It's no surprise to see why Lindau, Germany, is a popular summer vacation spot. It's a charming, colourful town, filled with cafes, art galleries(馆), and sailboats.
A bigger surprise is that each summer Lindau also opens its doors wide to the world of science. During the first week of July, 2013, 625 young scientists from 77 countries gathered here for the Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting. A Nobel laureate is a person who has been awarded the highest honour in science.
The goals of the Lindau meetings are: “Educate. Inspire. Connect.” This year, 34 Nobel laureates joined young researchers for a week of science lectures, discussions, and special events, which included visits to local schools, international dinners, and traditional music.
Each year, the Lindau meeting has a theme. This year's theme is chemistry. “Chemistry is involved in almost everything, from the shoes we wear to the food we eat,” said Jon Moerdyk, a student from Texas University, who attended the meetings.
The young researchers who travelled to Lindau were happy to describe how they became interested in science. Laura Mazzaferro, who grew up in Argentina, is now working in a lab in Freiburg, Germany. She says what inspired her were “the books my mum gave me that explained the ‘why’ of many things. For instance,‘why do storms happen?’” Mazzaferro now studies chemical reactions in tiny organisms, and hopes her research will help people live healthier lives.
Banothile Makhubela, who grew up in South Africa, says that it was her love of insects that got her interested in science. “When I was about eleven,” Makhubela says, “I was amazed at seeing an insect that produced light when it flew.” In a class project with other students, she then learned how certain organisms use chemical reactions to produce light.

Residents(居民) could be forced to rise from bed and put out their bins at 5 am under proposals to keep streets tidier.
1
They would only be able to leave waste on the public highway for collection during two hour?long periods—from 5 pm to 6 pm, and from 5 am to 6 am Collections of residential and commercial waste are then timed for between 6 am and 8 am, and 6 pm and 8 pm.
Those residents who fail to meet the restrictions put forwards by Merton Council(地方议会), in South London, will be fined.
The council says that it hopes the move will “improve the cleanliness and overall street environment” by reducing the amount of time waste is left on the street for collection.
However, with many working residents likely to arrive home from work after 6:00 in the afternoon, homeowners will be forced to rise at 5 am to put out their waste.
A trial run is expected to take place in a defined area of Wimbledon Village and Wimbledon Town Centre from April, 2013, following a consultation process.
Councilor(议员) Mark Betteridge, cabinet member for performance and implementation(实施), said,“Time banding will help improve the cleanliness of our streets and make our town centres more pleasant and attractive for all. And we want to make Wimbledon a destination town centre for people to visit.”
An informal consultation on the proposals will take place over the coming weeks when officers will be speaking to businesses and residents about the plans.
A council spokesman said residents in affected areas would have a three?month trial before they would be fined.
1.How would those who break the restrictions be punished?(No more than 5 words) ________________________________________________________________________
2.What is the purpose of the restrictions put forward by Merton Council?(No more than 15 words)
________________________________________________________________________
3.To meet the restrictions, why do many working residents have to get up early to put out their waste?(No more than 10 words)

The cat Holly has become an Internet sensation(轰动), and puzzled animal experts by trekking 200 miles home after disappearing on a family road trip eight weeks earlier.
Too tired to stand and too weak to miaow, the cat appeared from nowhere on New Year's Eve in the back garden of a Florida family home.
For six days, Barb Mazzola and her children put out food and milk for the nervous animal, finally attracting her to enter their house in West Palm Beach.
They fell in love with the cat. But when Mrs Mazzola took it to the vet, she reluctantly asked if the cat had an implanted microchip(内植芯片) that would identify its original owners. She did. And it turned out that her name was Holly and that her owners Jacob and Bonnie Richter lived just a mile away.
2
But what was truly remarkable was that they had lost Holly two months earlier when she jumped out of their mobile home on a trip to Daytona Beach—200 miles north along Florida's Atlantic coast.
How Holly, a house cat who rarely ventured outside, managed to make it to get back to her hometown from some unknown place so far away has puzzled animal behaviourists.
“It is a complete mystery,” said Marc Bekoff, a professor from Colorado University. “She may have had some basic sense of direction and then got clues from sights or sounds as she got closer, but the truth is that we have no idea how she got home.”
What seems certain, judging from the state of its paws, is that it walked home by road and pavement. Its back feet, the ones that cat use to push themselves forwards, were swollen(肿胀的), and the claws were hurt.
1.How was Holly when she appeared in Mrs Mazzola's back garden? (No more than 6 words)
________________________________________________________________________
2.How did Mrs Mazzola make the cat enter her house?(No more than 9 words) ________________________________________________________________________
3.What made Barb Mazzola find the cat's original owners? (No more than 6 words) ________________________________________________________________________
4.What can be concluded from the state of the cat's paws?(No more than 8 words) ________________________________________________________________________
