Death, Be Not Proud

Death, be not proud though some have called thee

Mighty and dreadful for thou art not so

For those whom thou think thou dost overthrow

Die not, poor Death ,nor yet canst thou kill me.

From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,

Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,

And soonest our best men with thee do go,

Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.

Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,

And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,

And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well

And better than thy stroke; why swell donne's poems s thou then?

One sort sleep past, we wake eternally And death shall be no more; Death, thou should die

We know that the figure of speech play an important role in the rhetoric, it is means that deviating from general and main meaning of a word. For a word troop, the text will be more vividly if he using the figure of speech properly. For English learner, he should not only understand the knowledge, but also remember the spell of the professional language. In《Death, Be Not Proud》I well introduce something about Metaphor、hyperbole, to explore the rhetoric of beauty，at last ,I gives a simple conclusion to the rhetoric class.

John Dunn (John Dunn, 1572 ~ 1631),who is the seventeenth century

English metaphysical poets, who is special praised highly by T ? S elliott ,he liveslong time ago and he is a exotic poet.he Had travelled in Europe. The court was also in natural and unrestrained, a promised gentleman. In 1598, he was appointed as the most important secretary on the court Elizabeth. His political career seems to be a piece of light. Dein was also able to flatter the dignitaries. But in 1601, his life experienced a major turning point. He married with a 17 year old girl secretly.which ruined his good political career.

Donne's poetry has not only high aesthetic feeling, strong reason, but has an amazing personal tendency. Useing the complex or stough direct simile, donne usually put feel and rational into one place, and our taste seemed to accept his methods. In his writing, the worst works, his simile also express the idea of genius, and which makes dr. Johnson was angry, and in his writing, the best works, the simile and his thought seemd to close 2 for one completely .

We can roughly put donne's poems as ko's (El Greco) oil paintings. ko's (El Greco) oil paintings is Gregory twisted line, but donne's poems grace of distortion is language. He does not desire to try, but to achieve precise effect, in order to emphasize content, strengthen the feeling and their poems, in addition, having no anther way. donne's YunJiao is not enough tidy, appearing coarse, so poemer's reflect was rough and was not tied together. painting we will feel the pain of the mind and nervous, the same mood can experience in the poems donne. His devotion is not calm, but is covered by anxiety, confused, contradictions, seems to predict this age in which filled with sorrow atmosphere.

This poem revealed after the death of his faith in life. The author put the death compared as a rest or sleep.in the poem; Die not, poor Death ,nor yet canst thou kill me. From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,’Death is just a brief, but after the death of happiness is eternal. But this kind of religious thoughts to express the author for "death" dialogue, this poem expresses the author's thought to argue the public's view in death "great and terrible"

Metaphor is "terms". That is caught two different nature of the things similar point, Writer use death as a rest or sleep. use a metaphor of things to other things. The structure of the parable general by body (compared things), the analogized body (for example things) and parables word (parable of the

relationship between sign) constitutes. The mainly function of metaphor are : the insipid for vivid; The esoteric for plain; The abstract for specific; The lengthy for concise. The writer use matephor to Make us better understand about death

In the middle of the poem, the writer said “Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men, And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,” As we all known, poison, war, and sickness is thing, but the poem put them with dost together. It makes the poem vivid and rich. In the end of the poem, the said “One sort sleep past, we wake eternally, And death shall be no more; Death, thou should die” the writer said “One sort sleep past, we wake eternally” Here, the writer uses the rhetoric of hyperbole, which make the reader expression than practical about higher, more intense.

. To conclusion, I remember these word using associating mode , it is main about using partial tone between English and Chinese. I find it is a powerful way to help us understand and remember these words. I pass the writing exam by use this method that all created by myself. So I write down then share with my classmates. All in all, I leaned a lot from rhetoric class including knowledge and ideation.
