Prolific American short-story writer, a master of surprise endings, who wrote about the life of ordinary people in New York City. Typical for O. Henry's stories is a twist of plot which turns on an ironic or coincidental circumstance. Although some critics were not so enthusiastic about his work, the public loved it. O. Henry was born William Sydney Porter in Greenboro, North Carolina.

【摘 要】 The Last Leaf 赏析

The Novel "The Last Leaf" is about a young girl decides that she will die when the last leaf drops from a dying vine outside her window, as lingering pneumonia slowly takes her will to live. Her neighbor, Art Carney, is an elderly artist frustrated by his inability to paint what is in his heart. In an attempt to save the young girl, he creates the masterpiece he has been struggling to paint. A beautifully shot and moving story. This excellent short novel is my favorite story. Art Carney does a great job, although his character is French in this version, as opposed to the German character in the book. and just like the book,it truly touched the heart of its reader.

篇四 :The_last_leaf_句法分析

(It is a sin to want to die.)”,而那最后一片常青藤叶却赋予了老艺术家Behrman的生命更深层次的含义,成了Behrman用生命换来的惊世之作(masterpiece),从而使“热爱生命”的主题得到了深华,令O. Henry的The Last Leaf成了不朽的名篇。

Behrman in The Last Leaf

When a dying lady was looking out the ivy vine1 through the window, whose leaves were falling , she desperately thought “if the last falls, I must go”2. The old painter sacrificed his life to paint a green ivy leaf onto the brick wall ,when the real last fell .One died and one lived. No one could deny that piece of ivy leaf saved everything about love, nobility and greatness. The old man was just Behrman in O.Henry’s novel The Last Leaf.

In O.Henry’s eyes, Behrman was a failure in art3but we might say he was a success in humanity. Actually he ever set his mind to accomplish a surprising masterpiece and even prepared to be proud of it; Well , his masterpiece did not appear until the death approached .Otherwise, he lived by being a model for some poor painters like him and drunk all day along. That’s the first impression which Behrman gave us at the middle part of the novel.

Johnsy has fallen ill and is dying of pneumonia. She watches the leaves falling from the window of her room, and decides that when the last leaf drops, she will die, too. To encourage her, Mr. Behrman painted the last leaf in a stormy night but he died of pneumonia because of his efforts in the storm.

This is a sad story about sacrifice as well as a moving story

about hope. Likewise, we can learn about something from this story, something that totally different from each other.

篇七 :读后感 the last question

Probably the single most brilliant piece of short fiction I have had the pleasure of reading. And the most influential story in my post existentialist/depression life.

I stumbled upon this story around five years ago. It was part of a compilation of short stories in the book we used for our literature 1 in school. I still remember the first time I read it.

The shock, the reaction, the sadfaksdnasd when I had finished reading it is still fresh in my mind.

Actually I remembered the story but not the tittle, and in the ensuing years I had regaled it to countless friends and acquaintances, retelling it with gusto. But not actually knowing the title.

Then last year I posted what I remembered of the story in yahoo answers, and in a heartbeat someone replied: “The Last Question by Isaac Asimov”. Off I was searching the net looking for a copy of it.

The Last Leaf

Sue

Johnsy

Doctor

Old Behrman

Scene Ⅰ

Aside:

In a little district west of Washington Square the streets have run crazy and broken themselves into small strips called "places." These "places" make strange angles and curves.

One day,an artist once discovered a valuable possibility in this street. So, to quaint old Greenwich Village the art people soon came prowling. ( Sue and Johnsy meet at the restaurant of an Eighth Street...)

S: Hey,I find our tastes in art, food and clothes so congenial.Maybe we can have a joint studio.

J: Oh,that’s great. We’d better look for a studio with north windows, Dutch attics and low rents.

S: It couldn’t be better. Then we can import some pewter mugs and a chafing dish or two from Sixth Avenue.

J: It sounds exciting.Let’s take action right away.
