Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today I want to tell you a story about one of my friends, a lovely and smart girl who is always ready to help others. Being our grade leader, she is good at both work and study. In many people's opinion, she is excellent and perfect. But one day she told me she was gloomy and insecure. People around her considered her outstanding and flawless, thinking she could handle everything. But the more she thought about herself, the more disappointed she became. She found that she was far from perfection. Last week, she didn’t do well in her French quiz, and the day before yesterday, she was late for a conference. She felt depressed and frustrated, because she failed to be a perfect girl without any mistakes.
I was surprised to hear that for I thought she had every reason to be confident. However, the expectation of perfection has become a burden to her. I told her no one could be perfect and I suggested she find her own position.
In fact, people are so eager to be perfect that they demand too much of themselves. They want to be special and unique, and they want to have no defects or weaknesses. However, we can never avoid mistakes and errors. It’s impossible for us to be a superman or a superwoman. No matter how successful we are, there are always some flaws. If we hold that everything should be perfect, we would be overcritical.
My friend now has changed her attitude. She accepts her shortcomings but still keeps a positive outlook. She is even more active and doesn’t allow the mistakes to hinder her pursuit of excellence. And I think that’s the way we should be！That’s all. Thank you!

When we are appreciating the passionate melody of Gloria Estefan, we could hardly imagine that she could return to the stage after her paralysis. In the year 1990, this Cuban singer was knocked down in a traffic accident, and the doctor declared that she might never walk again. But Gloria did not give up and kept up constant exercising. Just one year after the disaster, she stood up again and presented this encouraging song at the Atlanta Olympics.
Whenever I think of Gloria, I can’t help recalling my memory seven years ago, when I first entered university. Naturally shy, ordinary looking, average scores in study, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be the least outstanding one in my class. And the successive failures in the 2
beginning led me into despair. ―Am I destined to take the back seat to others?‖ Unwilling to
submit to the fate, I paid more efforts on my study as well as many other activities, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause I just want to catch every little opportunity to prove myself. Constant effort yields sure success. Thanks to the competition, I received some awards and most of all, I gained the courage and confidence to face any difficulties in my life journey.
Life is just like farming, and what you can reap depends a lot on your sowing and
dedication. Once you have a dream, don’t be hesitant. Your next difficult step may be the one to the top. Keep going forward, even in the toughest time, and never give up.

Good afternoon! Today I would like to talk about the importance of keeping optimistic. When we encounter difficulties in life, we notice that some of us choose to bury their heads in the sand. Unfortunately, however, this attitude will do you no good, because if you will have no
courage even to face them, how can you conquer them? Thus, be optimistic, ladies and gentlemen, as it can give you confidence and help you see yourself through the hard times, just as Winston Churchill once said, ―An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity; a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity.‖
Ladies and Gentlemen, keeping optimistic, you will be able to realize, in spite of some hardship, there’s always hope waiting for you, which will lead you to the ultimate success.
Historically as well as currently, there are too many optimists of this kind to enumerate. You see, Thomas Edison is optimistic; if not, the light of hope in his heart could not illuminate the whole world. Alfred Nobel is optimistic; if not, the explosives and the prestigious Nobel Prize would not have come into being. And Lance Armstrong is also optimistic; if not, the devil of cancer would have devoured his life and the world would not see a 5-time winner of the Tour De France.
A rose may be beautiful, or maybe not; that depends on your attitude only, and so does success, so does life. Hindrances and difficulties do exist, but if you are optimistic, then they are only episodes on your long way to the throne of success; they are more bridges than obstacles! Now I prefer to end my speech with the great British poet Shelley’s lines: ―If winter comes, can spring be far behind?‖ Thank you!

China is faced with some enormous challenges as it enters the 21st century. In order to ensure the prosperity of our nation and its future generations we must confront and ultimately solve these challenges.
Some of the more pressing issues facing China are universal. These include
environmental degradation, over population and the effects of globalization.
To overcome some of the things we need to implement include:
Enhancing our scientific and industrial technologies in such areas as IT, Bio- tech, AI and Cybernetics.
Further develop public infrastructure in under developed regions.

Promote education reform at all levels.
Introduce sustainable development initiatives.
The implementation of free trade agreement between China and ASEAN.
The benefit to China in introducing these initiatives will be significant and far-reaching. It is important to realize that these initiatives need to filter down through all elements of the society in China. For instance, cutting edge technologies and intellectual properties; the development of e-commerce based economy; an education system that encourages innovation and creativity; increased foreign investment; higher living standards; more efficient use of natural resources. It is important for us to realize these reforms are both essential and necessary. These will help China to fulfill its vast and unrealized potential on the world stage. It will also contribute more to a globalized world of the new century.
As for the future our task is not to foresee but to enable.

Hello, Dear teachers and fellow students. It is my honor to be here on this beautiful Friday morning to share with you my view on ―Me- time‖.
In my opinion，finding me-time is important. With the development of the modern society, we students in China have more and more pressure. We have to spare every minute to study very hard and join various kinds of out-of-class training courses to improve ourselves. So we are really in lack of me-time which is helpful to keep ourselves from being over-stressed、tired and worried. I do not have as much fun as before and I always miss my childhood. Three hours of
homework and two piano lessons one day make me have hardly any me-time to relax myself. I was once an active basketball player on my school team. But now, basketball, my best friend, I haven’t touched it for almost two months. Me- time seems to have become a luxury.
Last week, when I heard there was going to be a basketball match between our school and No 1 Middle School, I was so excited that I rushed home and told my parents the news. I asked my 9
father, ― Dad, may I play basketball after school ? The coach says I am the best guard in our
school. If I join the school basketball team, we are sure to beat No 1 Middle School this time.‖ My father showed his dispproval and said, ― Of course you can’t . I’m disappointed at you. Why do you have such a silly idea? Don’t forget to work hard on your schoolwork and piano lessons.‖ In my parents’ points of view, playing basketball is a waste of time.
As far as I’m concerned, the school assignment to the junior school students is too heavy. To grow into healthy and well-rounded adults, we should be allowed to have more me-time for relaxation. The pressure put on our students by excessive schoolwork can cause serious stress, which is unhealthy physically and mentally.
My dear teachers, I hope you can assign less homework so we students can enjoy a period of me-time. My dear parents, would you please not follow me and remind me of study all the time? Please trust me that I will do my best. My dear friends, why not stop for a while from your heavy homework and do anything you like? It’s me-time. I do think, that a reduction of the current heavy load would be beneficial to us students and to the society as a whole. Finding me-time will make our life rich, colorful and rewarding.

When I want to turn on the TV、surf on the internet or go out shopping with my friends, my parents always look at me seriously and say ― Don’t forget to spend more time on your lessons. If you don’t cherish every minute of your time, other students will catch up with you.‖
So, every day, every moment, I am overwhelmed by all kinds of assignments. I become more and more silent and can’t sleep well before the exams because I’m dressed and worried about my results. I feel so tired and how I want to have me time to relax myself. I long for a period of time that I could walk in a small path in the countryside, sing my favourite song and smell the essence of nature.
My dear friends, having your own me-time is important. I firmly believe that achievements depend on our health. If we want to have a more harmonious state to work better, we should find more *me time* and keep off the overwhelm stresses. boundless expanse of the Inner Mongolian prairie are living numerous sheep, Cattle and horses, on which our Mongolian have lived for generations. That is why the grassland is eulogized as ―cradle of life‖. There are two vast grasslands in my hometown—Hulun Buir Grasslands and Xilin Gol Grasslands which are both world-famous regions. People in Inner Mongolia are famous for their bravery, enthusiasm and hospitality. I can hadle it
I can never forget the summer in 1996. I went through an extremity of despair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being a
university student would never come true. One evening my father came and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone). Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences ―I tell myself I can handle it .Compared to what others have been through I’m fortunate‖.
Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me. I belived my life would mot be that bad and it was proved to be true. Later during my study in the university I always told myself ―I can handle it‖ when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to my senses.
Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school. Whenever my students complain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them. I 13
just want to make them believe they can handle their difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared to something better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will build up fortitude.
So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us
strength. Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared to what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.
我能挺过去的

I come from one of the most lovely and attractive areas of China, the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province and I'd love to say a few words about this area that is so dear to my heart. Guangdong Province is a magically beautiful wonderland, with endless natural treasures. The lush and green mountains are inhabited by songbirds and exotic animals; the farm land is fertile and productive, providing all of its people with wonderfully nutritious grains and all the fruits they need to be healthy and strong. The Pearl River meanders through the province and eventually comes to our beautiful seashore with crystal clear blue water, flourishing with all kinds of different fish and sea creatures. All these natural advantages help to boost the ever-expanding economy of Guangdong and increase the welfare of its people.
Guangdong is privileged to have such a beautiful landscape, with hundreds of historical sites and places of great interest to local people and foreigners alike. I'm sure, the moment you seat yourself at a Cantonese banquet, your appetite will naturally become keen and eager to taste all the numerous delicacies of the region. Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:
It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.
About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.
While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said ―no.‖ I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. ―Look,‖ he said, ―We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails，but one who never quits.‖
I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition! As it turned out, my dear old professor was right. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!

People around her considered her outstanding and flawless, thinking she could handle everything. But the more she thought about herself, the more disappointed she became. She found that she was far from perfection. Last week, she didn’t do well in her French quiz, and the day before yesterday, she was late for a conference. She felt depressed and frustrated, because she failed to be a perfect girl without any mistakes.

I was surprised to hear that for I thought she had every reason to be confident. However, the expectation of perfection has become a burden to her. I told her no one could be perfect and I suggested she find her own position.
In fact, people are so eager to be perfect that they demand too much of themselves. They want to be special and unique, and they want to have no defects or weaknesses. However, we can never avoid mistakes and errors. It’s impossible for us to be a superman or a superwoman. No matter how successful we are, there are always some flaws. If we hold that everything should be perfect, we would be overcritical.
My friend now has changed her attitude. She accepts her shortcomings but still keeps a positive outlook. She is even more active and doesn’t allow the mistakes to hinder her pursuit of excellence. And I think that’s the way we should be！That’s all. Thank you!

When we are appreciating the passionate melody of Gloria Estefan, we could hardly imagine that she could return to the stage after her paralysis. In the year 1990, this Cuban singer was knocked down in a traffic accident, and the doctor declared that she might never walk again. But Gloria did not give up and kept up constant exercising. Just one year after the disaster, she stood up again and presented this encouraging song at the Atlanta Olympics.
Whenever I think of Gloria, I can’t help recalling my memory seven years ago, when I first entered university. Naturally shy, ordinary looking, average scores in study, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be the least outstanding one in my class. And the successive failures in the beginning led me into despair. ―Am I destined to take the back seat to others?‖ Unwilling to
submit to the fate, I paid more efforts on my study as well as many other activities, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause I just want to catch every little opportunity to prove myself. Constant effort yields sure success. Thanks to the competition, I received some awards and most of all, I gained the courage and confidence to face any difficulties in my life journey.
Life is just like farming, and what you can reap depends a lot on your sowing and

Ladies and Gentlemen, keeping optimistic, you will be able to realize, in spite of some hardship, there’s always hope waiting for you, which will lead you to the ultimate success.
Historically as well as currently, there are too many optimists of this kind to enumerate. You see, Thomas Edison is optimistic; if not, the light of hope in his heart could not illuminate the whole world. Alfred Nobel is optimistic; if not, the explosives and the prestigious Nobel Prize would not have come into being. And Lance Armstrong is also optimistic; if not, the devil of cancer would have devoured his life and the world would not see a 5-time winner of the Tour De France.
A rose may be beautiful, or maybe not; that depends on your attitude only, and so does success, so does life. Hindrances and difficulties do exist, but if you are optimistic, then they are only episodes on your long way to the throne of success; they are more bridges than obstacles! Now I prefer to end my speech with the great British poet Shelley’s lines: ―If winter comes, can spring be far behind?‖ Thank you!

China is faced with some enormous challenges as it enters the 21st century. In order to ensure the prosperity of our nation and its future generations we must confront and ultimately solve these challenges.
Some of the more pressing issues facing China are universal. These include
environmental degradation, over population and the effects of globalization.
To overcome some of the things we need to implement include:
Enhancing our scientific and industrial technologies in such areas as IT, Bio- tech, AI and Cybernetics.
Further develop public infrastructure in under developed regions.
Promote education reform at all levels.
Introduce sustainable development initiatives.
The implementation of free trade agreement between China and ASEAN.
The benefit to China in introducing these initiatives will be significant and far-reaching. It is important to realize that these initiatives need to filter down through all elements of the society in China. For instance, cutting edge technologies and intellectual properties; the development of 25
e-commerce based economy; an education system that encourages innovation and creativity; increased foreign investment; higher living standards; more efficient use of natural resources. It is important for us to realize these reforms are both essential and necessary. These will help China to fulfill its vast and unrealized potential on the world stage. It will also contribute more to a globalized world of the new century.
As for the future our task is not to foresee but to enable.

Hello, Dear teachers and fellow students. It is my honor to be here on this beautiful Friday morning to share with you my view on ―Me- time‖.
In my opinion，finding me-time is important. With the development of the modern society, we students in China have more and more pressure. We have to spare every minute to study very hard and join various kinds of out-of-class training courses to improve ourselves. So we are really in lack of me-time which is helpful to keep ourselves from being over-stressed、tired and worried. I do not have as much fun as before and I always miss my childhood. Three hours of
homework and two piano lessons one day make me have hardly any me-time to relax myself. I was once an active basketball player on my school team. But now, basketball, my best friend, I haven’t touched it for almost two months. Me- time seems to have become a luxury.
Last week, when I heard there was going to be a basketball match between our school and No 1 Middle School, I was so excited that I rushed home and told my parents the news. I asked my father, ― Dad, may I play basketball after school ? The coach says I am the best guard in our
school. If I join the school basketball team, we are sure to beat No 1 Middle School this time.‖ My father showed his dispproval and said, ― Of course you can’t . I’m disappointed at you. Why do you have such a silly idea? Don’t forget to work hard on your schoolwork and piano lessons.‖ In my parents’ points of view, playing basketball is a waste of time.

As far as I’m concerned, the school assignment to the junior school students is too heavy. To grow into healthy and well-rounded adults, we should be allowed to have more me-time for relaxation. The pressure put on our students by excessive schoolwork can cause serious stress, which is unhealthy physically and mentally.
My dear teachers, I hope you can assign less homework so we students can enjoy a period of me-time. My dear parents, would you please not follow me and remind me of study all the time? Please trust me that I will do my best. My dear friends, why not stop for a while from your heavy homework and do anything you like? It’s me-time. I do think, that a reduction of the current heavy load would be beneficial to us students and to the society as a whole. Finding me-time will make our life rich, colorful and rewarding.

May I begin my speech by asking you a question? Do you often feel tired, stressed or worried? If you do have these problems, you are lack of me-time to relax yourself. Psychologist tell us that stress is caused by too much work or study , heavy responsibilities , and quickened pace of life . In my point of view, if you want to have a healthy mind and body, having your own me-time is very important.
Let me take myself as an example. I was a carefree and outgoing girl before I entered the junior high school. I had much me-time and did anything I like after class. I kept a lovely pet and whenever I have time I played with her happily. However, the situation is quite different now. When I want to turn on the TV、surf on the internet or go out shopping with my friends, my

I feel so tired and how I want to have me time to relax myself. I long for a period of time that I could walk in a small path in the countryside, sing my favourite song and smell the essence of nature.

which our Mongolian have lived for generations. That is why the grassland is eulogized as ―cradle of life‖. I can hadle it
I can never forget the summer in 1996. I went through an extremity of despair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being a
university student would never come true. One evening my father came and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone). Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences ―I tell myself I can handle it .Compared to what others have been through I’m fortunate‖.
Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me. I belived my life would mot be that bad and it was proved to be true. Later during my study in the university I always told myself ―I can handle it‖ when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to my senses.
Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school. Whenever my students complain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them. I just want to make them believe they can handle their difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared to something better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will build up fortitude.
So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us
strength. Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared to what others 31
have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.
我能挺过去的
我永生难忘19xx年的夏天。由于我在高考中的失利，我感到了极度的失望，我要成为一名大学生的梦想似乎是无法实现了。一天傍晚，我的父亲来给我讲了一个关于史蒂文·卡拉汉的故事，史蒂文独自驾驶着帆船横渡大西洋，途中船遇难下沉，但是他却活了下来并在76天后被人发现。（他是世界上遇海滩在救生艇中存活最长时间的人了）。后来卡拉汉在他的叙述中写到―我告诉自己一定可以挺过去的，跟别人的遭遇相比，我已经算是幸运的了‖。 听了这些话，我被深深地震撼了，我相信我的生活不会太差而事实也证明了这一点，后来我得到了进入大学学习的机会，在大学学习期间，当我觉得自己的目标似乎遥不可及或者我遇到了似乎无法解决的问题时，我就勉励自己说―我能挺过去的‖而每每念及这句话，我总能有所醒悟。
现在我在一所中学教英语，每当学生们报怨学习的困难或是想放弃时，我就给他们讲卡拉汉的故事，我就是想让他们相信他们可以从困难中挺过去的，因为困境都是相对而言的，有些人比我们更不幸，然后他们就会在自己心中建立起永不放弃的信念。
从这个大难不死的故事中，我们学到了能给予我们勇气与力量的话语，无论你遭遇了什么，都要对你自己说：一定能挺过去的。与其他人的不幸相比，你已经算是很幸运了，要一遍一遍地用此话鼓励自己，这个信念会使你更有信心渡过难关。

Welcome to Guangdong
Ladies and Gentlemen, Honorable Judges, Good afternoon.
I come from one of the most lovely and attractive areas of China, the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province and I'd love to say a few words about this area that is so dear to my heart. 32
Guangdong Province is a magically beautiful wonderland, with endless natural treasures. The lush and green mountains are inhabited by songbirds and exotic animals; the farm land is fertile and productive, providing all of its people with wonderfully nutritious grains and all the fruits they need to be healthy and strong. The Pearl River meanders through the province and eventually comes to our beautiful seashore with crystal clear blue water, flourishing with all kinds of different fish and sea creatures. All these natural advantages help to boost the ever-expanding economy of Guangdong and increase the welfare of its people.
Guangdong is privileged to have such a beautiful landscape, with hundreds of historical sites and places of great interest to local people and foreigners alike. Our capital city, Guangzhou, is also known as "the city of flowers". Everywhere you look you will see flourishing plants and blossoming flowers overflowing with vigor.
The people of Guagdong are very friendly to visitors from anywhere. Whoever you are and wherever you come from, Guangdong people will greet you with the only
language---Guangdong dialect.
Guangdong is also known as the Chinese capital of delicious food. There is an old saying that "The only best delicacies are in Guangdong.‖ Food from this province is internationally
famous. Its variety of tastes, shapes and colors can satisfy even the most refined palette. I'm sure, the moment you seat yourself at a Cantonese banquet, your appetite will naturally become keen and eager to taste all the numerous delicacies of the region. Here are but a few I will mention in passing: steamed fish in ginger sauce, seasoned chicken, drunken shrimp, dance fish balls, fried jellyfish, roast suckling pig or duck, braised crispy chicken or squab, shark fin soup, moon cakes, refreshments and desert, and so many more. My mouth is watering just at the sound of these wonderful dishes.
I would like you all to know that there is truly nowhere in the world I would rather live and I invite you all to come discover the hidden treasures of my hometown. I would be glad to serve as your personal guide.

Me and my Fears
Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:
It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Saturday morning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the English language.

About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.
While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said ―no.‖ I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. ―Look,‖ he said, ―We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails，but one who never quits.‖
I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition! As it turned out, my dear old professor was right. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!

尊敬的评委，各位来宾，女士们先生们，我很荣幸在这个美妙的星期六早上来到这里，与你们分享我生命中一段特别的经历。
大概一年半以前，我参加了生平第一次演讲比赛。站在麦克风前，面对观众们期待的眼神，我竟紧张的说不出话来。那一刻，我是多么无助啊！
我对于英语的挚爱从未改变，但却从此失去了面对公众演讲的勇气。当老教授鼓励我参加希望英语风采大赛时，我拒绝了。他直视我的眼睛，说了一番令我终身难忘的话。―你 35
瞧，‖他说，―我们都有自己的恐惧。你可能会在一场篮球比赛中扭脚，并从此害怕再打球。你只能用行动去克服自己的恐惧，逃避是没有用的。生活中的成功者往往是永不放弃的人。‖ 我花了一整天时间思考他的话。 然后，我做出了一个勇敢而明智的决定： 我要参加中央电视台第五届―希望之星‖英语风采大赛！
老教授是对的。我发挥出了自己的水平，一路杀进了全国总决赛。此时此刻，当我再一次站在了麦克风前，仍然心跳不止，但更重要的是，我终于能够勇敢地面对我的恐惧了，而这已足够了。
