I started teaching English abroad when I was 22, soon after I graduated from university. I'm 35 now and have been doing it ever since. If you want to travel the world, there’re a few ways to earn money while you do so. You can pick fruit, pull pints or teach English. The third one has definitely suited me best. I've taught in Russia, Argentina, Spain and Slovakia and stayed an average of two years in each country.

Our flat is in the Sanlitun area, not far from the main football stadium, and I work at various schools in the city. The demand for the English language teachers is a Chinese person wants a job in an international company, then English is a must. In Beijing there aren't enough teachers to go round. Both the Chinese government and the business world are investing heavily in getting people to speak English.

In China there's no shortage of work, though the pay can be different. If you teach English as a second language at an international school, you can earn 22,000 yuan a month, about ?2,200 or ?1,500. If you're short of cash, you can always do a bit of extra private tuition, which pays really well - about ?30 an hour.

It's a bit shock the first time you find yourself in a foreign country but the training can help. And people often ask how it's possible to teach English in a country where you don't speak the local language, but there's no such thing. In China, for example, everyone knows words like ―dollar‖ or ―I love you‖.

The best thing about Beijing is that you aren’t going to be lonely. There's a huge expat (侨民) community here, mostly based in Sanlitun and growing all the time. I don't know my way around Dublin or London very well, but I can tell you Beijing is the restaurant capital of the world.

49. According to the text, the author has taught English in China for ___________.

A. 2 years B. 5 years C. 13 years D. 15 years

50. The underlined word ―staggering‖ in Paragraph 2 means ___________.

A. puzzling B. permanent C. surprising D. steady

51. The author came to teach English in Beijing because ___________.

A. it was easy for him to earn money in Beijing

B. Beijing made a good impression on him

C. teaching English in Beijing was full of challenges

D. Beijing was just a stop of his travelling around the world

52. It can be inferred from the text that the author ___________.

A. felt happy to live and work in Beijing

B. preferred Chinese restaurants in Beijing

C. often felt it difficult to make himself understood

D. usually turned to the huge expat community in Sanlitun

Wood Buffalo National Park is Canada's largest national

park and one of the largest in the world. Established in 1922 to

protect the last remaining herds of bison in northern Canada, it

now protects an outstanding example of Canada's Northern

Boreal Plains. The park was named as a World Heritage Site in

1983. Here, visitors can find some of the best examples of karst

topography in North America, unique Salt Plains.

Banff National Park of Canada

Banff's rich history dates back to 1885, when three railway workers came across hot mineral springs surfacing from deep within the mountains. This discovery led to the establishment of Banff National Park, and marked the beginning of Canada's national parks system. Covering 6,641 square kilometers of valleys, mountains, glaciers, forests, meadows and rivers, Banff National Park is one of the world's premier destination spots. Banff is home to a number of outstanding geological and ecological features, including the hot springs and the Castleguard Caves, Canada's longest cave system.

St. Lawrence Islands National Park of Canada

Conceived in the 1870s, St. Lawrence Islands is one of Canada's

oldest national parks. Located in the scenic 1000 Islands Tourist Area,

this tiny jewel has a rich and complex natural human history. Centuries

ago, aboriginal peoples referred to it as the ―Garden of the Great Spirit‖.

Today, 24 scenic islands, along with a mainland area at Mallorytown

Landing, are included in the park. Here, water is the main attraction. Both

The nuclear leak (核泄漏) at the Fukushima power plant in Japan,

which followed the deadly earthquake two weeks ago, has caused an

unexpected reaction in China.

A sudden panic buying of salt occurred in many areas of our country about a week after the disaster. Salt in these districts was almost

bought up overnight. Some sellers wanted to make a fortune by raising the price. The panic buying was caused by two major rumors on the Internet: First, iodized (含碘的) salt can protect against radiation. Second, there might be a fall in sea-salt production following the nuclear pollution of the ocean. Such fears are not new. The same kind of panic happened with vinegar during the SARS outbreak and garlic in the time of the influenza period.

How can rumors like this spread in such a large country as China? Chen Fang, a reporter with

the China Youth Daily said that many Internet users say there is a ―crisis of trust‖ in today’s China. ―Experts don’t have enough credibility and people don’t trust all government announcements, either.‖ Chen said.

However, Chen added that the rumors should not be exaggerated (夸大). Many salt-buyers didn’t care; others simply failed to understand what experts and governments were talking about. They just did as their neighbors and friends did. It was a case of the blind following the blind – that was the real reason behind the big increase in the demand for salt.

On March 20, the Ministry of Commerce said: ―The panic buying of salt has stopped and the market is back to normal.‖ He also said China has enough salt to satisfy demand.

Now everything is back to normal, many want to return the salt they bought. But in the view of the Xinhua Daily Telegraph, ―It is true that these people paid extra money to buy the salt, but they created the crisis in the first place and caused the price to rise.‖ The newspaper continued: ―So there is no reason why they should get the money back.‖

Perhaps consumers should keep the salt to remind themselves that often rumors are without foundation.

57. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Crisis of trust B. Leak causes panic

C. A funny rumor D. The blind following the blind

58. Which is NOT the reason for which many people buy up iodized salt?

A. People are too ready to believe rumors.

B. People are afraid of a sea-salt shortage.

C. People find it a chance to make a fortune.

D. People think it protective to fight against radiation.

59. What is the Xinhua Daily Telegraph’s attitude towards the salt-buyers?

A. They should have only themselves to blame.

B. They should be punished for their activity.

C. They should trust experts and governments.

D. They should return the salt and get the money back.

60. What is the tone of the writing?

A. Considerate. B. Persuasive. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.

D

Some businesses and apartment buildings are telling kids to go away. A device (设备)called the Mosquito is being used in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New York to keep kids from gathering in big groups and causing trouble.

The Mosquito makes a noise that only kids can hear. About 3000 Mosquito units have been fixed in the United Kingdom. In the United States, managers of an apartment building in New York City recently fixed one to keep noisy kids from taking over the building’s entrance-hall.

A children’s rights agency in England wants the device forbidden. The agency says the device unfairly targets teens. Some also worry that the high sounds could hurt young ears. Fans of the Mosquito say it keeps kids out of trouble and off private property.

“Mosquito devices violate (侵犯) the human rights of kids. The use of the devices is targeted at kids because it considers all kids as troublemakers. The devices are also harmful because the noise could hurt kids’ hearing. Besides violating our rights, the Mosquito is dangerous. It could hurt the ears and the hearing of teens, babies and animals because they are more sensitive,‖ says California eighth grader Kelly Straky. ―It is not right to place the device in a public place.

Teenagers have as much right to public places as adults. I listened to the Mosquito sound, and it was extremely loud. It hurts not only your ears but also your whole head. It isn’t just annoying; it’s painful. It should not be allowed.‖

Fans of the Mosquito believe that property owners have a right to decide who can be on their property and who cannot. Mosquito devices are a method of protecting private property and keeping the peace. Property laws are put into place to protect the public.

―Yes, I do believe that the rights of teens should be valued, but we must always put ourselves in other people’s shoes and see the other side. In this case, doing so allows people to understand the negative effects, such as crime, that loitering (滞留) can have on an area or a community,‖ said Kayla Hill from New York.

When you make a mistake, big or small, cherish it as the most precious thing in the world. Because in some ways, it is.

reminded that we should try to avoid mistakes. We’ve been scolded when we make mistakes — at home, school and work. Maybe not always, but probably enough times to make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.

Yet without mistakes, we could not learn or grow. We don’t really consume information and instantly know it or know how to do it. Instead, we get information about something, from reading or from another person or from observing usually; then we construct a model in our mind, test it out by trying it in the real world, make mistakes, revise the model based on the results of our real-world experimentation and repeat, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, until we’ve pretty much learned how to do it well.

f you succeed at something, it’s probably something you already knew how to do it. You haven’t really grown much from that success — at most it’s the last step on your journey, not the whole journey. Most of the journey is made up of mistakes. By trial and error, we try out new strategies and make new discoveries, thus leading to higher payoffs. So if you value learning, if you value growing and improving, then you should value mistakes.

A. Just think about how we learn.

B. Everyone can make mistakes in their life.

C. Mistakes are how we learn to do something new.

D. It is natural that we are in a bad mood when we make mistakes.

E. Mistakes are amazing things that make a world of brilliance possible.

One possible version:

A smoking ban in all indoor public places in China, such as hotels and restaurants, has taken effect since May 1, 2011, but the survey we have recently conducted shows that the phenomenon of smoking still exists in about 40% of the indoor public places around our school.

As we know, smoking is harmful to health. It contributes a lot to lung cancer, of which many people have died in the past years. What’s worse, it can also cause many other diseases. Not only smokers themselves suffer from these smoking-related diseases, but also non-smokers around them have to breathe tobacco-polluted air.

For the sake of our health, ―no smoking‖ signs must be put up in indoor public places so that smokers can be kindly reminded not to smoke there. In addition, those who break this rule should be strictly punished by law. However, the most important is that every one of us should improve the awareness and take the responsibility to carry out the smoking ban.

Best wishes!

Yours Sincerely Li Hua
