7N9 bird flu virus have been detected in Zhejiang province, including a man who died last week, authorities said on Wednesday.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that a 38-year-old patient surnamed Hong from Hangzhou, the provincial capital, who died in hospital on March 27, had the virus.

Hong was infected on March 7 while working in neighboring Jiangsu province. He returned home on March 18, according to the Zhejiang health department.

The other patient, surnamed Yang, is a 67-year-old man. He developed a cough and fever on March 25 and was admitted to hospital on Tuesday.

None of the people who came into close contact with the patients have developed symptoms of the flu, the health department said.

On Sunday, two men in Shanghai died from H7N9. A woman in Anhui province and four men in Jiangsu province remain in critical condition, which makes a large number of people scared to death.

All patients had fevers and coughs in the early stages before developing

pneumonia(肺炎) and breathing difficulties, China's health authorities said.

Experts say genetic analysis shows that the H7N9 virus can be treated with Tamiflu, an antiviral drug that may slow the spread of influenza(流感,家畜流行性感冒) in the body.

Wang Xianjun, head of the Shandong provincial center of disease control, said H7N9 is sensitive to neuraminidase-inhibiting medicine such as Tamiflu, Qilu Evening News reported on Wednesday.

There are no effective vaccines(疫苗) for H7N9 as yet, Wang said, but using Tamiflu may be effective in the early stages.

49. According to this passage, the most cases of H7N9 bird flu virus have been detected in ______.

A. Zhejiang province B. Anhui province

C. Shanghai D. Jiangsu province

50. From the whole passage we can learn that_______.

A. two men in Shanghai and a woman in Zhejiang province died from H7N9.

B. the H7N9 virus can be cured with an antiviral drug called Tamiflu.

C. all the patients infected with H7N9 had fevers and coughs in the early stages.

D. only one patient has died from H7N9 in Anhui.

51. The underlined word in the sentence “…four men in Jiangsu province remain in critical condition” may be close to ______ in meaning.

A. very serious and dangerous B. extremely important

C. quite healthy D. not serious or dangerous

52. The passage is mainly about _____.

A. the medicine for H7N9

B. the spread of H7N9 and an antiviral drug

C. the number of patients who died from H7N9

Tips on taking exams

The following are a few study tips for high school students and college students, which will help you answer your exam papers with confidence.

53. __________

It is better to have all the study materials available to you before you start reading. This not only includes your texts and notes but also the previous years’ notes and things like a dictionary and reference books. This has two advantages. Firstly, you do not need to break your concentration (专心) by searching for books. It saves time. Secondly, it gives you a feeling of being prepared for the exams, as you have all the

necessary things and the only thing left its to start studying .

54. __________

The most common mistake that students make is that they start studying a day or two before exams. You can’t revise (复习) all the notes if you study only two days before exams. Therefore, what most of the students do is study only the “so-called” important points. As a result , even if the test paper is easy , you get a low score only because you don’t know the entire syllabus (课程提纲). So start studying at least a month before the exams.

55. __________

If you have descriptive subjects, do not just remember the answers. Try to understand what you are reading, for this is the best methods for good recall at the time of exams. The major disadvantage of reciting is that if you forget one word of the answer during your exam, you tend to go completely blank. On the contrary (相反地), if you understand the subjects well, you can write the answer on your own at any time. For exams like math , practice at least five sums every day. Math cannot be learned in a day .

56. __________

The last tips is to study when you are in your best mentally active state. Some people are comfortable studying in the early morning, while some like studying at night. Find out the time when you are fresh and relaxed and choose that time for your studies.
