A Review of “A Tale of Two Cities”

“A Tale of Two Cities”, one of Dickens’ works, is a well-known long story. And it has a great influence on the society at that time. When I saw the title at first, I thought it might tell something about the developing process of two cities, which might be no fun. However, after reading it , I found I had been wrong.

It portrays a brutal, bloody and revengeful society as well as love and friendship.

It happened before and after the Revolution in France. The ruthless and cruel landowners and noblemen exploited the miserable people who owned nothing, but these poor people worked for others day and night. Noblemen had the power that one word would doubtlessly send others to prison. As time passed by, the noise of the coming-up revolution storm in Paris was growing louder and louder. At last, it was on the fourteeth of July, 1789 that the revolution borke out. “The Bastille and its officers were in the hands of people, and the people wanted revenge and blood.” The true Freedom of France came. “The Guillotine, the new machine of death, cut off the heads of many, many people—not only the powerful and the cruel, but also the beautiful, the innocent, and the good.” Among the good, there was a man called Darney. Even though his father, wife and friends knew he was innocent, the people thought he was the enemy and would go to the Guillotine.

In spite of a shadow of fear and hate here and there, we can also see the great and kind persons. I think the greatest person is Mr Manette who had been a prisoner in the Bastille for eighteen years. What he suffered was difficult to imagine, but he was still kind and loved his daughter. He did his best to save his son-in-law, whose father and uncle were the men that had ever sent him to prison. Another great man is the lawyer, Sydney Carton, a friend of Darney. Before Darney went to Guillotine, Mr Carton changed places with him and he said, “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever know.” Besides, the story is full of love, including the love between father and daughter, the love between husband and wife, the love among friends and so on. In short, only if you have love in your heart, the life is meaningful. At the same time, the revenge will run away with you, freedom

and happiness will be around you.

There is no doubt that Charles Dickens is one of the greatest writers in English. From this book, I see some true lives and moving stories from the old ages. I reckon you must feel the same as me that we don’t want to live in that condition. To be frank, we all look forward to living in a peaceful and love situation. Though the present life has improved a lot, there are still wars in some places. All that we need is to solve the problems in peaceful ways instead of by force. So let’s work hard together in order to make our life much more meaningful and happier, make our society more harmonious.

A Review of “Hamlet”

It is the proverb “1000 eyes of 1000 individual Hamlet” that attracted me to read Hamlet, the head of Shakespeare’s Four Tragedies. I couldn’t help thinking whether Hamlet is so special as to cause everyone to have different thoughts of him? Does he possess any fine qualities that can move us? With these questions, I open the book, and find myself entering an interwoven world of good and evil. What strikes me most are Hamlet’s courage displayed in his revenge, his integrity and the humanism in him, etc.

Revenge

Revenge is the clue of the whole play. The story began with a murder. The king of Denmark died mysteriously and his brother came to power. Hamlet, the son of the previous king, felt that his father’s death was very strange. Moreover, to his surprise, his beloved mother married his uncle

soon after his father’s death. After some investigation, a shocking result came to Hamlet that his father was murdered by his uncle. Out of anger, Hamlet began to revenge. In the course of his revenge, Hamlet appeared very calm, patient and courageous. To achieve his goal, he even and eventually succeeded in killing his enemy.

It’s hard to imagine what a tough revenge that must be! I don’t mean to show my support for this kind of revenge, but I dare say that the qualities Hamlet showed during the course such as patience, honesty, justice and courage worth learning. Just like Hamlet facing his enemy, I may also face with many challenges, problems or difficult situations in my life, I should cool down at first to analyze whether I have the ability to deal with them at the present time. If not, what I should do is just accumulating experience and knowledge, then I will do what I can to achieve my goal. Hamlet can wait for a few years in order to revenge, why can’t I wait for even shorter time to solve a problem?

Humanism

Humanism shines in every part of the book, especially in the image of Hamlet. “Courtier’s eyes, scholar’s tongue, soldier’s sword, flower filled with the country’s hope, mirror of the era, model of the human relations and the center of worldwide attention.” Ophelia’s this description exactly summed up the humanism in Hamlet. Hamlet desires equality and believes the kindness of humanity. For example, Hamlet gives equal weight to his servant and the courtiers and treats his servant as his friend. Meanwhile, as a practitioner of humanism, Hamlet is very kind. He is kind to everyone including his enemies.

The flash of humanity! One can give equal weight to his close friends, but how about strangers? One can be kind to someone he is familiar with, but how about others? In this play, Hamlet gives us the answer that everyone is born equal and should be treated kindly. It’s no wonder Hamlet has become such a remarkable image in literature. It is from Hamlet that I learn how to be a approachable person.

Love

Love is a permanent topic of literature. The roles shaped by Shakespeare always have complex characters, but they have one thing in common: they all know what love is and how to love. Hamlet is a typical representative.

Someone may say Hamlet is so indecisive that he misses many opportunities to revenge. But little to they know, he is afraid of hurting his mother because he loves her so deeply. I think it’s the most shining part of him and the most striking thing I admire. Hamlet can discard all just for his mother, why can’t I? From now on, I will try everything I can do to make up for what I owed my mother. I’d love to share her toil and sorrow. I’d love to see her laugh because it is the most beautiful in the world. I’m willing to devote my time to staying with her. Tiny though the things are, I still expect to show my pure love to my mother. In this sense, all I’ve decided to do are enough, completely enough.

Love is also displayed in the love affairs between Hamlet and Ophelia. They are both not accepted by the world because their behaviors are more than a little different from ones in tradition. However, they are against all the odds and get determinedly together. Their love is born to be a tragedy, but they don’t regret at all. It is enough as long as they have owned. This is what true love is.

Finishing reading this play, I involuntarily want to express my thanks to Shakespeare for writing this great play in which Humanism shines. I also want to thank Hamlet for his reminding me of the true meaning of love and setting a example for me. Many thanks also go to my dear mom, thank her for her unselfish and endless love!

A review of “ Jane Eyre”

This is a story about a special and unreserved woman who has been exposed to a hostile environment but continuously and fearlessly struggling for her ideal life. The story can be interpreted as a symbol of the independent spirit.

It seems to me that many readers’ English reading experience starts with Jane Eyer. I am of no exception. As we refer to the movie “Jane Eyer”, it is not surprising to find some differences because of its being filmized and retold in a new way, but the spirit of the novel remains----to be an independent person, both physically and mentally.

Jane Eyer was a born resister, whose parents went off when she was very young, and her aunt, the only relative she had, treated her as badly as a ragtag. Since Jane’s education in Lowwood Orphanage began, she didn’t get what she had been expecting——simply being regarded as a common person, just the same as any other girl around. The suffers from being humiliated and devastated teach Jane to be persevering and prize dignity over anything else.As a reward of

revolting the ruthless oppression, Jane got a chance to be a tutor in Thornfield Garden. There she made the acquaintance of lovely Adele and that garden’s owner, Rochester, a man with warm heart despite a cold face outside. Jane expected to change the life from then on, but fate had decided otherwise: After Jane and Rochester fell in love with each other and got down to get marry, she unfortunately came to know in fact Rochester had got a legal wife, who seemed to be the shadow following Rochester and led to his moodiness all the time ----Rochester was also a despairing person in need of salvation. Jane did want to give him a hand, however, she made up her mind to leave, because she didn’t want to betray her own principles, because she was Jane Eyer. The film has finally got a symbolist end: Jane inherited a large number of legacies and finally returned. After finding Rochester’s misfortune brought by his original mad wife, Jane chose to stay with him forever.

I don’t know what others feel, but frankly speaking, I would rather regard the section that Jane began her teaching job in Thornfield as the film’s end----especially when I heard Jane’s words “Never in my life have I been awaken so happily.” For one thing, this ideal and brand-new beginning of life was what Jane had been imagining for long as a suffering person; for another, this should be what the audiences with my views hoped her to get. But the professional judgment of producing films reminded me to wait for a totally different result: There must be something wrong coming with the excellence----perhaps not only should another section be added to enrich the story, but also we may see from the next transition of Jane’s life that “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you would get.” (By Forrest Gump’s mother, in the film “Forrest Gump”)

What’s more, this film didn’t end when Jane left Thornfield. For Jane Eyer herself, there should always be somewhere to realize her great ideal of being independent considering her

fortitude, but for Rochester, how he can get salvation? The film gives the answer tentatively: Jane eventually got back to Rochester. In fact, when Jane met Rochester for the first time, she scared his horse and made his heel strained, to a certain extent, which meant Rochester would get retrieval because of Jane. We can consider Rochester’s experiences as that of religion meaning. The fire by his frantic wife was the punishment for the cynicism early in his life. After it,

Rochester got the mercy of the God and the love of the woman whom he loved. Here we can say: human nature and divinity get united perfectly in order to let such a story accord with the

requirements of both two sides. The value of this film may be due to its efforts to explore a new way for the development of humanism under the faith of religion.

Life is ceaselessly changing, but our living principles remain. Firmly persisting for the rights of being independent gives us enough confidence and courage, which is like the beacon over the capriccioso sea of life. In the world of the film, we have found the stories of ourselves, which makes us so concerned about the fate of the dramatis personae.

In this era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, both physical and mental effects on us call for a balance. We are likely to find ourselves bogged down in the Sargasso Sea of information overload and living unconsciousness. It’s our spirit that makes the life meaningful.

Heart is the engine of body, brain is the resource of thought, and great films are the mirrors of life. Indubitably, “Jane Eyer” is one of them.

No Sleepwalking

Truth is more of a stranger than fiction ------Mark Twain

“Did you say the stars were worlds,Tess?”

“Yes.”

“All like ours.”

“They seem like our apples—most of them good, a few bad.”

“Which do we live on? A good one or a bad one.”

“A bad one.”

This is one of the most beautiful dialogue of Tess and her sister, which expresses everyone’s thought at that time in England and it also makes us think a lot about ourselves.

It was Thomas Hardly that wrote the book in 1891.Up to now, it has been the most classical novel that describes the thoughts and feelings of the girls. It’s a sad book: A young girl was destroyed little by little but it was really true. The person who destroyed her was not her enemy, but the people who claimed to love her, why? For her beauty?

Tess should have been happy. Her mouth was like a flower, and her eyes were large soft , sometimes black, blue or grey, sometimes all three colors together. In the novel, the suitable person hesitate while the unsuitable person destroyed her. We may can’t help shouting: “Don`t leave.” But it’s late. We feel unable, because of the society : the only criminal . I think all seemed to be in the dream until Tess’s father found out her family history. Her family was stuck in difficulty. In order to support her family,Tess started her new life: a sad dream.

The story happended one century ago. Everyone in that time took it for granted. As time passes by, it’s reappearing today .Watching the rapidly-changing world, we can’t escape from the reality . The only thing we can do is to equip ourselves with sel-respect and confidence. Beautiful Tess’ escaping from sadness caused more sadness, but it wasn’t her mistakes. It was just a bad dream. For us, being chearheaded all the time can help us avoid a great number of bad things. Get

a grip and don`t let anger get the best of you. “I am ready”, the last word Tess left us, has been waiting for us to wake. Compared with old days, the society now is more complicated, we seem to sleepwalk: we are dreaming.

When you fish for love, bait with your heart, not you brain. We should be our own masters and try our best to do everything perfectly by heart not by brain. Because of heart, our world

becomes loving. Because of brain, there is more sadness in the world. As we all know, the heart is the most beautiful thing in the world, which requires us to develop in daily life. Broken wings, flying heart. Tess’ disturbed world led to her madness and let her lose love. For us, what we should do is to forget sadness and regard every day as a new start.

Tess’kindness and her story remind us of the women`s rights in society.Almost all the people focus their attention on this problem.Until then, it has been hot topic in public.Wherever you are, taking good care of girls is our duty .On no condition should we maltreat them.Only we can wake society by showing “ladies first”.

Tess’ struggles against difficulties failed .She lost herself. But we also admire her for her courage .At that time, she was really she was, though failed. She had spent months regretting her experience and crying over it but suddenly decided that the past was the past .Her shame and herself would be forgotten, meanwhile the sun shines just as brightly as before. Life went on. Be awake, everyone! A day may come when the courage of Men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but not this day. Because Tess has told us: no sleepwalking, we are ready.

When Love And Revenge Embrace

Perhaps yesterday we are still a group of children full of love. But from today, we must take up weapon and begin to revenge, even have to become cruel and degenerate, how should we do? And now I will tell you my thoughts on reading Wuthering Heights, the book written by Emily Bronte. This is a story about love and revenge.

I spent half of a month finishing reading Wuthering Heights. I can not help but marvel. How can the writer who resided deep in the mountains and almost never came into contact with the outside world write such a novel to make us love and hate? I found some information which showed that the writer Emily’s life was brief, and she was not educated and had no practical experience of love and marriage. So people are confused about this. Some said maybe she was a genius at writing, while others said this was she belonged to Celtics, a romantic nation. We cannot know the reason, but this is a fact that she created the novel.

At the beginning of the novel, Mr. Earnshow brought back an unidentified child and named him Heathcliff. Mr. Earnshow gave him all his favor and made the little master Hendry and his sister Catherine hate the baby. This planted the seeds for later story. Several years later, after the death of Mr. Earnshow, Heathcliff was persecuted in every possible way and even had to see his loved girl Catherine marry Linton. Next part is the most important part. Heathcliff began to crazily revenge. He used all kinds of finesses to kill everyone, including Catherine. And at last, he also missed Catherine and died painfully.

The arrival of Heathcliff caused the family to lose balance. Hendry would naturally be dissatisfied because he losed love from his father. We cannot request such a child to tolerance, in fact, few people can truly do this. So a series of revenge followed. Harringtong became the victim of Hendry, Isabella became the victim of Linton. Just because of hatred, Heathcliff preferred to watch his son feel painful and eventually died. He was out of control. Of course, he also had love, the love to Catherine. They loved each other but couldn’t be together, this led to the hatred between Heathcliff and Linton. Sometimes love and hate are far away, but sometimes they are so close.

The choice of love and hate, Heathcliff was a tragedy. I cannot imagine that when he plunged into the memories of the past with the love to Catherine, how painful he was! But in the end, he was maybe happy----he died with a smile----he should have been freed from hate.

There are three graves in the hill: Catherine’s was in the middle, the right was Linton’s, the left was Heathcliff’s. When love and revenge embrace, maybe this is the most beautiful interpretation of love and hate.

The Great Love from a Dog

The Call of the Wild is either an interesting book or a moving book. Once you start to read it, you can’t stop. The story is too attractive. I think everyone will like it just like me. Now let me tell you what the story is about.

Buck was an excellent dog. He was strong, nice and clever. He had lived with the Mr. Millers in the sunny Santa Clara valley up to the age of four. He was happy and relaxing there. However in 1897, men and dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. So Buck was sold to these men and was carried to the cold north. There he learned to pull the sledge and run on the thick snow. He also knew the law of club and tooth. If he wasn’t hard-working enough, he would

be beaten by the clubs and if he wasn’t strong or quick enough, he would be bitten by the teeth. In this case, Buck soon got stronger and cleverer.

The men who led the dogs were not all good at their job. Under the command of the good men, Buck and his team worked easily. Opposite, under the command of the bad ones, they worked hard and tiredly. So they often kept working day by day and didn’t be allowed to rest. The poor Buck was just skin and bone after pulling for over five thousand kilometers. When he was hit by a wild man, John Thornton saved him. Thornton was kind, and he took very good care of Buck. In face, he looked on Buck as his own child. He was always talking to Buck, holding his head and shaking it lovingly. In answer, Buck liked to take Thornton’s hand gently in his mouth. Buck slowly got fatter and stronger.

The days passed very happily, and for the first time, Buck learned to love. He had never loved a man before, but now he loved Thornton deeply, and him alone. He would obey Thornton’s any order, even a crazy one. And he would protect Thornton in any case. As we had known, Thornton saved Buck, and in return, Buck saved Thornton several times. One time, Thornton was hit by a man who was fighting with another man, and he nearly fell. Buck flew through the air at the man’s throat immediately. Another time, Thornton’s boat turned over, and he was thrown into the water. Buck jumped in at once and swam to him. Thornton held on to Buck, and Buck swam to the bank as hard as he could. When they were safe, both of them seemed more dead than alive.

Buck was more and more like a wild animal, and his dreams were filled with other animals―dogs, half-wolves, and wild wolves or a strange hairy man sitting next to him. They seemed to call him into the forest. But every time when he wanted to answer the call and went into the trees, his love for Thornton brought him back. Buck’s love for Thornton was too strong. Thornton was more important than any other things for Buck.

One day, bad things took place. Thornton, his friends and the other dogs were all killed by the Yeehats with arrows. When Buck came back from the forest, he was astonished. And soon he was filled with a wild burning anger. He threw himself on the Yeehats like a mad dog. He moved like a storm among them, tearing, biting, and destroying, in a madness that he had never known before. He finished his revenge.

Later, Buck went into the forest and led a pack of wolves. He became a real wild animal and he was larger than any wolf. But the love for Thornton was in his heart all the time. In the moonlight, he always remembered Thornton and felt quite sad.

I like Buck, and respect Buck. He was the best dog in the world because he owned love. For the love, he was willing to do anything. He was more a man than a dog. Love is the greatest thing in this world, and nothing could stop it. Love was equal to anyone, either human beings or animals. So we should measure the different love with animals, take good care of animals around us. The love from an animal means much.

FIGHT WITH THE HARDSHIP, GO FOR THE HAPPINESS

—After reading Jane Eyre

Guess what? The first time I read the title of the book, I even thought it might be a story about love. But when I finished reading the novel, I knew I was wrong. It tells us a good story, and it’s said the writer, Charlotte Bronte, was the original shape of the character, Jane Eyre. She lived lonely under the press of her severe father. When the book was published, she had to use a pen name —Bell, which is a boy’s name. It proved to be a hit. When Charlotte Bronte’s identity was announced, it caught more people’s attention.

What impresses me most about Jane Eyre?

Her Childhood: If you ask me find a word to cover it, I must say it is “hardship”. She lived in Aunt Reed’s house, but the member of the family didn’t care for Jane at all. They spoke ill back of her, criticized her and even hit her. But what had done to her didn’t defeat her but just made her stronger and stronger, just as the proverb says “When God closes the door, he also opens a window for you.” Something came better when she came to the school Lowood. At first, I feel happy for Jane, but in fact it wasn’t easy for her to earn a living. Without love of parents, enough food, good medical care, they couldn’t fight with the cold winter and terrible illness. She once had friends but lost them in the end. Fortunately, the sad life didn’t hit her; on the opposite, she became more intellectual, more active and even more powerful.

Her arrival at Thornfied: Several years passing by, she became a private teacher in Thornified. She enjoyed it a lot. She lived a happy life for three months. When she met Rochester, the master of Thornified, she was attracted by him. They got along well with each other. During these days, she found everything was so nice. Maybe, she fell in love. But at a party, they happened to meet on the field, some misunderstandings produced. They talked and then quarreled. Jane cried: “Do you think I don’t have any feelings? Do you think it’s all right to say any thing at all to me because I’m not rich or beautiful? If I were not plain, I would make it difficult for you to leave me, just as it’s difficult for me to leave you now!” What she said appeared that she was an independent、rational girl; she was eager for equality, and seeking for the true love.

The wedding: Finally, they became reconciled, and then, they held a wedding. However, at the wedding, someone announced that “Rochester has already had a wife” , which hurt Jane deeply. She chose to leave. Then she had a difficult time earning her life, which was so hard, painstaking, and helter-skelter. After experiencing a lot, she came back in the end. All things changed. There was a house that had been burned in the middle of a dark forest. It’s Thornfied! She ran into it rapidly, she couldn’t forget the garden、the life in Thornfied and—Mr. Rochester. Of course, in the end, all problems were solved: they got married and lived a happy life. They were surrounded by happiness.

The moving story of Jane makes a deep impression on me. Although the life was hard, she faced it and fought against it. Although at that time, women couldn’t be equal to men, she longed for freedom and equality.

She is strong, not afraid of any danger; she is optimistic, cannot be defeated by the hardship;

she is really independent, never gives up. She wants to find her own way. There are also many heroines today, who all have confidence in common. Without it, Helen won’t write Give me three days if the bright; without it, Hillary won’t be the secretary of State. They not only help themselves get to the top, but also set good examples to others.

As the proverb says, “Without ideal, there is no direction. Without direction, there is no success”, life won’t be easy all the time, and you won’t always be the lucky dog. Hope is always available to us, but when we feel discouraged, we need only take a deep breath and say “I can make it!”.
