6. International coordinators of foreign universities are kindly asked to collect the application documents of their students and review them before sending them in a single package with a cover letter signed by the coordinators themselves (the cover letter should list the names of the students). V. Proficiency in English or Korean (英语或韩语能力要求)

VI. KU HANDBOOK (建国大学师生手册)

Even if you learn Korean here at Konkuk, your Korean proficiency will not improve drastically enough for you to understand classes taught in Korean. You are to attend either classes taught in English, or those taught in Korean, if you speak Korean as fluently as native Koreans do. Therefore, before you come to Konkuk, you must have a decent command of English or Korean. Otherwise, you will go through extreme difficulty here at Konkuk. Meanwhile, all the important notices and instructions – oral and written – from the OIA before and throughout your study at Konkuk will be given in English only. 外国人交换学生来建国大学之前和在建国大学学习期间国际处所有通知及公告事项全部用英语告示。 Exchange students are not Korean language trainees. Korean language training should not be the top priority of exchange students – it is something they learn additionally.

KU HANDBOOK 2010 (Sixth Edition) contains info about daily life at Konkuk University. It explains about campus facilities, the dormitory, how to sign up for classes, and more. Please be sure to read the handbook before you fill out any forms and while you prepare to leave for Konkuk. The OIA of Konkuk University will not be held accountable for any trouble resulting from your failure to read the handbook and instructions included therein. If there are any differences between what you read in these guidelines and what you read in the KU HANDBOOK 2010, please go with the guidelines, until the next edition of the handbook becomes available.

The next edition, KU HANDBOOK 2011 (Seventh Edition), will be disseminated via e-mail as soon as it is published – sometime in mid February 2011. In the new edition, roughly everything will remain the same as the Sixth Edition, except for some figures and dates.

VII. Those Who Are Seniors at Home Univ. (原所属大学4年级学生须知)

It is a bad idea for foreign exchange students to spend their graduation semester (last semester before graduation from their home universities) here at Konkuk, because; - They have to leave Konkuk in the middle of their study to attend to personal matters (graduation theses etc.) back home, stay there for several weeks and return to Konkuk. - Here at Konkuk, they attend no classes whatsoever, and focus on their personal activities on and off campus. This is because before coming to Konkuk, they usually obtained all the credits they need to graduate from their home universities.

This is not advisable not only form an academic standpoint, but also from the visa and immigration standpoint. Please make sure that you spend your graduation semester at your home university – not here at Konkuk. If you have only one semester left before graduating from your home university, please think twice about joining the exchange student program. VIII. Those Who Are Graduate Students at Home Univ.(原所属大学研究生须知)

Those who are graduate students at their home universities should study at the graduate level here at Konkuk as exchange students. Likewise, those who are undergraduate students at home should study at the undergraduate level here at Konkuk as exchange students. For more information on the exchange students admissions at the graduate level, please directly contact Ms. Kim Kyeong Min at kmkim@konkuk.ac. kr of the Graduate School Office.

Yet at this point, it can be difficult for some foreign graduate students to study at the

graduate schools of Konkuk as exchange students, due to the internal situation of the graduate schools of Konkuk (for example, the lack of classes taught in English etc.)

Foreign graduate students may study at the undergraduate level at Konkuk as exchange students – provided that their home universities officially approve of this academic

arrangement (for example, recognition [transfer] of the credits the students obtain at Konkuk), and the students agree. While studying (belonging to) at the undergraduate level of Konkuk, they can attend undergraduate classes only – not graduate classes. IX. Certificate of Admission (入学许可书)

Submitted application documents will be screened by the OIA (Submission does not automatically mean admission, however.). Upon screening the application documents, the OIA will issue original certificates of admission for qualified students, and send the certificates to international coordinators of their home universities – sometime in early January 2011, in the fastest means of delivery, such as DHL, FedEx, UPS, and EMS. X. Visa (签证)

Upon obtaining your certificate of admission from your international coordinator, you must visit - at the earliest date possible - the nearest Korean consulate with the certificate of admission and other documents required by the consulate to obtain a student visa (a D-2-F visa, which is for foreign exchange students).

The business registration number of Konkuk University is 207-82-00062. You might need this number to apply for a visa. Please note that when it comes to the issuance of visas, Konkuk University cannot make a 100%-guarantee.

For more details on visa matters, see pp. 22~23 in the KU HANDBOOK.

5

XI. Timetable (Academic Schedule etc.)(学期中日程安排等)

The details of the Academic Schedule 2011~2012 are not finalized yet. . The details of the Academic Schedule 2011~2012 will be e-mailed to you as soon as they become finalized. Until then, please see p. 10 and p. 62 in the KU HANDBOOK for a rough idea of the Academic Schedule 2011~2012.

The official arrival [airport pickup, dormitory check-in] dates designated by the OIA are not finalized yet, but the official arrival dates will be sometime in the third week of February. The mandatory orientation for new foreign exchange students will be held right after the official arrival dates.

XII. Arrival in South Korea (入境)

Upon obtaining the visa, you must reserve a plane ticket to fly to South Korea. Due to the high prices of a plane ticket and other reasons, you might be desperate to buy a plane ticket as early as possible. Yet it is not a good idea to buy a plane ticket until you receive the finalized schedule (timetable) containing the official arrival dates designated by the OIA, and until you obtain a visa (as there is no 100%-guarantee that a visa will be issued, although foreign exchange students are rarely denied a visa.).

If you will live in the dorm, you must arrive at the airport between 09:00 am ~ 16:00 pm on the official arrival dates designated by the OIA, to be picked up at the airport. You are strongly advised to be picked up by Konkuk students at the airport. You will be picked up at Incheon International Airport by Konkuk students, and escorted to the dormitory for check-in. The official arrival (airport pickup) dates designated by the OIA are the dorm check-in dates set by the dorm (check-in is not allowed before and after these dates.).

Of course, if you have friends or relatives living in South Korea, you can choose to arrive in the country before the official arrival dates designated by the OIA. More details (the official arrival [airport pickup, dorm check-in] dates etc.) will be sent to you later via e-mail.

If you will live off campus, you do not have to arrive at the airport on the dates

designated by the OIA. Of course, if you want airport pickup, you can.

As you will not live in the dorm, you can arrive in South Korea any time after you obtained a student visa. I suggest that you arrive in the country as early as you can, so that you can have more time to look for housing off campus. But you have to arrive in the country in time to attend the mandatory orientation for new foreign exchange students. XIII. Insurance (保险)

Foreign exchange students are required to purchase overseas health insurance before they arrive in South Korea. Be sure to check your insurance policies carefully for coverage in South Korea. Make sure that your insurance policies cover the entire period of your study here at Konkuk – from the moment you step on the plane leaving for South Korea to the moment you step back on the soil of your home country after the end of your study. 6

While at this point the official arrival dates are not finalized yet, please make sure that your insurance period starts from 14 February 2011 (or earlier, if you arrive in South Korea earlier) and ends on the last date of June 2011 (if you will leave the country right after your final exams) or the last date of July (August) 2011 (if you will leave the country after spending some time personally in the country). In any case, please make sure that your insurance period is long enough, and there are no missing (uninsured) days.

If extraordinary circumstances prevent you from buying overseas insurance before leaving your home country, you can buy one after arrival at Konkuk – during the orientation. But this is undesirable, as you will be uninsured from the moment you step on the plane leaving for South Korea to the moment you actually pay for insurance after arrival at Konkuk.

During this short uninsured period, anything can happen, and if you get sick and treated at a hospital during this period, you will not be reimbursed for the money you pay for this treatment even if you buy insurance later.

Of course, even after you purchased overseas insurance before you left your home country, you can buy another one after your arrival at Konkuk – during the orientation.

Fore more details on insurance, see pp. 52~54 in the KU HANDBOOK.

XIV. Orientation(入学教育)

The OIA will hold an orientation for new foreign exchange students. This orientation is mandatory for all new foreign exchange students. The exact date, time, and location of the orientation will be notified to you via e-mail in due course before you arrive in South Korea. Everything you need to know about life at Konkuk will be explained during the orientation. For more details on the orientation, please see p. 62 in the KU HANDBOOK.

XV. Dormitory (宿舍)

Before you apply for a dormitory room, keep in mind the following facts.

- Only double rooms are provided to foreign exchange students.

- Male students and female students live in separate buildings.

- No cooking is allowed in a dorm room.

- Buying a meal plan is mandatory (whether you actually eat meals or not).

- The typical foods served at the dorm are Korean foods, and usually contain pork.

- If you are a Muslim or a vegetarian, or have any dietary restrictions, do not apply for a dorm room.

Meanwhile, the KU HANDBOOK only indicates the check-in (out) schedule and rates (rent, deposit and meal fee) for 2010. The dorm check-in dates for foreign exchange students will be separately designated by the dorm (check-in is not allowed before and after these dates.). These dates will be arrival (airport pickup) dates. They will be sent to you via e-mail in due course after they become finalized. The rates will be slightly increased in 2011. For more details on the dorm, please see pp. 88~90 in the KU HANDBOOK, and read the Housing Application From that will be sent to you later on via e-mail.

7

XVI. Majors at Konkuk (建国大学的院系与专业)

In the “Intended Major at Konkuk” box on the Exchange Student Program Application Form, please indicate the Konkuk major that is closest to your major at your home university. For more details, see pp. 15~17 and 62 in the KU HANDBOOK. XVII. Classes Conducted in Foreign Languages (外语课程)

XVIII. Regular Korean Language Class (韩国语正规课程) A large number of classes are conducted in English here at Konkuk, while a small number of classes are conducted in Chinese by Chinese professors – exclusively for Chinese exchange students as well (See the attachments for the lists for the Spring Semester 2010.). The classes that will be taught in English for the Spring Semester 2011 will be quite similar to (not 100% same as) those taught in English during the Spring Semester 2010. Yet the lists for the Spring Semester 2010 are for reference only – to give you a rough picture of the English classes for the Spring Semester 2011. Just because certain courses were included in the lists for the Spring Semester 2010, does not necessarily mean they will be included in the lists for the Spring Semester 2011 as well. These lists will be revised for the Spring Semester 2011. The revised versions will be sent to you via e-mail before your arrival at Konkuk – sometime in mid February 2010. As regards the classes taught in Chinese by Chinese professors exclusively for Chinese exchange students, it is uncertain at this point whether these Chinese classes will be offered in the Spring Semester 2011 too. For more details on classes, see pp. 63~65 in the KU HANDBOOK.

XIX. Those Who Major in Korean (韩国语专业学生) There is a regular Korean language class for foreign exchange students. For more details on this class, find attached the “Regular Korean Language Class for Foreign Exchange Students (Fall Semester 2010),” and “Regular Korean language class (on-campus)” on p. 64 in the KU HANDBOOK. Please note that the class details such as the number of subclasses and class time will be revised for the Spring Semester 2011, but the basic framework will remain the same.

If you major in the Korean language at your home university, see p. 64 in the KU HANDBOOK.

XX. Expenses (费用)

Exchange students pay the tuition of their home universities, while they do not pay the tuition of their host universities – that is, Konkuk University.

Here at Konkuk, they have to pay dormitory expenses (rent, deposit and meal fee), class textbooks and other living expenses. The amount of the living expenses depends on the lifestyle of exchange students. XXI. Rules of Konkuk University (建国大学规则)

Foreign exchange students of Konkuk should follow the rules and regulations of Konkuk University, as well as the instructions – oral and written – from its faculty and staff members – before and throughout their study at Konkuk.

8

XXII. Website of Konkuk University (建国大学网站)

Please note that the information contained in the current website of Konkuk University (www.konkuk.ac.kr) is not fully updated. The best source of up-to-date info for now is these guidelines, the KU HANDBOOK and the info which the OIA sends you via e-mail. XXIII. Others(其他注意事项)

Last but not least, please check your e-mail everyday, as Mr. SUH at the OIA will continue to send you necessary information until the day you get on the plane leaving for South Korea. The OIA will contact you at the e-mail address you indicated on the Exchange Student Program Application Form.

Meanwhile, please do not buy a plane ticket until you receive the finalized future timetable (official arrival dates etc.) and your certificate of admission from the OIA, and until you receive an exchange student visa.

If you do not have a valid passport now, please apply for one immediately. If your passport expired, please apply for a new one immediately.

如果你没有护照的话, 马上申请!护照的有效期已过的话, 马上申请新的护照! If there is any change in the content of your application (including your e-mail address) or have any questions, please notify Mr. SUH immediately at muscle@konkuk.ac.kr 9
