The novel Pride and Prejudice I have read was published by Aviation Industry Press, Beijing, in May, 2004 and has 209 pages. The author of this novel is Jane Austen, an English writer. The reason why I choose it is that the film Pride and Prejudice causes my desire for reading this novel.

Jane Austen was born in Steventon, England, in 1775, where she lived for the first twenty-five years of her life. Her father, George Austen, was the rector of the local parish and taught her largely at home. She began to write while in her teens and completed the original manuscript of Pride and Prejudice, titled First Impression, between 1796 and 1797. To our surprise, she was never married and lived most of her life in a community much like the one we find in Pride and Prejudice. Pride and Prejudice was published in January 1813, two years after Sense and Sensibility, her first novel, and it achieved a popularity that has endured to this day. Austen published four more novels: Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. All of her six novels deal with “the business of getting married”, are comedies involving either solitary heroines or young women educated by events to cast aside their illusions.

The social milieu of Austen’s Regency England was particularly stratified, and class divisions were rooted in family connections and wealth. So, in her works, Austen is often critical of the assumptions and prejudices of upper class England. In that period, while social advancement for young men lay in the military, church, or law, the chief method of self-improvement for women was the acquisition of wealth. Women could only accomplish this goal through successful marriage. Though young women of Austen’s day had more freedom to choose their husbands than in the early eighteenth century, practical considerations continued to limit their options. Thus, Austen expressed her feelings and thoughts in her articles.

The novel describing love and marriage developed through the love between Elizabeth and Darcy. Essentially, it is the story of how they overcome all obstacles-----including their own personal failings-----to find romantic happiness. Besides, there are seven different marriages presented in the novel. Excluding the Gardiner and the Lucas, the remaining five marriages contrast each other to reveal

Jane’s opinions and thoughts on the subject of marriage. However, what I want to say is that the two couples: Elizabeth and Darcy, Charlotte Lucas and Mr. Collins, give me much feelings and thoughts indeed.

The novel’s protagonist, Elizabeth, who is the second daughter of Mr. Bennet, is the most intelligent and sensible of the five Bennet sisters. She is well read, quick-witted, lively and attractive, but with a tongue that occasionally proves too sharp for her own good as well as a tendency to judge on first impression and perhaps to be a little selective of the evidence upon which she based her judgments. Darcy, a wealthy gentleman, is the hero of this novel. Although he is intelligent and honest, his high birth and wealth make him overly proud and conscious of his social status. In addition, he always feels superior to the country people. So, in the course of Elizabeth’s nature, she has prejudice on him in the beginning and keeps misunderstanding on him under Wickham’s evil speaking, which leads them to be distant from each other. However, then the series of events they both experienced give them the opportunity to understand one another and the time to reconcile their feelings for each other. Finally, they walked out of the frog which was pride and prejudice. Their mutual understanding led them to a peaceful and lasting marriage. In the meanwhile, we can see the attitude the author shows reflects female pursue of independent personality and equality. I think Elizabeth has personality ethic which caused her independent idea about love and marriage and in consequence she earned a happy life. I also appreciate Elizabeth and Darcy having enough courage to realize their weakness and get rid of it.

Compared to Elizabeth and Darcy, I think the marriage between Mr. Collins and Charlotte is a tragedy. Their marriage totally depends on the position, money, and the background, rather than the love. Charlotte persuades herself to tolerate her husband’s strange and foolish behavior, and her only comfort is her big new house and rich material life, while Mr. Collins just needs a wife. Their marriage seems to be necessary but not happy. In my eyes, their marriage is just as a trade. It’s wretched to marry just for the property, position and background, because luxury material life

can’t deserve everything.

The other person I want to talk about is Mrs. Bennet. Mrs. Bennet is a miraculously tiresome character. She is noisy and foolish. Her only goal is to seek well-satisfied husbands for her daughters and seems to care for nothing else in the world. Ironically, her single-minded pursuit of this goal tends to backfire, as her lack of social graces and unbecoming behavior alienate the very people.

I believe a good book not only can bring you exciting, but also give you some further thinking. From the Pride and Prejudice, I learnt a lot. First, it’s stupid to judge a person by the first impression and always have prejudice on the person who you don’t like. In a word, we can’t judge a person without any further recognization or by other people’s words. Just like Elizabeth, under Wickham’s evil speaking she judges Darcy as a proud and hateful man and keeps misunderstanding on him. Other example, Mr. Binely persuades himself run away from falling in love with June for having heard Darcy’s word that June doesn’t like him, so that they almost missed each other. By the way, we can learn that pride sometimes will make you far away from others. Then, I couldn’t forget how eager Mrs. Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. Why is she so crazy about that? I know it’s because of money. First of all, I have to acknowledge that money is very important for our lives. With money, you can make your life more comfortable. However, Can money determine everything? How could a marriage maintain without love but just for money? Charlotte Lucas and Mr. Collins is a good sample. In modern society, there are many women choosing the men who can satisfy their material comforts to be their husbands. What a sad fact it is!

This novel is really worthy of being read. It gives me much precious fortune.
