Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Two people can become gooe friends enen if one of them has more money than the other.

Generally, I disagree with the statement that two people can be friends if one is richer than the other. In many TV, plays and movies, there is often the story of a poor boy and a rich girl eventually becoming friends. However, their fairytales only ever happen in fiction. In the reality, this never happens because rich and poor people have very different goals in life and very different lifestyles.

To begin with, different goals in life between the rich and the poor are a vital barrier for them to become friends. Even from the beginning of their lives, they undertake different missions. Poor people’s goal in life is mostly to lead a decent life, and to be able to buy things such as a comfortable house and a functional car. However, rich people’s goal in life is to continue their parents’ business. For example, disadvantaged people are fighting for survival in the cutting-throat competition of this society, such as paying the mortgage and the credit card, while rich people have to think about how to expand their family business in other countries. So they are not living in the same world and do not bear the same chance to know each other, let alone become friends.

Second, the different ways of living prevent the friendship from taking shape between them. On this point, poor people will definitely repel rich people because they feel less confident. For example, when they finish their jobs, what can poor people afford to do every day is to simply go back home and be with their family members. Rich people, on the other hand, have many different choices in how to spend their free time. For instance, rich people can go to gulf club to enjoy the fresh air and indulge themselves in equestrian event or racecourse. Therefore, talking about the similar lifestyle which paves the road of friendship, these two groups of people are speaking different language.

Admittedly, exceptions do exist in some special aspects. Basketball players serve as good examples. In NBA, about 50 percent of players were born in slums. However, when they finally earn tons of money, they still are contacting and helping their friends who were not rich at all. Allen Iverson is a NBA player, but he always holds the parties with his friends in slums and does what he can do to help his friend to get rid of poverty.

All in all, in most cases, people with huge difference in their economic conditions cannot be friends for lack of lifestyle and life goals in common, despite few exceptions. (431)

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Convenience foods will become increasingly prevalent and eventually replace traditional methods of food preparation.

The increasing availability of convenience foods has been a significant feature of modern life in many developed countries. Some people have predicted that with advances in food technology, traditional foods and traditional methods of food preparation will disappear. In this essay, I will argue that this is unlikely to happen.

It is true that nowadays many people do not have enough time to cook and that convenience foods present an attractive option. These foods have improved significantly in terms of quality and availability and the range for sale in the average supermarket is quite impressive. It is possible to find even very sophisticated ready-prepared microwavable meals.

However, the growing popularity of television cookery program, “celebrity chefs”, and cook books suggest that people continue to value traditional ways of preparing food. Farmers markets selling fresh, locally-produced food continue to be the norm in many parts of the world. In fact, they are growing in popularity in countries such as the UK, where they had virtually disappeared from many cities. This may be partly because cooking with basic, natural ingredients is cheaper than buying processed foods.

Moreover, traditional foods are an important aspect of culture and social life. In many countries, traditional meals continue to be shared in regular family gatherings. Important celebrations such as wedding, Christmas and Chinese New Year are marked by traditionally prepared feasts.

In spite of the utility of convenience foods, people are unlikely to abandon practices that are economically sound and give them great pleasure. It is hard to imagine a world in which people do not continue to enjoy traditional, home-cooked meals at least some of their time. (272)

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Patience is not a good thing; we should take actions at once.

Adults and teenagers alike have to make choices and decisions every day. Some people claim that it is always recommendable(1) to make choices and decisions fast, believing that by doing so people will not miss out(2) valuable opportunities; while others argue that it is always desirable(3) to be patient. As far as I am concerned, there is some element of truth in both sides, but I maintain(4) that to have a satisfying(5) result, people should know when to make quick decisions and when to consider things very carefully. On the one hand, people should make quick decisions and sometimes people who take actions at once are regarded as(6) courageous and wise. Several months ago my mom told me that the price of gold(7) was declining, and she highly recommended(8) me to buy some gold. After verifying(9) the information, I withdrew(10) some of my savings from the bank and bought some gold. Last week, I joyfully found out that the gold price took a steep climb(11) ! Thinking that I could make a big profit, I sold out all my gold without delay(12) . My mom and I are satisfied with the decision because yesterday the price of gold showed signs of declining. If I had not taken actions at once, I wouldn’t have made such a big profit.

From the above discussion, I firmly believe that to simply say that it is always good for us to do things quickly or slowly is too superficial(23) .
