For a baptism of fire, an introduction to the rigours of corporate life with an international finance house couldn’t have been more challenging. As an aspiring young graduate my summer internship with Goldman Sachs was a truly enlightening experience. Being exposed to the realities of real-time deal-** even afforded me the opportunity to actively engage in extensive quality research and due diligence of a global perspective. The knowledge I gained surpassed anything previously experienced.

Accordingly, the flame of desire within me to pursue a challenge involving the corporate world has now been ignited. The cutting-edge world of the investment community has opened my eyes to the strategic professional

requirements of the modern-day workplace environment. I would now relish, therefore, the opportunity and competitiveness of a prestigious Western

teaching programme to test my ripening as a young professional, one who is fully capable of confronting and overcoming the trials currently besetting today’s globalised community.

I have selected the Major of Earth Economics at Harvard because of its unique multidisciplinary study of some of the most significant and crucial issues of our time, namely law, economics, economics and management. I pride

myself in having developed an inquisitive mind, with critical and analytical skills, together with a flexibility of mind to take full advantage the complex and diverse nature of the programme. I have always challenged myself with the “Why?” “Why not?”“How?” questions in seeking to deepen my understanding of my studies to date.

All graduates in modern times face the challenge of marketability. The demand for those individuals with an exposure to such an interdisciplinary approach is likely to remain strong across a variety of professions. I have also become aware that the employability of those with an Earth Economics background is becoming more diverse, with major investment houses now considering setting up their own specialist wings. With that in mind, I am

excited by the prospect of joining an esteemed programme of likewise intellectuals from such diverse fields.

Together with my dedicated work experience with such international brand names as Putnam Investment, and China Petroleum, my studies to date have thoroughly prepared me for the precision of intense academic study which no doubt your programme incurs. Having had a passion for maths and economics from an early age I now seek a respected vehicle to motivate, inspire and maximise my individual potential. The prospect of applying theories and techniques learned in the classroom to current economic issues of our time would be an experience I am sure which would motivate and arouse me. Equally, the opportunity to hear at first hand from major industry pacesetters would further invigorate me.

Indeed, the more I explore, the more obsessed I have become with the field of Earth Economics, which I now discover to be one of the most sought after disciplines, and also one which can shape the very environment in which people live their everyday lives. The Marine Corps places great emphasis on leadership characteristics， believing that great leaders are not born， they are properly trained. I submitted to grueling training on my way to becoming an officer in the Marines， and believe this training gives me the foundation of strong leadership skills that I will need in every day corporateAmerica.

　　Leadership in the Marine Corps is more complicated than the simple management of employees. I learned this lesson the hard way， being thrust into a management position as my unit was being shipped over seas during the Persian Gulf War. As a newly promoted Corporal， I was given the job of night crew supervisor in charge of 15 other marines. In the Marine Corps， leaders are not only held accountable for the work getting done but also for the performance and conduct of their marines. At the age of 21，I had the responsibility not only to carry out my orders but also to safeguard the personal lives and protect the general welfare of my men. This being my second time over seas， I understood many of the difficulties that a young marine can have on their first extended trip away from their family. I enjoyed helping my marines over come their problems， and learned that the benefits were well worth the time that I invested. I discovered that employees who have the support of their management tend to be more focused on the tasks at hand， gaining levels of trust and loyalty that can only benefit the organization.

　　Related to this issue of gaining trust and loyalty through management supportiveness is that the Marine Corps requires creative means to motivate subordinates. It can be very difficult at times to be in charge of individuals， yet have no direct control over their salaries or advancement in the organization. The government decides military salaries， and promotions are controlled by boards with the primary means of measurement being time in service. For this reason， I learned to manage through mutual respect. I believe it is much more important to gain the trust and confidence of your employees than to use direct compensation to motivate them.

　　Throughout my Marine Corps career and beyond I developed many strong leadership skills， but most of all I learned that to be effective as a manager one must remain focused on the human aspect of leadership. By concentrating too much on the goal and not on the people needed to meet it， leaders risk alienating their employees and thus failure in achieving the goal itself. By leveraging the lessons and qualities I gained while serving as an officer in the Marine Corps， I hope to meaningfully contribute to the academic environment at the Anderson School of Business.
