The American composer and conductor Marvin Hamlisch, who composed the music for great films and Broadway musicals, has died.

Hamlisch's music touched lives around the world and won him three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony, and three Golden Globe Awards. He won multiple awards for his score of the ground-breaking show A Chorus Line. That musical also won a Pulitzer Prize. He worked with a number of American stars, including Barbra Streisand and Aretha Franklin. He composed more than 40 motion picture scores, including the Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s ragtime music for The Sting, which provided his third Oscar.

One of his last performances was on July 13, at the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts center outside Washington. Hamlisch performed with Broadway singer Melissa Errico, in an evening of George Gershwin tunes. Errico said she cherished the experience.

“It was the greatest artistic experiences of my life, not to mention the amount of laughter we got out of the audience, but to be super silly doing a serious job with

music. That’s Marvin. He likes to have a good time and do incredible music,” she said. Hamlisch was the principal pop conductor for several U.S. orchestras,

including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony and Pops and The San Diego Symphony. He's considered one of the most modern composers, with works from Broadway hits to classical compositions and rhythm and blues hits. “He is someone who knows how to take classical music, historical music, theater music, jazz music,” said Errico. " He believes that a pop concert should feel, not serious, not feel like you’re going back in time, but that it happens right now. There is no one in the world like him, I cannot describe this loss.”

Hamlisch, 68, died on Monday, his family said on Tuesday.

He was a graduate of the Julliard School of Music and Queens College. He often spoke of music's universal appeal. On his website, he wrote, “There is a global nature to music, which has the potential to bring all people together."

Everybody likes a winner, and there are always people ready to cheer for a good

loser. But who ever heard a song for the man who comes in second? So this is in

praise of the almost winner, the nearly champion, the next to the biggest, the second

best. This is the song of Mister Two. You hear unflattering names for Mister Two. “Also run”, they call him, and “runner

up”. Names that make you think of a fellow who couldn’t quite make it. Don’t let that

fool you.

Ask the winner of any race how good a man Mister Two is. He will tell you it’s

Mister Two who made him run so fast, Mister Two pressing hard at his heels

threatening always to overtake and pass him.

Ask the salesman who won the contest and what kept him plugging after hours,

looking for extra order. Ask the directors of the big company why they keep

changing their product, seeking the new equipment, the added advantage. What

drives them? What keeps them hopping? It’s the salesman with nearly as many

orders. It is the company with the product almost as good. It’s Mister Two.

In this country, we’re proud of the quality of our champions. Our big men

come very big. Our fast men run very fast. Our wise men are the wisest and our

greatest men are the greatest that a country could hope to be blessed with. And why

is that? Couldn’t it be because great Mister Two’s growing naturally in a land where

the race is always open and everybody can run?

So this is for you, Mister Two. This is your song. This is for all the days you

tried for first, and came in second. It’s for the nights when you wonder if you ought

to go on trying, since nobody seems to notice…

We notice, Mister Two. We know the score. Winner or not, you’re a natural

champion. There couldn’t be a race without you, Mister Two.

60. People call Mister Two unflattering names to _____ him.

A. winning isn’t everything

B. without strong competition he wouldn’t have won

C. without strong competition he wouldn’t have worked so hard

D. there is a prize for being Mister Two

C

Exploit your parking space

An unused parking space or garage can make money. If you live near a city center

or an airport, you could make anything up to £200 or £300 a week. Put an advertisement for free on Letpark or Atmyhousepark.

Rent a room

Spare room? Not only will a lodger(房客) earn you an income, but also , thanks to the government-backed “rent a room” program, you won’t have to pay any tax on the first £ 4500 you make per year. Try advertising your room on Roomspare or Roommateeasy.

Make money during special events

Don’t want a full-time lodger? Then rent on a short-term basis. If you live in the capital, renting a room out during the Olympics or other big events could bring in money. Grashpadder can advertise your space.

Live on set

Renting your home out as a “film set” could earn you hundreds of pounds a day, depending on the film production company and how long your home is needed. A quick search on the Internet will bring up dozens of online companies that allow you to register your home for free---but you will be charged if your home gets picked. Use your roof

You need the right kind of roof, but some energy companies pay the cost of fixing solar equipment (around £14,000) and let you use the energy produced for nothing . In return, they get paid for unused energy fed back into the National Grid. However, you have to sign a 25-year agreement with the supplier, which could prevent you from changing the roof.

64. If you earn £5000 from renting a room in one year, the tax you need to pay will

be based on ____.

A. £300 B. £4500 C. £500 D. £5000

65. Where can you put an advertisement to rent out a room during a big event?

A. On Letpark. B. On Roomspare.

C. On Roommateeasy. D. On Grashpadder.

66. If you want to use energy free, you have to ____.

A. sigh an agreement with the government

B. pay around £14,000 for the equipment

C. keep the roof unchanged within 25years

D. sell the roof to some energy companies

67. For whom is the text most probably written?

A. Lodgers. B. Online companies. C. Advertisers. D. House owners. D

By 2020, there will be about 38 million to 40 million too few college and university graduates to satisfy the demands of the global labor market, a report issued this month has found.

At the same time there will be a surplus of up to 95 million low-skilled workers globally, according to the study, conducted by the McKinsey Global Institute.

The report bases its estimates on the estimation of a global work force of 3.5 billion by the year 2020, compared with 2.9 billion today.

“Unemployment for less skilled workers is currently running two to three times

that of those skilled workers with university or post-graduate degrees” said Richard Dobbs, one of the authors of the report.

China will have to increase its educated work force in order to fulfill its need for 23 million high-skilled workers by 2020, the report said.

Despite the old stereotype (陈规旧习) about arts majors, Americans and Canadians with arts degrees are by and large employed and happy with their work, according to a new report released last week by the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project at Indiana University.

The report, titled “A Diverse Palette”, considered degrees in performance, design, architecture, creative writing, music composition, choreography, film, illustration and fine art. It found that 87% of arts alumni who are working are content with their jobs, whether or not they work as artists, and that 82% of respondents felt they brought creativity to their jobs.

The specific discipline played an important role in employability, the study suggested. For example, 82% of those with a dance degree said they had worked or were working as an artist. That was only true of 30 % with art history degrees. Many arts graduates became involved in education: 57% of arts graduates have taught at some point in their career, and 27% are doing so currently, the report found.

68. In which column of a newspaper can we find the passage ?

A. Art and Literature. B. Science and Technology.

C. Campus and Career. D. Finance and Investment.

69. What can we infer from Paragraph5?

A . China is urged to export more high-skilled workers.

B. University graduates from China may satisfy the demands.

C. Less-skilled workers have now made up the majority of work force in China.

D. By 2020 China will have formed the most advanced educational system.

70. How does the author make the article convincing?

A. By listing examples. B. By presenting statistics.

C. By persuasive quotation. D. By evident comparison.

Mind Your Behavior in Public Places

As is seen from the drawing, when walking with his mother in the street, a boy finds two persons walking on the lawn, totally ignoring the sign “Keep off the lawn!” He says to his mother, “Don’t the uncle and the aunt understand the words on the sign?” Such behavior left me deep in thought .The two persons step on the lawn just for convenience but they lose their civic virtue. It is our duty to obey the principle .And adults should set good examples to children. As we know, kids generally do as adults do. Let’s call on everybody to obey public rules. Only in this way can we build up a harmonious as well as orderly society.
