Good morning，Ladies and gentlemen！It's my honor to give this speech on the topic of "seeing is not believing".

There's a saying goes, seeing is believing. Many of us also firmly hold this belief in almost all aspects of our lives. However, is seeing really believing?

On Television, we saw politicians from different parties argue fiercely with each other. Hilarious dramas such as throwing shoes are put on the stage as often as we brush our teeth. While they might arrange their ties and go out for dinner hand in hand as old friends after the campaign speech. On books and pictures, we saw Africans, with chocolate skin and a head of kinky hair impossibly for ponytails, suffer from AIDS and poverty all the time. But, we subjectively neglect the fact that most of them actually live the normal lives as us.

The world is not a plain sheet. It's multi-dimensioned. What we see with our own eyes is just one aspect of it. The problem isn't that they are untrue, but they are incomplete. When the one story becomes the only story, seeing is not believing. On the contrary, it twists the truth.

One year ago, when I was browsing some articles in a magazine, an article entitled "My bloodcurdling night in Paris" immediately grasped my eyes. I read that with crowds of curiosities, but more confusions. The author narrates her experience that she gets a midnight call from the hotel lobby. Considering that it's such a well-known hotel in this fascinating city which is famous for its romance, she thinks nothing dangerous could happen. So she walks down the lobby, only to find nobody there. Turning around, she is already under someone’s gun. What happens that night is a

soul-stirring escape with her life. You know, I was startled at that moment. How could it possible happen? It's in Paris! How could these violent, dark and bloody crimes happen in this romance city? With great doubt of this article, I search a lot of information online. It's true. There does exist gangdoms in Pairs which they are particularly rampant in some blocks.

Clearing my mind, I realized that what appalled me is not the gangdoms' cruel crimes, but the contradiction between the Paris from what I saw before and some facts totally contrary. Seeing plentiful romance love stories and charming sceneries, we take it for granted that Paris is a perfect city without any flaws. Obviously, it's wrong! See? When you only believe what you see and smugly sure that it's supposed to be the fact, sorry, it's not!

The most vital things for us to do is to cancel the belief that what you see is the truth, because it's incomplete. What if I can know more about the history and social

condition of this city itself? What if I hold an open mind to realize what I see is just a narrow field of vision? What if I can understand the principle that the truth is not that simple as I see superficially without any other things? Then the shock won't hit me. Seeing is not believing, do not make the one you see becomes the only one! Thank you for your listening.

Seeing is not believing

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

As the old Chinese saying goes,” What you hear about may be false, but what you see is true.”We often easily believe in what we see without a shadow of doubt, but as a matter of fact, it is not always so convincing.

Most of you must have the experience that the more distant an object is, the smaller it looks like. The size of it in our eyes seems to be changeable, but nothing really changes. If you put a chopstick into the water, it looks as if it is broken. If you walk in the desert for a long time, you may witness the mirage of the oasis. You can intuitively see these phenomena with the awareness that they are not real. That is to say, you are likely to be taken in by your own eyes and what you see.

What we see at first sight may not be true, since the truth can be covered up. A criminal can arrange the crime scene to make the murder look like a suicide. An entrepreneur can create the false prosperity of the market to conceal the potential economic crisis. Even an ordinary person can draw support from the technology of Photoshop to hide his original appearance. Therefore, it is not enough to merely scratch the visible surface and the most crucial step is to expose the essence. For example, the apple falling onto the ground is the surface, while the gravity is the essence; the bubbles shining in the sun is the surface, while the refraction of the sunshine is the essence. And the connection between the surface and the essence is what we should search for from mere seeing.

From my perspective, what we personally see does exist, but it’s just a kind of unpersuasive reality. People often jump to conclusion on the basis of what they have seen at a time, which can incur mistakes or regrets. If humans can figure out everything with eyes, where does the brain stand? Even if we cannot always get the essence, it is still a rational choice to think, thoroughly and critically. Only in this way can we acquire valuable information and draw reasonable conclusion.

So ladies and gentlemen, always remember that what is essential may be invisible, so it is necessary to see through the surface and discover the true essence. As individuals, we must have our own penetrating judgment. After all, seeing is not always believing.
