We live in a materialistic world where advertisements infiltrate our lives including capturing the attention of young children. But, these powerful messages are subject to abuse and therefore need to be regulated particularly when targeting children.

Although adverts perform many useful functions, advertising agencies are sophisticated professionals who are in a position to take advantage of the less sophisticated. Immature minds are particularly susceptible to creative marketing as they cannot easily distinguish the truth nor understand that money is a scarce commodity. For example, in television commercials, toy companies invariably try their best to make their products look much better than they really are in order to maximize sales. Parents, on the other hand, have to put up with the constant demands for these commodities, balancing the child’s wants with their budget as well as trying not to spoil their offspring nor allowing them to become an economic pawn in a materialistic society. Governments need to ban adverts, displays and packaging that exploits the position of power producers have over our children and which often serve to pit parents against their young.

Many countries already have laws to regulate adverts to protect adults from the effects of advertising. Smoking and alcohol adverts are banned or strictly curbed by law to look after the well-being of mature members of society as they are considered persuasive enough, consciously or subconsciously, to sway their desire. Laws against disinformation adhere to advertising too. Not having rules to protect the more vulnerable members of our society seems out of step with the existing policies.

In conclusion, in many ways children can be preyed upon by advertising agencies, business and retailers, and it is beholden upon the government to halt this exploitation. Such legislation is already in place to save adults from harm and so why not children. Furthermore I agree that the media, advertisers and governments should work to regulate the industry so as not to take advantage of our na?ve younger generation.

It cannot be denied that parents in the modern society would bear much more responsibilities and burdens as well than those in the past, such as the financial pressure to support the family, due to the increasing desires of individuals and the economic reality in the present society. That means modern parents would spend plenty of time on earning money and have less time to be with their children or to actually teach them. However, the real situation regarding the child education is that parents in the present are more likely to emphasize the education of their children in various respects such as arranging a detailed study plan for their children.

Moreover, the emphasis children would receive about their education from their parents has increased significantly in the contemporary society because of the fact that individuals now have generally believed in the essential influence

of the education on people especially the younger generation. That significance can be realized by the modern parents during their working and social experiences, and to a great extent it can be comprehended due to the reality that well-educated persons are in demanded in relatively every area of the current society. Therefore, in order to help their children to become successful and qualified, parents presently have been inclined to check or help with their children's school projects, to have them acquire multiple skills and to expect them to receive the best education at a higher level, which would not be the focus of the parents in the past who even did not care about the educational situation of their children and merely held the expectation that children could help to support the family in terms of finance as soon as possible.

Furthermore, it has been proposed that current parents have been more active during the process of making decisions related to their children's educational choices than in the past. That could suggest that to some extent, they would

like to exert influence on the children and their educational affairs rather than be willing to let their children to have independent decision-making as they did in the past, which might be due to the possibility that present parents might place more emphasis on their children’s education and not want them to make any mistakes. However, this situation can probably be interpreted that the modern parents can are considered to be better educated people themselves and can assist their children to choose wisely and appropriately by offering the relevant information and reasonable advice in the course of educational matters, such as how to plan their time, what major they should study and whether they should have a gap year before entering university.

In conclusion, although modern parents might have less time with their children than those in the past during their educational period, they definitely can be regarded as more active in the participation in their children's educational activities in terms of the attention they pay and the positive effort they provide to help their children to make educational decisions due to the fact that they perceive the importance of acquiring education.
