Jane Eyre

The Submissive Aspect in Jane EyreJane Eyre is a poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. After we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, Jane Eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think:We remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.In my mind, though a person’s beauty on the face can make others once feel that one is attractive and charming, if his or her mind isn’t the same beautiful as the appearance, such as beauty cannot last for, when others find that the beauty which had charmed them was only a falsity, it’s not true, they will like the person no more. For a long time, only a person’s great virtue, a noble soul, a beautiful heart can be called as AN EVERLASTING BEAUTY, just as Kahill Gibran has said, that ‘Beauty is a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted’. I can feel that how beauty really is, as we are all fleshly men, so we can’t distinguish whether a man is of nobleness or humbleness, but fleshly men, so we can’t distinguish whether a man is of nobleness or humbleness, but as there are great differences in our souls, and from that, we can know that whether a man is noble or ordinary, and even obscure, that is, whether he is beautiful or not.Her story makes us thinking about life and we learn much from her experience, at least, that is a fresh new recognition of the real beauty.Jane Eyre is a touching story of a strong lady, Jane Eyre. She lost her parents when she was still an infant. After spending a painful time at her aunt’s house and a school whose rules were too rigid for a child, she became an tutor at Thornfield and felt in love with her boss—Mr. Rochester. However, she was not able to marry him for he already had a wife, who was a bulky and crazy. The desperate Jane left him and accidentally found her cousins and inherited her uncle’s legacy. She shared the money with her cousins. When she found out her love, Mr. Rochester was blind she decisively went back to him.Every human being can find his reflection in Jane Eyre. She was not pretty, not brilliant, not wealthy and had no family. Similarly we were all born with some defects or other. In other words, we are all bound to face these imperfections of life and we all need the strength to live with them. Sometimes we need some role models to warm our hearts and light our paths. Jane Eyre is one. However gloomy her days were she never lost her dignity nor did she give herself up. So when we lose hope or complain about the imperfections of life we can always get some guidance and reassurance from Jane.I would also like to point out another thing I admire about Jane. Wealth could never affect her peace of mind. She was not overwhelmed by the joy of getting a large amount of money from his uncle. She generous

ly shared it with her cousins. When Rochester was blind and lost his big house Jane immediately came to his help and comforted him. Her love was generous and pure, like the spring sun reviving the desert in Rochester’s heart. Money is just an additional bonus of life. It is a tool, a means but never the main tune of life. Only love can be the reason of life. Only love can heal the broken hearts and carry the desperate ones through the gloomy days.Jane Eyre is part of me and is now residing in my heart. She will give me strength and power when I am depressed.Jane Eyre is a novel written by Charlotte Bronte, an English woman novelist in the 19th century. This story is set in England in the 19th century. It starts with the ill-treatment that the heroine Jane Eyre gets in her aunt’s family and her rebellious actions towards it. The story goes on with her experience in a cruel and inhumane charitable institution “Lowood”, where she suffers coldness and starvation and witnesses death, but luckily gains knowledge. After eight years’ training in Lowood, six as a student and two as a teacher, Jane leaves Lowood and seeks a position as a governess in Thornfield. It is in Thornfield that she meets her future husband, Edward Rochester, but on their wedding day Edward is proved to be a married man. In facing this situation, Jane leaves Edward. But later, when Edward’s wife dies and Edward is disabled, Jane returns to Edward and takes the responsibility to look after him. In the end, they get married and live a happy life.In this novel, Jane Eyre is depicted as a woman rebelling against convention. This can be clearly seen in her relationship with Edward Rochester. When she finds that she has fallen in love with Edward, a man at her father’s age, she bravely expresses her love rather than cowers back, not letting age become the barrier of love. When she receives her master’s love, she refuses those easily-obtained fortune or wealth but insists on being a governess all the same and earning her own living, holding the belief that a woman should be independent in a family. Although in this novel, Charlotte does successfully create such an unconventional woman, the unconventionality is not thorough, because the submissive aspects in Jane’s character can still be seen.First of all, she succumbs to people’s opinions on women’s appearance. She sticks to the belief that beauty is indispensable in forming a perfect lady. Being a plain-looking girl, Jane has a strong inferiority complex about her look, even when she becomes a well-educated lady. When living in her aunt’s family, she attributes her dislike by the family partly to her plain appearance. She mentions that if she was handsome, her aunt would endure her presence more complacently; her cousins would entertain for her more of the cordiality of fellow-feeling; the servants would be less prone to make her the scapegoat of the nursery. When being a governess in Thornfield

and seeing Miss Ingram, she feels incompetence to win Edward’s love against such a beautiful lady at first sight. Then in the party, she carefully observes Miss Ingram and Edward, and in her mind strongly expresses the feeling that they don’t truly love each other and Miss Ingram doesn’t suit Edward in personality. As to this point, it shows Jane’s jealousy about Miss Ingram’s beauty. She seems to declare that if she has beauty, she can no doubt win Edward’s love. And this can be further proved in her later declaration of love to Edward. She says that: if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you.In addition, she gives in to the traditional emphasis on women’s chastity. On the wedding day of Jane and Edward, Jane surprisingly knows that Edward has a living wife. Though she witnesses the insanity of his wife and realizes the hard life that Edward lived with such a mad woman, she refuses to marry him in that situation. Regardless of Edward’s confess and entreaty, Jane leaves him. If Jane was thoroughly unconventional, she could accept Edward’s love and becomes a mistress and then lives a carefree life with her beloved Edward, but she doesn't do this. She can’t accept being a mistress. As a woman, she regards legal marriage status the precondition in the combination of a man and a woman.Last but not least, she bends her knee to God. In this story, God always appears when Jane can’t make her decision, and each time she chooses to follow the God’s direction. When Jane is deep in dilemma whether to stay or leave after the cancellation of the wedding ceremony, it is the God’s voice that ultimately leads her leaving Edward. Later in the moor house, she submits herself to St. John, a devotional God admirer, doing many harsh tasks and trying her best to meet his requirements, though these are not favorable to her. After St. John proposes to Jane several times, Jane is bewildered. She can’t decide whether to live in England to keep her love for Edward or follow St. John to a far-away place to do divine missions. At this time, she asks a favor from God. If she didn't hear Edward’s call, most probably she would follow St. John to fulfill God’s mission as long as life endures if God directs her to do so.Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books. In this novel, Charlotte creates a successful woman character: Jane Eyre. She is self-respecting and independent, but also has the submissive aspects as a woman. If you are interested in people of such characteristics, this book is a good choice for you to consider.I think Jane Eyre is an excellent novel and I bellieve it is read and enjoyed by many people even today. The whole story is narrated by Jane in past-tense. In this way we can observe the heroine’s inside world clearly.Jane is certainly a classic model of brilliant woman in the Victorian Era. Charlotte created suc

h a character with simple words and sentences. Just compare her name “Jane” with those noble lady’s name-“ Georgiana”, “Blanche”, “Rosemond”-and you will know that she was plain in features but strong in character. I gain much courage from her as she struggled with her fate all the time. She had never surrendered to bad circumstances and always sought for true love and independence. I think the most moving scene in the story is when the secret was revealed and Jane decided to leave Rochester. What a strong determination did she have that she abandoned all she had including her true love to maintain her principles! In this novel, Charlotte criticized the Victorian assumptions about gender and social class. It has also raised questions on other subjects such as religion, gender relations, etc. Some critics have pointed out that there are too many coincidences in the story that it is nearly unbelievable. But all in all it is a good novel. Book Report of Jane Eyre 2009-10-18 17:24I have read a book called Jane Eyre. It has 274 pages. The book was wrote in 1846, and it’s the second novel of Charlotte Bronte. It was first published in autumn, 1847. Although the story is fictional, the life of the heroine and other peolple are based on the author or other people’s real life. It is said that, the book made a hit in the literary world when it first came into being. More than 100 famous scholars recommended this book together. Many peolple love it very much. The auther of the book, Charlotte Bronte, was born in Yorkshire, England. She had four sisters and a brother. The two younger sisters are also writers, and they’ve been called “Bronte Sisters”. Bronte’s mother died early, so their life were hard. But their father was knowledgeable, he often tought them read books. So Charlotte had great interesting in literature since she was young. In August, 1824, she was sent to a boarding school with her two sisters. The Lowood school in Jane Eyre was based on this shhool, and the lovely Helen was based on her older sisiter Maria. The physical conditions of the school were hard, it do harm to Charlotte’s health. After returning home, Charlotte learn music, painting, and writing with her sisters. When she was 14, she has wrote many novels, poems and plays. In the following years, she went to school and be a teacher after gratuation. In 1839 and 1841, she tried to be a tutor. But the job was discriminated at that time. She can’t bear that. Then she wanted to start a school with her sisters, but it also failed. She still had faith in writing. In antumn 1845, she published a book of poems. But only two of the books had been sold. The difficulty didn’t made them give up. The tried novels for a change. They sent their novels tigether. Two months later, Wuthering Heights by Emily and Agnes Grey by Anne, was accepted, but Charlotte’s The professor was sent back. Charlotte didn’t give up

and started another novel called Jane Eyre. And finally she succeeded. She also had many other famous books, such as Shirley and Villette. The heroine of the book is Jane Eyre, and the hero is Mr Rochester. They fell in love with each other. There are some other charactors in this book. Mrs Reed, Jane’s aunt, and her three child Eliza Reed, Georgiana Reed and Jone Reed. They all treat Jane bad when she was in their home. Jane’s mother Jane Reed and Jane’s father Jone Eyre both died when Jane was a baby. Mr Brocklehurst is the headmaster of Lowood school, he is man like Mrs Reed. In Lowood school, Jane makes friends with Helen. She is a nice girl, it’s a pitty she dies in Lowood. The housekeeper of Mr Rochester, Mrs Fairfax, is Jane’s friend. Bertha Mason is Rochester’s wife. But she has madness. She invite Jane to be Adele’s governess. And Adele is the daughter of Rochester’s friend. After Jane leave Rochester’s house, she live in Moor House. She lives there with Diana, Mary and St John Rivers. That’s the main characters of this book. The book tells us the story of Jane Eyre’s life. She has a hard childhood. She was discriminated in her aunt’s house. She can’t live like other children. And her cousin always punish her. Lowood school also fill with fear and death. The hard living condition makes Jane strong. She keeps seeking beautiful life and never give up. In her opinion, love should be equal. Though her social status is lower than Rochester, but she never care about that. In her eyes, they were the same. When she know that Mr Rochester has a wife, she leave him. Because she think she has been cheated, her self-respect is wounded. She leave the big house, because there’s something she think more important than money. But when she hear Mr Rochester’s house has burnt and Rochester has been disabled, she go to find him immediately. She protect her self-respect and find her true love. The story impressed me deeply. I admire Jane very much. She stands for independent ladies. From her story I can feel a strong lady fight for equal and true love. Nowadays many people think money is the most important thing, but in order for self-respect she can throw away every thing. And she finally find her true love. Besides we can also learn from her firm in character and her seeking for knowledge. We should keep our soul pure and fight for our dreams. The world is always so beautiful.
