My learning experience of Physical English

I have gained a lot of translation and physical knowledge through the discipline of the Physical English. On the one hand, through the introduction of every unit, I have reviewed the discipline what I have learned as a freshman and sophomore, include classical mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics, atomic physics and obtained a rudimentary knowledge of statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics and special relativity. On the other hand, through the scientific study, I have learned a lot of physical general terms and some basic sentential form which is of great help to my reading of physical literature.

In this class, I also learned some skills of reading literature which give me a hand to my Programs of Scientific Research. At the beginning of my research last semester, I tried to read as many papers as possible and tried to get all details of papers. But there are so many papers and so many problems. I did not know what I should read more and what I should focus on. In fact, I found that I did not know how to do research. After several weeks I was got stuck and I want to give up.

Through the translation practice in the Physical English class and searching on the website, I summed up the following points: First of all, read the abstract, skim section headlines, introduction and conclusion. Secondly, read each section and mark the author’s viewpoint. Finely, read through the literature and mark off the sections which are particularly applicable. In addition, read scientific and technical literature needs patience. In the beginning, maybe I would spend two days in reading a new literature, but when I read this literature the second time, maybe I just spend one day, and when I read this literature the third time, maybe I spend only a half ! Finely, I discovered the benefit of reading English literature: compared with reading translation text, author’s viewpoint would be better understood by reading the original English literature.

In a word, the knowledge and skills I have obtained in the Physical English class is quite useful to my physical study.
