In 1977 , a dead author of detective stories saved the life of a nineteen-month-old baby in a most unusual way. The author was Agatha Christie, a gentle married lady and one of the most successful writers of detective stories in the world.

In June 1977 , a baby girl became seriously ill in Qatar (卡塔尔) , near Sandi Arabia(沙特阿拉伯) . Doctors were unable to find out the cause of her illness, so she was flown to London and sent to Hammersmith Hospital. A team of doctors hurried to examine the baby only to discover that they, too, were puzzled by the very unusual signs of illness. While they were having a discussion about the baby's illness, a nurse asked to speak to them.

“Excuse me,” said Nurse Marsha Maitland, “but I think the baby is suffering from thallium poisoning(铊中毒) .”

“What makes you think that?” Dr. Brown asked. “Thallium poisoning is very rare.”

“A few days ago, I was reading a novel called ?A Pale Horse' by Agatha Christie,” Nurse Maitland explained. “In the book, somebody uses thallium poison, and all the signs are exactly the same as the baby' s . ”

For years and years people have been saying that the rail ways are dead. “We can do without railways”, people say as if motorcars and planes have made the railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose money, and that they?re dying. But this is far from the truth. In these days of expensive oil, the railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they are cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway. What is more, it takes you from the heart of a city into the heart of another. It doesn?t leave you as a plane does, miles and miles from the city center. It doesn?t hold you up as a car does, in endless traffic jams. And a single train can carry goods which no plane or motorcar could ever do.

Far from being dead, the railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are traveling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning, for we 超速列车). A local government in Eastern England is starting a new plan for getting children to and from school. This could end the worries of many parents fearful for their children's safety on the roads.

Until now the local government have only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will be attending their nearest school.

The new plan is to be tried out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three-mile limit and the local government said in the past that they would not undertake to provide free transport to the school. But now they have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school's headmaster.

Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part. Final calculations have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should be less than ?20 a term.

5

They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away from Impington. The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in the past had asked if transport could be provided for their children, to see if they would like to take part in the new plan.

51.What is the aim of the plan?

A. To prevent the students' road accidents. B. To relieve the traffic pressure.

C. To save time for the parents and students. D. To help the parents save money.

52. How can the local government arrange the new bus service at a low cost?

A. By letting the bus run in the morning only.

B. By limiting the number of the students.

C. By getting the support from the headmaster.

D. By linking the new bus service with the existing one.

53.The new bus service will be paid for by _________

A. the parents . B. the local government

C. the bus company D. the local government and the parents

54.Which of the following is possible if the plan is carried out?

B. The children can choose whatever school they like.

C. The parents can get rid of their worries.

D. The students in Impington School can have free bus rides.

A. a personal letter B. an advertisement C. a headmaster's report D. a newspaper article D

"Aw, isn't it cute?"

That, right there, is the officially accepted response to any animal contact the world over. Animals are cute. They're there to be photographed, loved, and occasionally fed. But you know When you travel, you come into contact with all sorts of animals you?ve never heard of before. Some of them are amazing creatures that you'll talk about for the rest of your life. Some of them are just annoying. So, at the risk of causing anger among animal lovers around the world, here are some of the world's most annoying animals.

Vervet monkeys, South Africa

You'll immediately notice two things about Vervet monkeys: they have a bright blue bottom; and they'll steal any food that's not locked in a bank safe. I recently spent some time in South Africa, and watched as monkey after monkey dived in from the trees and stole everyone's food. Get your own food, Vervets! My sandwich was expensive!!

6

Kea parrots, New Zealand

I have never seen one of these birds before but from what I've been told they are more annoying than a spoilt kid. From biting the paint off your car doors to stealing people's passports, Keas are probably the most curious, and therefore annoying, animals in the world. And they're New Zealanders. That makes sense!

Kangaroos, Australia

Another well-known food-stealer, kangaroos are loved by tourists, eaten by Australians, and generally enjoy making trouble for others. Go on a camping trip anywhere in Australia, and watch how long your bags of food last. Turn your back for 15 minutes and the camp will look like thieves have turned the place upside down.

Grizzly bears, USA

They look pretty cute, grizzly bears. You almost want to go up and give them a hug. Unfortunately, it wouldn't end well. In fact, one of the world's most huggable creatures is also the one most likely to kill you just because it can. Oh, and it'll steal your picnic basket, too.

56. Which of the following best describes the tone of the passage?

A. Humorous. B. Angry. C. Sad. D. Frightening.

57. The author uses the underlined expression “pain in the neck” to suggest ____________.

A. these animals may bite you on the neck

B. these animals may cause some serious illness

C. people should be fearful of these animals

D. these animals can cause people a lot of trouble

58. In which part of the newspaper would you probably find this passage?

A. International. B. Travel. C. Environmental. D. Opinion.

59. Which of the animals is the most dangerous according to the writer?

A. Vervet monkeys. B. Kea Parrots. C. Kangaroos. D. Grizzly Bears.

60. Which of the following is not correct according to the passage?

A. When people see the cute animals they might take photographs of them.

B. Sometimes people will feed the cute animals.

C. Spoilt kids are not annoying at all.

D. Australians eat kangaroos.
