Today was not a good day. Everything went wrong. First, I sleep late and Mom shout at me

to wake up. When I went to the kitchen for breakfast, there was no cereal. I decided to have some toast instead, but I burned it. I had to eat it anyway because there was no more bread. There was no juice, either. I just had a glass of water.

When I was almost at the bus stop, I realized that I had forgotten my wallet, so I had to go

back home and get it. Of course, I missed the bus and had to wait for the next bus.

I was late for school and the teacher told me to stay in the classroom at lunchtime to catch up

on(弥补)the schoolwork I had missed.

After lunch, it was the time to give the teacher our homework. I reached into my bag to get it

but it wasn’t there. I had left it at home. I was in trouble again.

When I got home, I went straight to my room to catch up on my homework. Mom cooked

fish for dinner. She knows I don’t like fish, but she thinks it is good for her son. It was a horrible day. I hope tomorrow will be better.

On a hot African morning, Leila was lying on her stomach and an elephant was walking towards her. Leila waited. Then she pushed the button on her camera. “And I got my best photo of an elephant ever, by lying under my car,” Leila explained. “I wanted to get close to the elephants, but of course this was dangerous; they had their babies with them. So every morning I used to park my car in the open near the path (小道). They used to take the same path every morning when they left the water hole. After a week, they were used to seeing my car. So the next morning, I lay under it and got my photo!”

Many of the best wildlife photos come from good planning. In Africa, photographers set up their hides (隐匿处) near water holes. They also set up hides near forest paths, as animals use the same paths every night. For bird-watching, many lakes have hides. Inside the hides, bird-watchers can watch all day in the shade (荫处) out of the wind and rain.

Good wildlife photos are needed for books, postcards, magazines and newspapers. But a success rate of 1 in 20 is good.

35. Why did Leila lie under her car on the stomach? A. Because she wanted to sleep. B. Because she wanted to take photos but was afraid of the animals. C. Because it’s easy to see the elephants.

D. Because it’s very comfortable.

B. eat it too fast D. make it very well

34. When you “burn” something, you ___________________.

36. How can photographers take good photos? A. By making good preparation. B. By going into the forest at night. C. By walking around the holes. D. By going to the nearest lake.

37. Which of the following statements is right according to the passage? A. All animals go to water holes at night. B. Lakes are good places for bird-watching.

C. Leila used her car to prevent the sunshine. D. Animals pay no attention to photographers.

C A strange thing happens to nearly everybody at night. They turn off the lights, put up the covers and close their eyes. Six or seven hours later, they wake up again. Strange, isn’t it? Sleep puzzles science. Scientists and doctors would rather talk about why one can’t fall asleep. They are not so sure what causes sleep.

The best conditions for sleep, they say, are good health and meal neither too big nor too small. No worries and a comfortable place to sleep in are important, too. They advise against two in one

bed.

Strange things happen during sleep. For example, you move often. You would feel tired if you didn’t. You also dream. Part of your brain is still awake when you dream. Dreaming happens when the memory and imagination parts of your brain are still awake. Experiments have shown that bad dreams may be caused by a stomachache.

Don’t worry if you dream. Some great stories and poems were begun while the writers slept. 38. Sleep puzzles scientists because they are not certain _______.

A. why one can’t fall asleep

B. why one wakes up six or seven sleeping hours later C. both A and B D. what causes sleep

39. You would feel tired during sleep if you ________.

A. move often

B. sleep on your back

C. didn’t move

D. went back too later

40. Dreaming happens when _______. A. you are in a deep sleep

B. you are not comfortable

D. there’s too much noise in the room

In 1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But

he was not a good artist, so he invented a very simple camera. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.

The next important date in the history of photography (摄影) was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his picture you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest thing. This kind of photo was called Daguerreotype.

Soon, other people began to use Daguerre’s way. Travelers brought back wonderful photos from all around the world. People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains.

In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers could take pictures of people and moving things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of film and other machines. But this did not stop them, for example, some in the United States worked so hard. Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The

Dear Cheng Wei,

I’m very glad to know that you will get a chance to study in London for a year. I’d like to tell you something about London so that you can have some ideas about it before you come.

London is certainly one of the most famous cities in the world and the school which you are to attend is also well known. I am sure that you will improve your English quickly here by communicating with teachers and students here.

After you come to London, you will live with a host family, which is a good way to help you learn more about the local customs and the English people’s way of life. During your spare time, you can go to visit the places of interest in London, such as Big Ben, the River Thames and the London Eye.

Of course, there are some disadvantages living in London, for example, traveling, at times, can be difficult, particularly by car. Despite these things, I am sure you will have a good time

staying and studying in London.

Looking forward to your coming.

Yours,

Jack

On Christmas Eve 1971, Julia Smith was taking a flight in Peru with her mother to join her father, a professor, who was an expert on the jungle and plants and animals living there. Unfortunately, the plane crashed in a storm. The passengers all died except Julia who only had a few cuts. She was determined to survive. She had no map, only a bag of sweets and her torn clothes. She found a stream and followed it, trying to keep in the shade as much as possible, because she had no hat. For ten days, she walked along the river, eating fruits from the trees. At night she slept near the riverbank, on the ground which was wet from the rain. She often felt weak,

but she refused to give up. On the 10th day, she arrived at a small hut. The three Indian hunters who visited the hut every two weeks rescued her and took her by boat to a small village from where she was flown to a hospital. She was safe at last.
