The final examination, which involves everyone into tension, is coming. With less and less time left, I feel obliged to devote myself to coping with the upcoming challenge. It is three months since I came to the school of material science and engineering. The exam will be my first show in the new school. I really expect a good result.

Not much time left as there is, I manage to take some time off to watch a popular TV play, <A nutshell of a house>. It has been a TV play with endless controversy since it was released last year. The story is concerning on the life of several white-collar workers who are struggling for owning their houses. Many social problems, such as corruption, embezzlement, unemployment and polarization between the rich and the poor, are referred to. Many so-called “dirty words” appear in the play. What shocks the public most is that the play focuses on the “latent rules” of the society, uncovering the hideous phenomena in the field of real estate and showing anger on the collaboration of the government with the businessmen.

The play gives rise to a fierce debate among the audience. Some people think it a great attempt to expose the dark side of society. They regard the play as a real portrayal of life of the white-collar workers in big cities. Unlike those TV plays blindly catering to the appetite of the authorities, the play sets a precedent for focusing on the dark side of the society. However, a lot of audiences hold the opposite view. They seem to take special care on the side effect of the play. The language is filthy and obscene, which will do harm to the construction of socialist civilization. Besides, they are worried that the undisguised description in the play may mislead the public, influencing the process of constructing a harmonious society.

I do like the TV play. As an undergraduate, I worry that the life of Guo Haiping, a graduate of Fudan University, may indicate my life. <A nutshell of a house>, as a TV play showing us the dark side of society, shouldn’t be regarded as deliberately distorting the fact to earn a benefit. We need an objective attitude to treat it. What we should think is not what harm the TV play does, however, is what we can benefit from it.
