A Book Review of Wolf Totem
Written by Jiang Rong in 2004, Wolf Totem has been one of the best sellers these years in China. It is a semi-autobiographical novel narrated by its main character Chen Zhen who is a young man from Beijing, recording his own experiences with shepherds and horseman on the Mongolia grassland. The writer uses beautiful words to describe the brilliant sceneries of the grassland and the Mongolia people’s life including the folk traditions, rituals and beliefs. The most attractive part is the description of the wisdom of Mongolia wolves. Through the vivid battles between human and wolves, the spirits of the wolves like solidarity, bravery, intelligence and the eager for freedom have been highlighted.
Being translated into more than thirty languages, this book also spreads beyond China. Being widespread, it has aroused some controversies. Some consider this book as an epic of wolves and the brave nomads on the grassland. In deep, it reveals the weaknesses of Chinese people and encourages bravery and the awareness of freedom. Meanwhile, there are some who regard it as a book of nationalism. One German sinologist described the book as “fascist” for its depiction and treatment of the farmers. Another critic points out that there is no certain totem in Mongolia people’s history and the writer’s descriptions are not the truth.
It’s quite normal to have different opinions on the same work. What have to be pointed out is that as a novel, Wolf Totem is quite successful for its special theme on wolves and the exciting plots. From another angle, its statements to the causes of the differences between farmers and nomads may not be in accordance with the
