The Painfulness of Growing Up----On the Character of

Holton Caulfield

Abstract

The Catcher in the Rye is the masterpiece of J.D.Salinger. It has gained the influence and reputation all over the world for a long period. This paper analyses the personality of the protagonist, Holden Caulfield, who is a controversial character among many of the literature characters. The key point is to analyze the inner world and the real world where he lives by using the theory of Freud Sigmund. It focuses on Holton‘s repulsion towards the real world but meanwhile he has no choice but to grow up in it with painfulness and perplexity. According to Freud’s id，ego，superego，this paper shows the reason why Holton wants to escape from this world and to be a catcher in the rye.

内容摘要

《麦田里的守望者》是塞林格的成名之作。该作品很长一段时期在全世界具有很大的影响力和声誉。在所有文学人物中，主人公霍尔顿·科尔菲尔德是个充满争议的人物角色，本文对其进行深度剖析。文章着重运用弗洛伊德西戈蒙的理论来分析人物内心世界和所处的现实世界。关键点在于分析霍尔顿对现实世界的抵触厌恶，但同时他又别无选择的成长于痛苦和彷徨之中。根据弗洛伊德的本我自我超我理论，本篇论文体现了霍尔顿想逃离这个世界和梦想当一个麦田守望者的原因。本文从这一点上具有很深的研究价值。

The death and beauty in The Fall of the House of Usher

Abstract: The Fall of the House of Usher is one of Edgar Allan Poe's famous horror novels, and it embodies Poe's writing theory. It's a kind of abnormal aesthetics which putting beauty into death. Death is written in a forceful hand in Poe's story. Beauty is the flower which comes out of the ghastly terrorist atmosphere and thrilling of death.

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the famous writers of America in 19th century. As George Bernard Shaw said that there are two great writers in America, they are Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain.[1] There are a lot of descriptions about death by sound, colors, emotions and psychology in Poe’s story which brings a forceful senses and heart shock. This kind of shock comes from human’s repelling to death of the subconscious.[2] Death is the ending of life, but in Edgar Allan Poe’s story death is another kind of beauty.

Here we analysis this kind of beauty from the following five field.

1. The specific atmosphere of death.

From the very beginning of the story Poe bring reader a ghastful and depressive atmosphere. For example "During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher." Only in one sentence he used dull, dark, soundless, oppressively, low, alone, singularly, dreary, melancholy 10 negative words to build the atmosphere of death. After finishing this sentence it brings a dull, sad and even a feeling of asphyxia. Getting into this environment one will suddenly remind the beauty of the old days. At this time a flower, a singing bird and even a piece of sunshine can attract you and become the beauty in your heart.

2. The dying out substance.

From the bleak walls, the vacant eye-like windows, a few rank sedges, a few white trunks of decayed trees, the ghastly tree-stems and the falling buildings Poe described a place which is going to die out. Resistance to get into this environment will come out from everyone’s mind. All of these are connected to death and prepared for death.

3. The dead person.

Usher. As the culture she would be put into vault for two weeks before entombment. Although the narrator finally found that Madeline was put into the coffin lively, the describe about her has terribly effected Roderick and the narrator. All the colors like white robes, blood can take them into death.

In most of Poe’s work, the heroine always brings a breath of the death, or herself is the omen of death. They die at first and then come back to life. Put life into death, and this kind of is another kind of beauty.[3]

4. The dying person.

After put his sister into coffin, the only relative in this world had gone away from him forever. The family of Usher will disappear for his death. At this time he can not suffer from the stress of death any more. Infact, his heart had dead already. In order to get away from fear and stress Roderick sang, wrote "The Haunted Palace" and made his friend stayed together with him. He already knew the death wasn’t far away from him. The only thing is that he hadn’t got ready for it.

5. Death reached everything, flower of beauty bloom from death.

As words says “Death, seem a turn of bloom!”[4] When Madeline came out of the coffin and DID stand before his brother the terror came to the end. Roderick frightened to death by his sister and himself, the House of Usher fell into the lake. “The radiance was that of the full, setting, and blood-red moon which now shone vividly through that once barely-discernible fissure.” The blood-red moon shone vividly through the fissure is the signal that the death will soon reach everything and a fire-new beautiful life will come into being.

Poe’s abnormal aesthetic view point is bound up with his unlucky life. Poe lost his parents when he was a child, so he hadn’t got any love from his parents. His adoptive father is a quite serious man and his adoptive mother the only person who loved him also died very early. Parents are always not built in his story and the women always die at the beginning of the story. Suffering many a setback during Poe’s life his love is also a tragedy. His wife died before him which made him built a desire to meet his dead wife in the imaginary world. In the real world Poe was always drunk to escape from the pain of losing love.

All of these misadventures made the beauty-built-after-death as Poe’s writing style. However The Fall of the House of Usher is the most successful one in Poe’s story.
