Russia joined WTO after the eighteen years’ process GENEVA ,Dec.16(UPI)—According to the BBC, Russia officially joined World Trade Organization(WTO) after the eighteen years’ process at the eighth ministerial conference which was held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Russian Federation was the biggest economic entity which did not joined WTO. However, Russia’s former president had sent the application about allowing Russia to join WTO in 1996.That is such a long period of time until other countries agree on its application at last. The main problem which made Russia suffer from not being a member of WTO was that Georgia was against Russian’s request to a great extent. The reason for it was that the two countries hostiled because of the war in 2008.It made the political situation between two countries worse and worse. As a result, every of the 153 members agreed Russia to join WTO except Georgia. How to deal with this difficult problem became extremely hard.

On October 31st, Switzerland and Georgia came to talk about whether let Russia be a member of World Trade Organization or not. In addition, they also discussed something else on negotiations. Due to the huge efforts that Switzerland made and thanks to Georgia’s acceptance, Georgia and Russia signed a treaty, which

got rid of the most difficult impediment for Russia to join WTO. ‘Russia has already indicated that it might be willing to contribute up to 10 billion euros to the EFSF (European Financial Stability Facility),’ he said. ‘This is the basis on which I believe there will be further, more concrete discussion tonight and tomorrow.’

‘Russian WTO accession is a major achievement opening new opportunities for trade and the development of bilateral relations,’ said European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. ‘It should also give new momentum to the negotiations on a new and comprehensive EU-Russia Agreement.’
