Roman Holiday: a pure and sad love story Roman Holiday is what I like best among the films which I have enjoyed inthis term. The interesting story happened between princess and a ordinary reporter is unique. It just like the song “Lover Story” sang by Taylor Swift. I feel I was surrounded by graceful and funny cantus as the movie is going on. However, It doesn’t like the song because protagonists hide their sadness and helplessness by firm expressions.
The plot of film is as follow: The princess Ann falls asleep on bench, they met.Joe kindly offers her money so that she can take a taxi home,But Anna is unconscious and refused to “cooperate”.Finally,Joe have to let Anna spend the night in his apartment. Joe sees a picture of her and recognizes that it is the same young woman who is in his apartment. Joe immediately sees the opportunity before him and proposes an exclusive interview for $5000, Hennessy agrees but bets Joe $500 that he will not succeed. The second day,Joe hides the fact that he is a reporter, he offers
to spend the day with Anya, showing her Rome. He also surreptitiously calls his photographer friend, Irving Radovich , to tag along to secretly take pictures. Eventually, they spend the day seeing the sights in Roman. That night, at a dance on a boat, government agents finally track her down and try to escort her away, but a wild melee breaks out and Joe and Anya escape. Through all this, they gradually fall in love, but Anya realizes that their relationship cannot continue. She finally bids farewell to Joe and returns to the embassy.
The next day, Princess Ann appears at the postponed news conference, and is alarmed to find Joe and Irving among the members of the press. Irving takes her picture with the same miniature cigarette lighter/camera he had used the previous day. He then presents her with the photographs he had taken that day, discreetly tucked in an envelope, as a memento of her adventure. Joe lets her know, by allusion, that her secret is safe with them. She, in turn, works into her bland
statements a coded message of love and gratitude to Joe. She then departs, leaving Joe to linger for a while, contemplating what might have been. Rome Holiday attracts me. The black-and-white images can’t mask the brilliance of the film. The love story is fairy tale. The princess is very beautiful and reporter is handsome. Hepburn is like an angel who has amusing appearance, charming smiles and kind heartin this real world. It is a good thing for me to see the movie performed by her. The love story is transient ,breathtaking and heartbreaking. It has the symbolic meanings:when we eventually find what we have dreamt a lot before. We feel excited and thank to god for the opportunity. But in reality we just experiencetemporary excitement and have to let it go because of various reasons. We can do nothing but shaking our heads and sob unceasingly. When we stand up, what cover over our heads is blue sky, because the blue represents open-mind and deep hided sadness. But, good memory enriched our
lives. It symbols our dreams and journey we have experienced.
Roman Holiday, a classic film, conveys love’s purity and preciousness forever.
