Book Report on Gulliver's Travels

Gulliver's Travels is the most famous novel of Jonathan Swift (W. W. Norton & Company, 2001). It was first published in 1726. This novel is consist of 4 parts, and every part has its own deep thought. Swift wrote a story which reflects the real society of England. At the same time, the novel also be read as an interesting and playful children’s story.

Part 1 is about a voyage to Lilliput. Lemuel Gulliver who is a doctor enjoys travelling. He is rescued by the tiny people after a shipwreck, and he is send to Lilliput. Lilliput is a country whose inhabitants are no more than six inches tall, so Gulliver is a giant for the people in Lilliput. With a good behavior, Gulliver is given a residence in Lilliput. Then, he successfully fights with Lilliput’s neighbor Blefuscudians by himself. King is glad about this, but Gulliver refuses to destroy Blefuscudians which makes king upset. And Gulliver also makes queen very angry because Gulliver puts out a fire in queen’s palace with his urine. Gulliver escapes to England after he knows that the king decides to kill him. Part 2 is about a voyage to Brobdingnag. This time Gulliver is rescued by a farmer after another shipwreck. The framer comes from Brobdingnag which is a land to giants. The farmer treats Gulliver as a curiosity and exhibits him for money. After a while the constant shows make Gulliver sick, and the farmer sells him to the queen. In palace, he tells the king the history of England, but the king never believes him. One day, when he has a rest near seaside, he is drop in the sea by a giant eagle. Gulliver returns to English after he is rescue. Part 3 is about a voyage to several magic places. He begins his voyage again. This time the ship is attracted by pirates. He escapes and rescued by the flying island of Laputa. He also visited Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib, and Japan. All those places all different from the England world, and the rules are so strange even some of it are wrong. Finally, he returns to England. Part 4 is about a voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms. In Houyhnhnms, he meets a race of horses who are the rulers. Gulliver becomes a member of a horse's household, and comes to both admire and emulate their lifestyle. However, the country makes a new rule that kill all people.

Gulliver has to escape, and he returns to his home in England, but he is unable to reconcile himself to living among real people. He remains in his house, and spending his rest life with a horse.

The first part in Lilliput, the writer describes the world from a giant’s eye. The king is greed and wars happen all around the world. The second part in Brobdingnag, the writer creates a tiny person. As a tiny person, Gulliver is oppressed and the people are cold-blooded. The third part in some magic places, people call white black. The last part in Houyhnhnms, horse is the ruler. Compared with human being, horse is more rational and just. The whole book shows a fantastic story just like a children’s tale. In fact, the novel shows the ugly society, and the writer reflects the human’s ugly from different aspects. It is worthy to reading again and again, then, you need to think.

教学目标:

1、知识与能力

(1)能说出与作者、作品相关的常识;

(2)学习阅读名著的方法,泛读、精读小说内容;

(3)能简要分析小说中的主要人物,艺术手法。

2、过程与方法

在学生充分自主阅读小说的基础上,先介绍阅读名著的方法。然后通过小组讨论、比赛竞争的方式激发学生的积极性,通过研讨,把握小说的主要人物和艺术特色。

3、情感、态度与价值观

学习斯威夫特的尖锐的讽刺艺术和忧世情怀,并由此对社会、人生有新的感悟。

教学重点:采用多种手法阅读小说内容,并复述故事梗概。

教学难点:分析小说中的主要人物,艺术手法。

教学准备:多媒体手段辅助

课时安排:一课时

教学过程:

一、导入新课

1726年在英国出版了一本新书,它刚一问世就受到读者的热烈欢迎,一周之内售空;三周售出一万册。出版几个多世纪以来,被翻译成几十种语言,在世界各国广为流传。作者运用了讽刺影射的手法,反映当时英国的自大和狂妄。虽然此作品没能超越它的时代和地方的局限,可是小人国和大人国仍被认为是“文学的伟大宝库之一”“电影的伟大宝库之一”。它是什么书呢?对了,它就是英国作家斯威夫特的《格列佛游记》。

二、阅读名著的方法:

(一)先读前言、后记和目录。

阅读一本书的前言、后记和目录能对这本书的写作背景、作者情况、写作目的和大致内容有个初步的了解。

(二)略读与精读相结合。

略读全书,有利于整体把握主要内容,精彩部分和难点则需要像读课文一样精读,二者结合,收获更多。

(三)做点读书笔记。

可以抄名言、写摘要、作批注、列提纲、制卡片,画图表,写心得等,养成“不动笔墨不读书”的习惯。

此外,在阅读过程中还要注意利用工具书和有关参考资料,以加深理解,扩展视野。

三、泛读

1、泛读小说,请同学们简要介绍一下作者和创作背景。

乔纳森·斯威夫特(1667~1745),英国讽刺作家、政治家、诗人,以讽刺作品名垂青史。他出生于爱尔兰首府都柏林一个贫困家庭,由叔父抚养成人。1723年,英国政府委派政治流氓伍德为爱尔兰铸铜币,弄得民不聊生。斯威夫特连续发表几封公开信,鼓励爱尔兰人民起来反对铸币阴谋。他成了爱尔兰民族独立自由运动的领导者。斗争取得胜利后,他又赴伦敦为爱尔兰人民的利益奋斗。当他返回爱尔兰时,无数农民自发从水陆两路迎接他。

他是英国18世纪前期最优秀的讽刺作家和政治家。代表作《格列佛游记》。

乔纳森·斯威夫特于1710年至1714年间,曾出任以罗伯特·哈利及亨利·圣约翰的托利党的公共关系官员,后来政党交替,辉格党上台,托利党党员被清算。于是作者透过第一部小人国的历险暗讽当时的政治。其次,作者后来到爱尔兰任教,爱尔兰当时受到英格兰的高压统治,于是作者通过第三部诸岛国游记反映爱尔兰农业的衰败。

四、略读目录,了解故事梗概

学生快速读目录,挑选自己感兴趣的某一章节进行精读,用简介的语言概括章节内容(要求:语言流畅、情节完整、细节生动),然后以小组为单位交流自己所读章节的主要内容,小组内推选讲故事最好的人作为代表参加全班的比赛,学生评价,选出最佳故事大王。

五、研讨

1、格列佛是个什么样的人,从刚来你感兴趣的章节中找到相关信息加以分析。以小组为单位交流成果。 格列佛是一个天生喜欢冒险,不甘寂寞与无聊的人。他是一个勤劳勇敢、机智善良的人。他记忆力很强,善于学习和观察,善于思考,有独特的思维,性情朴实温和,对人态度友好,举止善良,容易与人交往,知恩图报,有君子之风,愿意帮助朋友,为了朋友他甘愿冒生命危险,也会随时准备抗击一切对朋友不利的人。同时他聪明机智,有胆识,处事圆滑合理,说话巧妙伶俐,做事坚决果断,能够见机行事,抓住一切机会追求自由,有着极强的自信心,相信自己能够成功。他为人坦率,爱国,也十分顾惜自己的面子,对敌视他,和无耻的人(比如“野胡”)充满了仇恨、厌恶与鄙视,但敬重高尚的人、知识丰富的学者。总的来说他是一个具有质疑精神,酷爱真理,有忍耐力的游者。

2、这部书艺术上最大的特点是讽刺, 当时的英国是作者抨击和挖苦的对象。 小说不但抨击了社会现状,还在更深的层面上,直接讽刺了人性本身。你能从格列佛的经历中找到讽刺的对象吗?试着总结一下,并制成读书卡片。

小说第一卷中所描绘的小人国的情景乃是当时大英帝国的缩影。当时英国国内托利党和辉格党常年不息的斗争和对外的战争,实质上只是政客们在一些国计民生毫不相干的小节上勾心斗角。

小说的第二卷则通过大人国国王对格列佛引以为荣的英国选举制度、议会制度以及种种政教措施所进行的尖锐的抨击,对当时英国各种制度及政教措施表示了怀疑和否定。

小说的第三卷,作者把讽刺的锋芒指向了当时的英国哲学家,脱离实际、沉溺于幻想的科学家,荒诞不经的发明家和颠倒黑白的评论家和史学家等。

小说第四卷,作者利用格列佛回答一连串问题而揭露了战争的实质、法律的虚伪和不择手段以获得公爵地位的可耻行为等。
