Good Habits Result From Resisting Temptation

Nowadays, the world is filled with all kind of temptation: fascinating computer games that appeal especially to the young people, round-the-clock TV shows, luxurious designer clothes, etc. These kinds of entertainment and goods have enormously facilitated and enriched our lives, yet they also pose overwhelming distractions for us to develop good habits as “Good habits results from resisting temptation.”

To form good habits, one needs a strong will and perseverance to resist temptation. The process of forming a good habit is also the course of fighting back temptation. The examples are as follows. The good habit of reading requires removing one’s strained eyes from the websites and focusing on one’s book constantly. The good habit of exercising means repeatedly dragging oneself away from cozy couch and soap operas. And keeping a healthy diet demands saying “NO” to junk food. Only when one succeeds in resisting temptation can he gain a good habit.

As Oscar Wilde once mocked, “I can resist everything expect temptation.” It is never easy to resist temptation so as to form good habits. However, good habits, once formed, will pay off in a lifetime.

The Way to Happiness

When it comes to the topic of happiness, everybody has his own interpretation. An inspiring idea goes that happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them, which reveals the nature of happiness. Happiness will be achieved only if we are courageous enough to confront problems and develop the ability to solve them.

There is no denying that we will encounter many problems in our life, but that doesn’t mean we are deprived of happiness. Many great people have set examples for us: Nelson Mandela was sentenced to 27 years in prison, but he kept being optimistic and finally achieved his goal of overthrowing the system of racial segregation. Steve Jobs was abandoned by his biological parents and dropped out of university but still managed to become a legendary entrepreneur. Admittedly, our life will be full of a variety of problems, but we may achieve happiness through striving and developing the ability to deal with them.

Therefore, it is of great necessity to equip ourselves with the ability to cope with problems. To be more specific, we need to be cooperative, persistent and decisive, and have a positive attitude toward problems. Only when we are proficient in dealing with problems can we fully enjoy happiness and live a happy life.

On Information Explosion

As the popular saying goes, “A wealth of information creates a poverty of attention.” Nowadays we are in an era of information explosion.More and more people complain that they are lost in the information age.

Admittedly, the new information age has brought so much convenience that we are allowed to get plenty of information just with a simple click sitting in front of the computers. Nevertheless, we are also confused, annoyed, distracted and upset by an incredibly large quantity of information. For example, when searching for something online, people can be easily misguided by irrelevant information and forget their original plans. Besides, some information often turns out to be useless. Therefore, it may be time-consuming and troublesome to search information online. Then what can we do to avoid being distracted by irrelevant information? Here are some useful tips: firstly, make a list of what you really want before your searching. You can avoid some appealing yet irrelevant information in this way. Secondly, find some credible and professional sources or websites and then save and categorize them. In this way, you can easily leave some advertisements and useless information behind.

How to Live a Meaningful Life?

Among all the highlighted topics, one is “how to live a meaningful life”.

As to this topic, opinions vary. As the saying goes, “The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.” I cannot agree with it more.

If one spend all his life pursuing benefits for himself, he will surely feel fruitless and meaningless when he gets old. From Nelson Mandela’s life, we can get that he never wavered in his devotion to democracy, equality and learning. He has been an inspiration t people in South Africa and throughout the world. For a life which symbolizes the triumph of human spirit, Nelson Mandela was awarded the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. His life, though limited, definitely lasts longer. That’s a life worth living. Therefore, if there is a way to make my life more meaningful, I believe it should be to find something I’m interested in and also is helpful to others or the whole society. Only in this way can I keep my passion throughout my life.

Looking Before Leaping

As the proverb goes, “Look before you leap. “Living in the information age full of changes, we should definitely not jump to conclusions upon seeing or hearing something. Confronted with various kinds of information, modern people tend to trust whatever they have heard or read. However, we should know that information cannot be trusted until it is checked.

It is evident that some information is so misleading that we should not believe it. For instance, several years ago, due to the nuclear pollution in Japan, a host of Chinese, especially middle-aged people, and seniors, rushed to by salt, firmly believing salt could prevent radiation, which was very ridiculous. Also, although it is generally accepted that a picture is worth 1000 words, some pictures cannot be trusted this day and age, for photoshop has prevailed all around the world.

In conclusion, it is imperative for us to form correct attitudes towards the information we see or hear. Instead of drawing conclusions in a hurry, we should raise our awareness of judging right from wrong. I firmly believe a better future is waiting us if we make each and every decision upon deep thinking.

Don’t Judge People by Their Appearance

Although many people acknowledge the old saying that “Never judge people by their appearance”, they still fall into the trap of “good appearance” easily. In my opinion, for a person, abilities are far more important than the appearance.

Firstly, although good appearance can help us make an impression, it is always abilities that really matter. Secondly, people’s good appearance is natural, while abilities have to be gained through self-improvement and years of hard work, which speak more of people’s true selves. Last but not least, good appearance fades while abilities can be improved over time. Eventually, it is abilities that help people succeed, so it is safe to say that abilities will always bring more to life than good appearance.

In conclusion, it is unwise to judge people by their appearance and it is always abilities that count in the long run. As college students, we should spend more efforts developing our abilities.

Technology and Education

What the drawing vividly depicts is that a pupil tells his teacher he needs tech support to solve an extremely easy question on the blackboard. The picture illustrates that students are highly dependent on technology, overlooking the importance of independent thinking. However, as far as I am concerned, technology plays an important but not indispensable role in academic life.

Undoubtedly, advanced technology has brought many conveniences, but we are not supposed to rely on the technology too much. There are two reasons to support this view. To start with, we shoulder the responsibility to learn, and we cannot learn well with technology tools at hand. Furthermore, the future progress of technology depends on us. And only by having a total understanding of basic knowledge, can we promote the development of science and technology in the future.

Of course, the technology, especially the Internet, has made it much easier to get access to information than before. However, over-dependence on technology has done more harm than good. Therefore, we should master basic knowledge on our own and learn how to apply technology to our academic life. Only in this way, can we benefit most from our learning process.

No Shortcut to Learning

The cartoon above is thought-provoking. Young man asks where he can find a book named “How To Do Well In School Without Studying”, and the woman suggests him to find it in the fiction section. Apparently, the cartoon ironically demonstrates a truth that there is no such a thing as a shortcut to learning.

The nature of study require it to be based on a solid foundation.1.Just as we cannot build a castle in the air, neither can we obtain advanced knowledge through a shortcut, for a shortcut can shatter the foundation. For example, students may choose to cheat in order to acquire a high score. However, the cheaters will wind up with ignorance.2.In addition, although many students are averse to learning by rote, there is no denying that it is necessary to spend a certain amount of time to remember and learn the basic knowledge which lay the foundation for further study.

To sum up, students should come to realize that there exits no shortcut in study,. Only hard work will form the bedrock of good performance in school.

Quality of Job Applicants

In the cartoon, an employer express his pity for a young interviewee with a master’s degree. Although the young man has an impressive resume, he fails the interview, for his competitors are Ph.D.s. The picture proves that nowadays interviewer pay more attention to the background. However, I think that the ability of job applicants should be put a higher value on.

There are three main means for that. First and foremost, the education background is only a measure of one’s learning ability, and the care should not be placed before the horse. Besides, in the sole pursuit of high-level education, many companies are likely to miss some talent people, who may drop out of school because of financial difficulties. For example, Steve Jobs, a real innovator, did not finish his college; and Bill Gates, one of the richest men in the world, quit his university, too. An individual’s talents cannot be only measured by education background. Finally, most companies do not specialize in cutting-edge science, so some doctors may be a total waste there.

In conclusion, I believe job applicants should not be evaluated only by their diploma, and their talents and abilities are supposed be considered more by the recruiters.
