Last week, the 103-year-old Beijinger, as the only candidate from her residential community, was recommended to a higher authority in Beijing‘s Dongcheng District.
Her whole family had kept their fingers crossed that Cao could become the oldest of the 21,880 torchbearers selected across the world.
―We appreciate Cao‘s wish. But in reality, she won‘t be a torchbearer due to her health condition,‖ Li Hua, director of Jingshan sub-district office, told China Daily.
According to Li, the office has received eight recommendations, but only one of these can be passed to a higher selection body.
She refused to reveal any details about how they made the decision, except for saying ―the one we have finally chosen is a Beijing model worker‖.

As is well known, good manners are the basic quality of man, particularly when we are living in a civilized society. Bad manners always have a bad effect on one‘s work and success.
It is well known that China is an ancient country of civilization and courtesy. However, it is a shame that bad manners can often be seen in our daily life. In our school, some students jump the queue while waiting to get their meals in the dining room. Some spit and litter wherever they are. Some make the walls and desks dirty and ugly by drawing or writing meaningless things on them.

The passage tells us a phenomenon that many foreign countries have put up signs in Chinese to remind Chinese visitors to behave in good manners. What‘s more, the author also indicates that good manners are of great importance to the 2008 Olympic Games.
In my opinion, good manners are not only important to one citizen, but also to the whole country and the nation. I still remember that I once came across a really rude and impolite man. At that time, we were waiting for the same bus and the bus finally came. No sooner had the bus opened its door than he pushed onto it. What‘s worse, he knocked down an old man and didn‘t even say sorry! It was really rude and even cruel. This incident not only showed how bad manners the man had, but also told us a serious current situation that some of our citizens lack the sense of being polite.
If the situation continues, it will be a fatal problem to our 2008 Olympic Games and the 2010 Asian Games. So for the sake of our country and the two international Games, do be polite and keep good manners all the time.
