If the father follows the advice,it is reasonable to assume that he will soon realize his son is making satisfactory progress in math and at the same time, enjoying the work.
Too often, however, teachers’ conferences with parents are devoted to unimportant accounts of children’ s wrongdoing, complaints about laziness and poor work habits, and suggestions for punishments and rewards at home.
What is needed is a more creative approach in which the teacher,as a professional advisor, plants ideas in parents’minds for the best use of the many hours that the child spends out of the classroom. In this way,the school and the home join forces in fostering the fullest development of youngsters’competence.

I remember that I used to rebel(反抗)against many dos and don’ts my parents told me. For example, when I kept on listening to jazz on the record player, my father used to consider it noise and replace it with classical music, which I always felt dull. My mom and dad were also very particular about the friends I made with, and always quoted the well-known sentence—one rotten apple could ruin a whole barrel of apples. These wre just a few examples of the things I thought my parents were unreasonable about.
Today, however, I am the father of a boy of 15, and I find that I am pressuring my son with a lot of rules and regulations that he seems to find hard to follow too. One day, I noticed that my son’s hair was too long, so I told him to go to the barber’s and get it cut short. Ordinarily, he will do what he is told to, but this time he put his foot down. “What’s wrong with my long hair?” he said. “Most of my friends have long hair. And besides, it’s my own hair, isn’t it? I don’t think you have the right to order me to cut it short, even if you’re my father!”
When I was a boy, if I had spoken to my father in that way, he would have taught me a lesson. But I suddenly realize that we are now living in a more liberal world, and my son’s insistence on wearing his hair long is merely an instance of the generation gap that exists between us. Finally, I agree to it, so he still wears his hair long.
