I. Introduction
Rule Jules Verne (1828 ~ 1905) was born in the western French port of Nantes, who is a famous writer in 19th century. He produced a large number of outstanding literary works, and he’s known as the “father of modern science fiction”. After completing his studies at the Nantes lycée, he went to Paris to study law. He early became interested in the theater and wrote librettos for operettas. For some years his concerns alternated between business and the theater, but after 1863 he drew upon his interest in science and geography to write a series of romances of extraordinary journeys in which he anticipated.
Verne is especially known to English readers in translations of his Five Weeks in a Balloon (1863), A Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), From the Earth to the Moon (1865), Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea (1870), Around the World in Eighty Days (1873), The Mysterious Island (1875), and Michael Strogoff (1876). He wrote more than 50 books by the time he died. Plays and motion pictures have been made from many of his works, which are still widely read, particularly by the young.
II. The Story or A Summary of the Book
At the year of 1872 in London, a gentleman called Fogg says he can travel around the world in eighty days when he is chatting with his friends at the club, and he makes a twenty thousand pound bet with them. With his servant Passepartout, Mr. Fogg takes a balloon ship to the south of France hurriedly, and wants to get on the train. After seeing the train is too packed to leave, he decides to take a balloon ship to Spain. Luckily, they come across bullfights. So they prefer to feast their eyes rather than leave.
They are targeted by the metropolitan police agent when they go to Switzerland. After Fogg leaves London soon, there is a bank robbery case happened. Mr. Fogg and Passepartout are suspected, so the detective traces all the way over. Mr. Fogg and his servant have to flee to India. They save the princess called Aouda by chance, and then three people become companions. They sail across the Atlantic to San Francisco, and then across the North American continent, finally arrive in New York City. However, they are late for the ship to go to British. There are only a few days before the deadline, so Mr. Fogg purchases an airship, crossing the choppy Atlantic, and landing on Britain. However, the police have waited them for a long time and they are put into jails.
The deadline is coming. Luckily, the real bank robbers are arrested, proving the innocence of Fogg. The princess falls in love with Fogg’s brave and resourcefulness, they are ready to get married. Just the day before the wedding, but also on the last day of 80 days, Mr. Fogg comes to the club; his friends are all very surprised. Finally, Fogg wins the bet, and marries a beautiful wife. But the traveling expense is twenty thousand pounds and he doesn’t win any money.
III. Comments or My Views on the Book
I have thought a lot after reading this book. During the extreme short time that people can hardly think of, Mr. Fogg finishes traveling around the world, doing a lot of good deeds, and appreciating the local conditions and customs. During this time his servant has followed him faithfully. There is a detective who under the illusion that Fogg is a thief, so he follows Fogg around the earth. The whole story is gripping, and many miraculous turns happen during tough times, making the whole plot ups and downs.
No matter what happens, or happy, or lost, the protagonist of the book Fogg maintains a calm attitude. His servant has been described vividly; his joys and sorrows are all showed in the book. However, Mr. Fogg's spirit is worthy of our learning. No matter what happens, do not get too excited, everything has a solution. And the servant Passepartout’s practice tells us that no matter how urgent things happen, don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful scenery around, don't waste this trip.
The detective, who is always self-righteous, wronged a good man at the end, making his reputation no longer as good as before. However, he makes great effort to capture the "thief". And this kind of perseverance finally makes him travel around the world without being disciplined.
Not only these people, there are also many small roles throughout the story. During this trip, these roles are all very helpful to Mr. Fogg. Just because of these people’s help, Fogg can achieve the eighty - day tour around the earth.
Actually, what has touched me most is not only Mr. Fogg’s spirit of not afraid of difficulties, but also his good quality of willing to sacrifice everything for his companions. There is a plot in the book that when Mr. Fogg crosses the United States, he meets the Indians. And there is a battle between them. When at the end of the battle, Mr. Fogg realizes that his servant
Passepartout disappeared, and then he is in a hurry to look for him. When others urge him to go, Mr. Fogg regardless of his twenty thousand - pound bet, just says one sentence: it’s my duty.
When I see this plot, I am touched deeply by his good quality of willing to sacrifice everything for his companions. For his companions, Mr. Fogg is willing to abandon everything. How great he is! How selfless he is! It is really insignificant when I compare myself with him. Normally, I will always run in front of others if I see something interesting with regardless of other people's feelings. Not only that, when I do something wrong, I often desperately deny it until they catch the evidence. Recalling the past, it is really regretful. Mr. Fogg travels around the world in eighty days, but it’s quite impossible for me. He succeeds because of his perseverance. There are too many hard things for us to achieve in this world, but as long as you try, as long as you struggle, it is possible to achieve success. This is what Mr. Fogg has taught me. Exactly, through the long journey of our life, how can it have no crooked roads? But as long as you insist, struggle, it will become a smooth road when you look back.
In the world journey, it is not difficult to find that Mr. Fogg is wisdom. His strange ideas help him finish the trip. It also has taught me that no matter what to do, we should be down-to-earth, unremitting. Only when we have the tenacious perseverance and the ability of not afraid of difficulties can we achieve everything excellently.
