Notting Hill

能真诚面对威廉说出:――I‘m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.‖我只是一个普通女孩,站在一个她所爱的男孩面前求他爱她‖。

Notting Hill is a romantic comedy about an ordinary man who is in love with the most famous woman in the world. Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) is the world most famous movie star. Her picture has been plastered on the cover of every magazine, and every time she makes a move, the entire world knows about it.

William Thacker (Hugh Grant) owns a travel bookstore. His business is stagnant, he has the roommate from hell, and since his divorce, his love life is completely non-existent.

For both, something or someone seems to be missing. And when Anna and William paths unexpectedly cross in the eclectic neighborhood of Notting Hill, romance is the last thing on their minds. The Couple comes to face the ultimate question: can two people fall in love with the whole world watching?

Notting Hill is a 1999 British romantic comedy film set in Notting Hill, London, released on May 21, 1999.

William "Will" Thacker (Hugh Grant) owns an independent bookshop in Notting Hill that specialises in travel writing. He has been coping with divorce after his wife left him for a man who looked exactly like Harrison Ford. He shares his house with an uninhibited Welsh eccentric named Spike (Rhys Ifans).

Thacker encounters Hollywood actress Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) when she enters his shop to buy a book. Minutes later, the pair collide in the street, causing Will to spill his orange juice on both of them. He offers his house across the road for Anna to change. She accepts and, having changed, surprises Will with a kiss and starts their mutual attraction.

3

Days later, Will asks Spike if he has any messages. Spike has trouble writing or remembering messages but does recall "some American girl called Anna" who mentioned a "completely different name". Anna is at the Ritz, under the name "Flintstone", and has asked Will to visit. Will is allowed in, but her room has now become the centre for a press day and he is mistaken for a journalist. (In panic he claims he works for Horse & Hound.) He has to interview all the cast of Anna's film, Helix, even though he has not seen the film. Will's sister Honey (Emma Chambers) is about to have a birthday party, and when Will has a moment alone with Anna, he invites her to it.

There, at Max (Tim McInnerny) and Bella's (Gina McKee) house, Anna feels at home with Will's friends, putting up a good case for the "last brownie" to be awarded to the most pathetic of them. Afterwards they trespass in a private London square. They go on more dates, to the cinema and to a restaurant. Anna invites Will to her room, only to find her American boyfriend, Jeff King (an uncredited cameo by Alec Baldwin), already there. She pretends to be pleased to see him, and Will pretends to be a room-service waiter. When King steps out of the room, Anna apologizes; she thought King had broken up with her. Will realizes he must leave.

Later, after actually breaking up with King, Anna goes to Will's house hoping to stay. Images of her that look like a porn film have been leaked to the press and she needs to hide. The pair sleep together for the first time. In the morning, Will is stunned to see reporters at the doorstep, alerted by careless talk by Spike at the pub. Angry at what she views as Will's betrayal, she leaves, and he decides to forget her... unsuccessfully. One year later, Anna returns to London to make a Henry James film, which Will had suggested. Will approaches the set of the film, and Anna invites him in to watch. He listens via the sound system while Anna is between scenes and overhears her telling her co-star that Will is "just some guy". Disappointed, Will leaves. The next day, Anna comes to the bookshop again, explaining that she was just being discreet and hoping to repair their relationship, but Will, still hurt, turns her down. Having brought him a present, she leaves it behind, still wrapped; it turns out to be an original Marc Chagall painting, La Mariée, that she had seen a print of in Will's home.

Will meets his friends, who are supportive of his decision to reject Anna until Spike arrives and promptly calls him a "daft prick". He quickly realizes he has made the biggest mistake of his life by letting her go. They group searches for Anna, racing across London in Max's car. They reach Anna's press conference and Will persuades her to stay in England with him. Anna and Will marry, the film concluding with a shot of Will and a pregnant Anna on a park bench in Notting Hill.

Her agent told her it was "the best romantic comedy she had ever read" Roberts said that after reading the script she decided she was "going to have to do this". The Day After Tomorrow

THE STORY:

The Day After Tomorrow shows a disastrous and abrupt climate change.

After watching the great film The Day After Tomorrow, I was convulsed. ?How nice 9

to see the warm sunshine!‘ after watching the film, I said to my friend. Although man conquer the nature, who can pledge that we will win if this comes true? If we still haven‘t wake up to protect our environment, maybe there will not be a day for our humans to regret when this day comes true. Man may die away like dinosaur from this planet. The film gives me the feeling of death, simply more devilish than death.

We human beings have no reasons to cruelly kill other creatures and destroy our environment. Think of it, if animals and plants all have feelings just like we human beings, when we catch and kill animals, when we trample on the flowers, when we wantonly snatch resource from our mother earth, do we ever consider repaying our mother, or do we ever consider how these small things will feel. Put us to their position, if we were treated like this, could we feel well? Does it only because they are small, so they have to suffer what man do on them? Then why could we be so ease and never think of resipiscence?

Our environment was changed by many reasons, zoology is in a delicate balance, and we cannot control this balance for the moment, but we have the power to break it. Then the nature comes down to us, to take back what belongs to nature originally. But the nature cannot ask itself, so it cautions us until we gradually come to realize.

We Chinese can solve starvation; we should also have the confidence to handle the environmental issue. Just like an environmentalist said: ?Everyone is important, everyone can exert his function, and everyone can bring some changes.‘

All over the world, the weather is warmer and warmer, the number of propagation is less and less, but the pollution is more and more severity. This is where we are living in. When we can‘t see our mother river runs mountains high, and can‘t hear the song it makes, can we turn to a blind eye, or can we sit still waiting for death? Of cause not. We are the master of the future, the future of the world can‘t be worse in our hands, but to be better by our efforts.

We should do what we can from our daily life; only in this way will we never have that kind of terrible tomorrow.

The Day After Tomorrow is a 2004 American science-fiction film that depicts the catastrophic effects of both global warming and global cooling in a series of extreme weather events that usher in a new ice age.

Plot Summary

Jack Hall is (Dennis Quaid) in Antarctica with two colleagues, Frank and Jason (Jay O. Sanders and Dash Mihok), drilling for ice core samples on the Larsen Ice Shelf for the NOAA when the ice shelf breaks off from the rest of the continent. Jack presents his findings on global warming at a United Nations conference where diplomats, including the Vice-President of the United States, (Kenneth Welsh) are unconvinced by Jack's theory.

Jack's concerns resonate with Professor Terry Rapson (Ian Holm) of the Hedland Climate Research Centre in Scotland. Two buoys in the North Atlantic 10

simultaneously show a massive drop in water temperature, and Rapson concludes that melting of the polar ice has begun disrupting the North Atlantic current. He calls Jack, whose paleoclimatological weather model holds reconstructional data of the palaeoclimate change that caused the first Ice Age, to predict what will happen. Jack believed that the events would not happen for many years, but he, Frank, Jason, and NASA's meteorologist Janet Tokada (Tamlyn Tomita) build a forecast model with his, Rapson's, and Tokada's data.

Across the world, violent weather causes mass destruction. The U.S. President (Perry King), authorizes the FAA to suspend air traffic over the United States due to severe turbulence. As three RAF helicopters fly to evacuate the British Royal Family, they enter the eye of a massive hurricane-like superstorm, that causes a temperature drop below ?150 °F (?101.1 °C) that freezes their fuel lines and rotors, causing them to crash.

Jack's son, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is in New York City for an academic competition with his friends Brian and Laura (Arjay Smith and Emmy Rossum). During the competition, the weather becomes increasingly violent with strong winds and torrential rains. Sam calls his father, promising to be on the next train home. However, the storm worsens, forcing subways and Grand Central Station to close. A tidal wave half the height of the Statue of Liberty hits Manhattan, putting the island under several feet of water. Sam and his friends seek refuge in the New York Public Library.

Survivors in the Northern United States are forced to flee south, with some Americans illegally crossing the border into Mexico. After advising the Executive Office of the President of the United States to evacuate half the country, Jack sets off for Manhattan to find his son, accompanied by Frank and Jason. Their truck crashes into a snow-covered tractor-trailer just past Philadelphia, so the group continues on snowshoes. During the journey, Frank falls through the glass roof of a snowbound shopping mall. As Jason and Jack try to pull Frank up, the glass under them continues to crack; Frank sacrifices himself by cutting the rope.

Inside the library, Sam advises everyone of his father's instruction to stay indoors. Few listen, and the small group that remains burns books to keep warm and breaks the library's vending machine for food. Laura is afflicted with blood poisoning, so Sam, Brian, and J.D. search for penicillin in a Russian cargo ship that drifted inland. The eye of the superstorm begins to pass over the city with its ?150 °F (?101.1 °C) temperatures, and the entire New York skyline begins to freeze. The three return to the library with medicine, food and supplies, barely making it to safety.

During the deep freeze, Jack and Jason take shelter in an abandoned Wendy's, then resume their journey after the storm dissipates, finally arriving in New York City. They find the library buried in snow, but find Sam's group alive and are rescued by helicopters. The new President orders search and rescue teams to look for other survivors, having been given hope by the survival of Sam's group. The movie ends 11

with two astronauts looking down at the view of the Earth from the International Space Station, showing a majority of the northern hemisphere covered in ice, and a drastic reduction in the pollution content.

The Day After Tomorrow is a 2004 American science-fiction disaster film that depicts the catastrophic effects of global warming in a series of extreme weather events that usher in a new ice age. It did well at the box office, grossing $542,771,772 internationally. Domestically, it is the sixth highest grossing movie not to be #1 in the US box office (behind My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Alvin and the Chipmunks and its sequel, and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs), but worldwide, it is third behind only Ice Age 3 and Casino Royale. The movie was filmed in Montreal, and is the highest grossing Hollywood film in history to be filmed in Canada (if adjusted for inflation). Cast

The story is about a gorilla, King Kong as those guys who arrested him and took him to New York. Personally I prefer to use him than it! He lived on a mountain alone until one day he saw a girl Annie, then life changed, he changed. I don't know whether ''love'' is a fit word to describe the relationship between him and Annie .Maybe he just needed someone to keep his company and play some little tricks to make him happy. And Annie did so. He wanted her to be with him, stayed at his side always. He fought with three dinosaurs to protect her, he chased after her in spite of those dangerous traps waiting for him. Just for her, everything...

when he saved her, she looked at him with her grateful eye. He turned head to the other side. Yet, he was angry, maybe he was complaining why she left him, just like a boy in love. He also needed to be coaxed. He spread his palm, expecting her. She sat on his palm, and they enjoyed the beautiful sunset together. Their back and the view then were so moving, so touching.

In New York, he was searching for her and she sensed his call. She ran towards him again. She showed before him, they walked towards each other .he had her, and for the first time she liked to be with him of her own will. He glided on the ice to make her happy.

In the end of the movie, a reporter wondered why he climbed to the top, which meant a suicide. Another journalist answered that ''just animal nature''. Maybe the journalist thought he (as an animal) was stupid, but my understanding about his behaving like that was only his desire to watch another sunset with her, like what he did, put his hand on his chest, let her know he understood the word she told him ''beautiful''......

【Plot Summary】

Carl Denham needs to finish his movie and has the perfect location; Skull Island. But he still needs to find a leading lady. This 'soon-to-be-unfortunate' soul is Ann Darrow. No one knows what they will encounter on this island and why it is so mysterious, but once they reach it, they will soon find out. Living on this hidden island is a giant 13

gorilla and this beast now has Ann is its grasps. Carl and Ann's new love, Jack Driscoll must travel through the jungle looking for Kong and Ann, whilst avoiding all sorts of creatures and beasts. But Carl has another plan in mind.

Set in the 1930s, this is the story of a young and beautiful actress Ann Darrow from the world of vaudeville who finds herself lost in depression-era New York and her luck changes when she meets an over-ambitious filmmaker Carl Denham who brings her on an exploratory expedition to a remote island where she finds compassion and the true meaning of humanity with an ape Kong. The beauty and the beast finally meet their fate back in the city of New York where the filmmaker takes and displays the ape in quest of his fame by commercial exploitation which ultimately leads to catastrophe for everyone including a playwright Jack Driscoll who falls in love with Ann and plays an unlikely hero by trying to save her from Kong and her destiny.

Set in the 1930s, this is the story of a group of explorers and documentary filmmakers who travel to the mysterious Skull Island (near Sumatra) to investigate legends of a giant gorilla named Kong. Once there, they discover that King Kong is a real creature, living in a massive jungle where creatures from prehistoric times have been protected and hidden for millions of years. As the explorers search for the great ape, their quest puts them up against both Kong and his dinosaur enemies. Ultimately, it is the attention of a beautiful human woman that soothes Kong long enough for him to be subdued by the explorers and shipped back to New York, where his bleak future involves being put on display in front of humans... but how long can even the mightiest shackles of man hold back an ape 25 feet tall?

A film director and his crew go to a mysterious island to shoot their picture, when they find out the legendary beast on the island does exist, and troubles come when the natives capture the crew's leading lady as a sacrifice to the monster, King Kong. Thus, the crew ventures into the jungle of the island to find the creature, and capture it.

Carl Denham: And lo, the beast looked upon the face of beauty. And beauty stayed his hand. And from that day on, he was as one dead.

Plot

The film opens in New York City, 1933, during the Great Depression. Having lost her job as a vaudeville actress, Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) is hired by troubled filmmaker Carl Denham (Jack Black) to star in his new movie with popular actor Bruce Baxter (Kyle Chandler). Darrow agrees when she learns her favorite playwright Jack Driscoll (Adrian Brody) is the screenwriter. As the SS Venture sails to mysterious Skull Island, Darrow and Driscoll fall in love. A warrant is out for Denham's arrest and Captain Englehorn (Thomas Kretschmann) begins having second 14

thoughts about the trip. Despite his attempt to turn around, the ship is lost in fog and crashes into rocks encircling the island.

Denham and the crew explore the island and are attacked by its natives, who kidnap Darrow to sacrifice her to their god "Kong". Kong, a giant ape, takes Darrow to his lair in the island's interior. As the filmmakers and the ship's crew search the island for Darrow, they battle numerous dinosaurs, giant invertebrates, and other deadly and exotic dangers. Although the rescuers suffer many casualties, Denham wants to both rescue Darrow and capture Kong as a way to save his job.

In Kong's lair, Darrow is frightened of the ape at first but realizes that he is gentle and curious about her. She entertains Kong with juggling and dancing from the theater; they watch the sunset together; and she attempts to communicate with him using sign language. Driscoll interrupts Darrow's befriending of the ape and the ship's crew traps Kong as he chases them. Although Darrow opposes Denham's plan, the ape is subdued with chloroform for the trip to New York, and Denham promises the crew that Kong will make them all rich.

Denham presents Kong — the Eighth Wonder of the World on Broadway, starring Baxter and an imprisoned Kong. Darrow refuses to participate in the show, which sensationally recreates Kong's capture. Kong becomes enraged when he sees that the lead actress is not Darrow, then breaks his chains after camera flashes anger him further. As the audience flees, Kong destroys the theater and wreaks havoc in Times Square before Driscoll lures Kong away. The ape and Darrow reunite in Central Park, which calms him down, but they are interrupted by the military.

Kong climbs the Empire State Building with Darrow in his grasp. Observing the dawn, Kong repeats the sign for "beautiful" that she used in his lair, causing Darrow to realize his intelligence. Before she can attempt further communication, they are attacked. Kong battles the Army's Curtiss Helldivers on the summit of the observation spire. He is hit by several bursts of gunfire, and gazes at a distraught Darrow before falling to his death. As Driscoll comforts Darrow, hundreds of people run to Kong's body. A man tells Denham that the airplanes killed him, but he replies, "It wasn't the airplanes. It was Beauty killed the Beast."

When you're young, everything feels like the end of the world. It‘s not, it‘s just the beginning. I mean you might have to meet a few more jerks. One day, you're gonna meet a boy who treats you the way you deserve to be treated. Like the sun rises and sets with you.

The story is based on a true story about a man named Christopher Gardner. Gardner has invested heavily in a device known as a "Bone Density scanner". He feels like he has made these devices. However, they do not sell as they are marginally better than the current technology at a much higher price. On top of that, one of these does not work. As Gardner tries to figure out on how to fix the faulty one and sell the others, his wife leaves him; he loses his house, his bank account, and credit cards. Forced to live out in the streets with his son, Gardner is now desperate to find a steady job; he takes on a job as a stockbroker, but before he can receive pay, he needs to go through 6 months of training, and to sell his devices.

"The Pursuit of Happyness" -- the title comes from a misspelled schoolhouse mural -- has a lot on its mind but mostly this: If America is about the promise of bettering oneself, why does it have to be so freaking hard? In the movie, Jefferson's Declaration of Independence words about happiness kept recurring to Chris Gardner. Every day, Christ had to work hard from morning till night, but still could hardly make a living. Chris saw a bunch of suits, mostly male, pouring out of the Dean Witter Reynolds 18

brokerage firm in downtown San Francisco. They all looked ―happy,‖ ―Why not me? ― Christ wondered. He did have an adorable boy, Christopher, but wife Linda was becoming a scarecrow of overworked anxiety. Finally, his wife left Christ because of life pressure, leaving him and her five-year-old son, Christopher. And naturally, Christ became a single father.

With the failure of his business, Christ had no money to pay for the rent, so they were driven away from the flat. They became homeless. They slept in asylum, subway station public bathroom or anywhere as a temporary shelter. The destitution of life was absolutely depressing, but for his son‘s future, for his own belief, Christ never gave up and he still strongly believed that happiness would come one day if he worked hard enough today.

With his great efforts, Christ won a six-month internship at Dean Witter, but there was no pay at all. So on one hand, Christ had to work hard to make a living; on the other hand, he had to fight for his intern work, since only one of the twenty interns would succeed finally. Besides, he had to take good care of his son after day care. However, Christ made it with his amazing willpower.

Christ was unfortunate, for he got a wife who was not understandable at all (though she has her own difficulties) and was in bad luck with his business. But he was very fortunate also, for he got a son who was very thoughtful and, I think, tough life experiences always make a great person.

It is said that this movie is inspired by a true story, and I want to say, this movie does inspire me a lot. What impressed me most are: Christ‘s wife left him because of life pressure; Christ‘s love to his son and Christ‘s strong belief towards life. Through these, I know that it is not easy to be a good husband and a good Papa, since in reality, only love cannot only make everything. And I also learn that one has to strongly believe in himself, no matter how difficult the situation is, but of course, hard-working is indispensable.

With a title like The Pursuit of Happyness, you expect the characters to get to the promised land. They do, but if the journey matters more than the destination, this is a 19

movie to skip. The Pursuit of Happyness is long, dull, and depressing. It expands into two hours a story that could have been told more effectively in one. This is not the feel-good movie of the season unless you believe that a few moments of good cheer can redeem 110 minutes of gloom. Sitting through The Pursuit of Happyness is a chore. Downbeat movies aren't inherently bad (in fact, many are powerful), but this one provides artificial characters in contrived circumstances. How is it that movies "inspired by a real story" often feel more fake than those fully embedded in the realm of fiction?

The film's most compelling scenes are those that show Chris struggling to enter the rat race. Granted, this is no Glengarry Glen Ross, but it shows the pressure these salesmen are under and how important the contact lists are. In the overall scheme of things, however, these sequences are background noise. They are neither plentiful nor lengthy. The movie spends more time following Chris on his futile sales rounds for the bone density scanner than it does accompanying him during his broker training.

Christopher: I know what it means! It means we're not going to the game.

Christopher Gardner: And it was at that time that I thought about Thomas Jefferson writing that Declaration of Independence. Him saying that we have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I thought about how he knew to put the 'pursuit' in there, like no one can actually have happiness. We can only pursue it. The Pursuit of Happyness is a 2006 American biographical drama film directed by Gabriele Muccino and based on the life of Chris Gardner. The film stars Will Smith as Gardner, an on-and-off-homeless salesman-turned stockbroker.

Plot

In 1981, in San Francisco, Chris Gardner (Will Smith) invests his family's savings in Osteo National bone-density scanners, a portable medical imaging device more expensive, but with a higher resolution than a traditional x-ray. The investment proves 20

to be a white elephant which financially breaks the family and as a result, his wife Linda (Thandie Newton) leaves him and their son Christopher (Jaden Smith). While downtown he meets a manager for Dean Witter and impresses him by solving a Rubiks Cube. This new relationship earns him the chance to become a stockbroker , but nearly turns down when the position turns out to be unpaid. Chris is setback when his bank account is garnished by the IRS for back taxes. And as a result of unpaid taxes he becomes homeless; he is forced at one point to stay in a bathroom at a BART station. Motivation drives him to find the Glide Memorial United Methodist Church, which is dominantly a women homeless shelter for single moms and their children, but due to demand for the limited room Chris must race from work in order to land a place in line. Disadvantaged by his limited work hours, and knowing that maximizing his client contacts and profits is the only way to earn the one position that he and his 19 competitors are fighting for, Chris develops a number of ways to work more efficiently and reaches out to potential high value customers, defying protocol. Regardless of his challenges, he never reveals his circumstances to his co-workers even going so far as to loan one of his bosses five dollars for a cab. Concluding his internship, Chris is called into a meet with the big guys of the company. His struggle has paid off and he is offered the position. Fighting back tears he rushes to his son's daycare, hugging him. They walk down the street, joking with each other and are passed by a man in a business suit (the real Chris Gardner in a cameo). The epilogue reveals that Chris went on to form his own multi-million dollar brokerage firm. Up

An elderly Carl finally arranges for the trip, but Ellie suddenly becomes ill and dies, leaving him a lonely and bitter widower.

Years later, Carl still lives in the house, now surrounded by urban development, but he refuses to sell it. He then ends up in a tussle with a construction worker over his broken mailbox, and is forced by a court order to move into a it off its foundations. A young named Russell becomes an accidental passenger, having pestered Carl earlier in an attempt to earn After surviving a thunderstorm, the house lands near a large ravine facing Paradise Falls. Carl and Russell harness themselves to the still-buoyant house and begin to walk it around the ravine, hoping to reach the falls before the balloons deflate. They reach her chicks, and then a dog named Dug who wears a special collar that allows him to speak. They are then ambushed by a pack of similar dogs led by Alpha (also Bob Peterson), and taken to Dug's master, who turns out to be an explains that he has spent the years since his disgrace searching Paradise Falls for the giant bird. When Russell innocently reveals his friendship with Kevin, Muntz becomes disturbingly hostile, prompting the pair, Kevin, and Dug to flee, chased by Muntz's army of dogs; Kevin is injured during the escape. Muntz eventually catches up with them and starts a fire beneath Carl's house, forcing Carl to choose between saving it or Kevin. Carl rushes to put out the fire, allowing Muntz to take the bird. Carl and Russell eventually reach the falls, but Russell is angry with Carl over his selfishness.

Settling into his home, Carl is sadly poring over Ellie's childhood scrapbook when, to his surprise, he discovers photos of their married life on the formerly blank pages, and a final note from Ellie thanking him for the "adventure" and encouraging him to go on 23

a new one. Reinvigorated, he goes to find Russell, only to see him sailing off alone on some balloons to save Kevin. Carl lightens his house by dumping all his possessions, and gives chase. Russell is captured by Muntz, but Carl manages to board the dirigible in flight and free both Russell and Kevin. Muntz pursues them around the airship, with Dug and Russell clinging to her back, just as Muntz is about to close in. Muntz leaps after them, only to snag his foot on some balloon lines and fall to his death. Freed from its tether, the house descends below the clouds and out of sight.

Carl reunites Kevin with her chicks, then flies the dirigible back to the city. When Russell's father misses his son's Senior Explorer promotion ceremony, Carl takes over and proudly presents Russell with his final badge: the grape soda cap badge that Ellie gave to Carl when they first met. The two then enjoy some ice cream together, sitting on the curb outside the shop as Russell and his father used to do, with the dirigible parked nearby. Meanwhile, Carl's house is shown to have landed on the cliff beside Paradise Falls.

With the arrival of this "adaptation" of Gulliver's Travels, author Jonathan Swift must be spinning in his grave fast enough to make a top dizzy. If Swift was alive, no doubt he'd demand that his name be removed from the credits. Little of his satirical classic beyond a few names, locations, and general ideas have survived the transition from the written page to the dumbed-down family adventure foisted upon the public by director Rob Letterman and screenwriters Joe Stillman and Nicholas Stoller. Still, the chief sin committed by Gulliver's Travels is not that it's a poor adaptation but that its entertainment value is almost nonexistent.

Only the movie's "high concept" remains the same as the one in the book, and the narrative ransacks no more than Book One of Swift's Gulliver's Travels (with a brief nod to Book Two). So Gulliver's Travels is about the voyage of Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) to the mysterious Island of the Lilliputians, a race of six-inch high "little people," where he becomes a figure of great curiosity and becomes embroiled in local politics. There ends any common ground the movie has with the book. In this version, Gulliver is a mail clerk at a newspaper office in Manhattan rather than a surgeon in England. To court favor with Darcy Silverman (Amanda Peet), the travel editor, he agrees to fly to Bermuda to investigate "new findings" about the Bermuda Triangle. Once there, he heads out to sea in a one-man craft, becomes lost, and winds up in the country of Lilliput. After an initial period as a prisoner in which his lone friend is fellow dungeon denizen Horatio (Jason Segel), he finds favor with the royal family - King Theodore (Billy Connolly), Queen Isabelle (Catherine Tate), and Princess Mary (Emily Blunt) - and becomes Lilliput's protector, displaying disgruntled General Edward (Chris O'Dowd). After singlehandedly defeating the would-be invading fleet of the rival country Blefuscu, Gulliver's status in Lilliput soars, but this encourages Edward to commit an act of treason in an attempt to bring down his big rival.

To make Gulliver's Travels more "modern," the filmmakers have injected pop references to Star Wars, Titanic, and KISS, while having Gulliver build a replica of Times Square in Lilliput. The climactic battle pits the local giant against a Transformer - something not even Jules Verne would have conceived. Gulliver's visit to Brobdingnag is limited to a five minute sequence in which he finds himself captive in a doll house. None of Swift's themes about government, religion, and human nature make their way into the cluttered mess of a screenplay, and any satirical elements have been blunted beyond recognition to leave room for the fatuous, unfunny humor of the leading man. In short, for fans of Swift and good cinema, Gulliver's Travels is a disaster.

Once again, Jack Black proves himself incapable of playing someone other than Jack Black. He's like the drunk, annoying cousin who shows up at a family reunion and engages in a series of outrageous antics to display how cool and funny he is when, in reality, he's merely irritating. The problem isn't simply that Black is miscast, but he believes he's hilarious and, by foisting this faux amusing personality on us, he transforms Gulliver's Travels into an almost unendurable 85 minutes. The filmmakers succeed in making Chris O'Dowd's Edward more dislikable than Gulliver - an approach that succeeds only in ensuring that viewers have no rooting interest in the final smack down between man and Transformer. Emily Blunt reportedly turned down the Scarlett Johansson role in Iron Man 2 to make this film, which indicates she needs to fire her agent.

The only arena in which Gulliver's Travels plays an adequate game is in visual effects. The interaction of big Gulliver with the tiny Lilliputians is handled without major gaffes. It looks like Jack Black is approximately twelve times the size of his co-stars. My requisite comment about the 25

box office-inflating 3-D is that it's largely inconsequential but non-intrusive. One of my first thoughts on leaving the theater was to wonder why anyone would pay a surcharge for the meager benefits provided here for 3-D viewing. Upon further consideration, I amended that: Why would anyone pay anything to see this movie, regardless of how many dimensions it's being shown in?

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Magic is everywhere in Disney's THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE -- the fun family adventure from the creators of NATIONAL TREASURE. Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a modern-day sorcerer with his hands full defending Manhattan against dark forces. When a seemingly average kid shows hidden potential, Balthazar takes his reluctant recruit on a crash course in the art and science of magic to become the ultimate sorcerer's apprentice. Experience more extraordinary thrills, heart-stopping action and spectacular special effects than you can imagine as these unlikely partners show us that the real world is far more magical than we ever knew!

Sorcerer‘s Apprentice, mostly just mentioning things that are clear from the trailer. People that would prefer not to know anything about the plot before seeing the movie should skip the next paragraph.

Minor Plot Discussion

Sorcerer Balthazar Blake has been using his skill in magic to battle evil sorcerers for years. He discovers that Dave has potential to be a powerful sorcerer and makes him his apprentice. Horvath is one of the evil sorcerers and he is back after having been magically imprisoned by Balthazar for a very long time. Balthazar starts training Dave so they can face off against Horvath.

End of Minor Plot Discussion

I think the plot of The Sorcerer‘s Apprentice works well to make an interesting and entertaining movie. There is more going on throughout the movie than I had expected. A few things that happen are somewhat surprising, though there are also some predictable things that happen as well. I don‘t mind the predictable parts because the movie is so entertaining and fun. The movie is loosely based on the Sorcerer‘s Apprentice segment of the animated movie Fantasia. One scene in the movie, which is somewhat cute and entertaining, is definitely influenced by that segment. Some people may not like that the movie is influenced by Fantasia, but I think the story is good enough to make this movie stand on its own.

Magic plays a very important part in The Sorcerer‘s Apprentice since the main characters, as well as a few more minor characters, have varying degrees of magical abilities. Some explanations about the way the magic works in the movie are shared during the first few minutes. Those explanations make sense with what is going on. Balthazar is shown to be a powerful sorcerer fairly early in the movie and he does all sorts of spells throughout the movie. A few of the spells are different from ones I‘ve seen in other movies. Some of the training Dave goes through is 26

shown. I really enjoyed all the magic stuff in the movie. People who don‘t like movies dealing with magic will probably want to pick something else to see.

The fights between various characters add a bit of action to what is going on. There is only a little bit of violence, none of which is extreme or that graphic. Since the movie is rated PG, it is mostly family friendly. One or two things that happen could be scary or upsetting to younger children, so parents may want to check the movie out first. The movie isn‘t really funny overall, but there is humor in several scenes. Some of the humor, like how Dave‘s attempts at spells, is a little silly, but it works. The funny things that pop up do help to lighten the mode a bit. Special effects are used throughout the movie, mostly in relation to the spells being done. Dave does show off an experiment he has been doing at one point. I have no idea if what he did is possible or realistic, but it does look really cool. The special effects are done well and I think they enhance what is going on. Several things just wouldn‘t have worked well without the effects.

A tiny bit of romance is added to The Sorcerer‘s Apprentice through Dave‘s interest in Becky. He isn‘t that confident, so it does take him a while to be able to say much of anything to her. The developing relationship is a more minor plot element that doesn‘t receive a lot of attention. It does add a bit of complication since it does distract Dave. The relationship is rather sweet. Some references are made to the feelings that Balthazar has for Veronica, another sorcerer who fought evil with him.

There really isn‘t a lot of character development for any of the characters. Balthazar is a very skilled, intelligent sorcerer who has been focused on one thing for a very long time. The character is interesting and more complex than he seems at first. I really like Nicolas Cage in the part even with the shaggy hair - it ends up working for the character. Cage makes Balthazar likable and believable, though it would have been nice if there had been more development for him. Veronica is another powerful sorcerer who has been fighting evil. She is rather important even though she isn‘t in as much of the movie. Monica Bellucci does good with the part.

Dave is an intelligent though somewhat nerdy college student. He does really well with physics and has trouble talking to the girl he likes. He has doubts about his abilities as a sorcerer and seems to look at it as just something cool to do for a while even though he has already encountered Horvath. Jay Baruchel is fine in the part, though there is something that seems a little off about her performance in some scenes. Becky is the girl that Dave is interested in. She is very pretty and popular, so she does seem out of his league. She isn‘t stuck up and she doesn‘t look down on him. Teresa Palmer is fine in the part. Dave‘s friend Bennett turns up in a few short scenes and ultimately ends up not doing much. Bennett really doesn‘t add anything, so I‘m not sure why he‘s around at all.

Horvath is the main evil sorcerer that Balthazar and Dave have to deal with. Horvath has a somewhat complicated history, which helps to make him a more interesting character. He is a bit over the top every so often, but that works for this character. He makes a good villain for the movie and Alfred Molina is really good in the part. Drake Stone is a sorcerer who has been working as a magician that Horvath recruits for help. Drake is very showy and doesn‘t seem to take what he is doing seriously. He does kind of remind me of Criss Angel. Toby Kebbell is good in the part.

Main Cast

27

Jay Baruchel - Dave

Monica Bellucci - Veronica

Nicolas Cage - Balthazar

Toby Kebbell - Drake Stone

Alfred Molina - Horvath

Teresa Palmer - Becky

Jon Turteltaub – DirectThe

Sorcerer‘s Apprentice is a fun, entertaining family friendly adventure movie that kids and adults both can enjoy. A few things are predictable and Baruchel could be a bit better in his part, but the movie is worth watching. Fans of movies dealing with magic or fans of Nicolas Cage may find something to like about this one.
