The Old Man and the Sea
The passage mainly tells an old man called Santiago who makes a living through fishing. He experienced a lot of difficult things and suffered a lot of pains. With the loss of time, he was left many traces on his body. He had gone 84 days without taking a fish, and he was very lonely. However, he never gave up. Finally, he made a fierce fight with the shark, but he got nothing except the bone of the shark.
When I read this passage again, I have more feelings about it. Now I know more about the features of the character. As we know, in this passage, the author creates a pattern of Code Hero. Everything about Santiago was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated. Maybe, in some people’s eyes, failure and bad luck were permanent, but in Santiago’s opinion, failure and bad luck don’t have much effect on him, because he thought that he would get good luck and he would catch a “real fish” through his rich experience and skill. In this passage, Santiago said: “I may not be as strong as I think, but I know many tricks and I have resolutions”. He was always confident of himself and never lost the hope. Because of his strong will and spirit, he became the perfect explanation of the Code Hero.
He was simple, poor, but not shabby; he was modest, but not downtrodden. He was capable of the decency, dignity, and even heroism.
I think, Hemingway shows the deep understanding and of humanity and a deep faith through Santiago. In fact, it is the most important to keep a person's dignity, no matter how difficult and hard the situation is, or no matter how high or low the position is. What's more, the dignity is essential to real life.
Santiago was calm and had few words. He said a little, but these words were full of power, which makes people shocked and encouraged. In this passage, a little boy companied with Santiago, and he regarded Santiago as a hero and his idol. Besides, he treated Santiago very well and often helped him. However, the boy's parents prevented him staying with Santiago, just because Santiago' bad luck, but the little boy didn't do this, and he still chose to accompany and learn from the senior fisherman. Though Santiago liked the little boy very much, he only said lightly:" Thank you, you make me happy."
Some people said that Santiago ended up with failure, because he got nothing except the fish bone at the end, though he got through the fierce fight. However, in some people’s eyes, Santiago was successful, because he showed a kind of spirit that makes people excited and encouraged. In fact, Santiago got tired, but he also got more experience and skill from this catching fish. In real life, we need a kind of spirit to achieve our goals and dreams. In my opinion, he was both successful and failed. He was successful, because he did everything carefully and
positively, and he always kept strong will and he never gave up. He was failed because he only shared the process, while he didn’t care about the result so that he got nothing finally. However, in real life, no matter what our work is, we need to the good result to prove our ability. If we only care about the process of work, not the results, perhaps we cannot get others’ admission. Nowadays, many companies just care about the results, not the process. So, in the future, when we work, we should keep strong will and never give up. Of course, we should share the process, and do everything positively and carefully.
In this passage, Santiago had a complicated feeling to these fishes. He respected and loved them very much, because he regarded them as his brothers and he made a living by them, while he had to kill them, because he wanted to survive. In the passage, Santiago wanted to beat these sharks, the sea, and he also wanted to face himself. When we met difficulty and trouble, maybe we would choose give up, so we should keep a strong will to finish our work. If a person doesn’t have a strong will, he or she never succeeds. Now, many people lack courage and spirit to pursue dreams and happiness, because they fear to face troubles.
Generally speaking, Santiago was an old man, but he was an admirable person, because we can learn a lot of spirit from him. When he got nothing except the bone, he didn’t feel disappointed, because he believed that he would catch fishes on some day. No matter how difficult
the thing was, he never gave up. He always kept clam heart to solve these problems. In a word, a man can be destroyed but not defeated. We cannot be defeated by any difficulty.
