There was once a lonely girl who longed so much for love. One day while she was walking in the woods she found two starving songbirds.
She took them home and put them in a small cage. She cared them with love and the birds grew strong.
Every morning they greeted her with a wonderful song. The girl felt great love for the birds.
One day the girl left the door to the cage open. The larger and stronger of the two birds flew from the cage.
The girl was so frightened that he would fly away. As he flew close, she grasped him wildly. Her heart felt glad at her success in capturing him.
Suddenly she felt the bird go limp. She opened her hand and stared in horror at the dead bird. Her desperate love had killed him.
She noticed the other bird moving back and forth on the edge of the cage.
She could feel his great need for freedom. He needed to soar into the clear, blue sky.
She lifted him from the cage and tossed him softly into the air. The bird circled once, twice, three times.
The girl watched delightedly at the bird's enjoyment. Her heart was no longer concerned with her loss.
She wanted the bird to be happy. Suddenly the bird flew closer and landed softly on her shoulder. It sang the sweetest melody that she had ever heard.

【必克故事会】狮子和老鼠的故事(中英双语) Once when a Lion was asleep a little Mouse began running up and down upon him; this soon wakened the Lion, who placed his huge paw upon him, and opened his big jaws to swallow him.
‘Pardon, O King,’ cried the little Mouse: ‘forgive me this time, I shall never forget it: who knows but what I may be able to do you a turn some of these days?’
The Lion was so tickled at the idea of the Mouse being able to help him, that he lifted up his paw and let him go.
Some time after the Lion was caught in a trap, and the hunters who desired to carry him alive to the King, tied him to a tree while they went in search of a waggon to carry him on.
Just then the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad plight in which the Lion was, went up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bound the King of the Beasts‘Was I not right?’ said the little Mouse.
