A primary school has banned Valentine's Day cards because of concerns that young pupils spend too much time talking about boyfriends and girlfriends.

Ashcombe Primary School in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, has told parents that cards declaring love can be “confusing” for children under the age of 11, who are still emotionally and socially developing.

In his February newsletter, Peter Turner, the head teacher, warned that any cards found in school would be .

He wrote: “We do not wish to see any Valentine’s Day cards in school this year. Some children and parents encourage a lot of talks about boyfriends and girlfriends.”

“We believe that such ideas should wait until children are mature enough emotionally and socially to understand the commitment involved in having or being a 4

boyfriend or girlfriend.”

Mr. Turner said any families wanting to support the Valentine’s Day concept should send cards in the post or deliver them to home addresses by hand.

His views were endorsed by Ruth Rice, 46, who has twins Harriet and Olivia, nine, at the school.

She said: “Children at that age shouldn't really be thinking about Valentine's Day, and they should be concentrating on their schoolwork.

“They are at an age when they are easily influenced and most parents including myself are with Mr. Turner.”

She added that the cards cause too much competition. If someone gets a card and another doesn't then someone will be disappointed.

However, Rajeev Takyar, 40, who runs a local newsagent, and has two children Jai, 11, and Aryan, five, at the school, said he was “genuinely outraged”.

He said: "There are schools that have banned conkers and snowballs, and now Valentine's Cards.

"I think banning the cards stops children from having social skills. How are they going to learn about relationships otherwise? It's ridiculous.”

Alec Suttenwood, founder of the Anti-Political Correctness group, said of the ban: “It's totally ridiculous. Young children just send the cards to each other as friends and to their parents. It’s just a bit of harmless fun. There is no difference between this and Mother’s or Father’s Day.”

If cars had wings, they could fly and that just might

happen, beginning in 2011.The company Terrafugia, based

in Woburn, Massachusetts, says it plans to deliver its

car-plane, the Transition, to customers by the end of 2012.

“It’s the next ‘wow’vehicle,”said Terrafugia vice

president Richard Gersh. “Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but

as we say, Ferraris don’t fly.”

The car plane has wings that unfold for flying—a process the company says takes one minute—and fold back up for driving. A runway is still required to take off and

The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, although it is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations.

The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as a more convenient and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble from trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports: You drive the car to the airport and then you’re good to go. When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don’t have to store it at an airport—you park it in the garage at home.

The car-plane is designed to fly primarily under 10,000 feet. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers. Terrafugia says the Transition reduces the potential for an accident by allowing pilots to drive under bad weather instead of flying into marginal(临界)conditions.

The Transition’s price tag: $194,000, But there may be additional charges for options like a radio, transponder or GPS. Another option is a full-plane parachute. “If you get into So far, the company has more than 70 orders with deposits. “We’ re working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps,” Brown said.

Internet use appears to cause a drop in psychological health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.

Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more bad feelings and loneliness than those who was online less frequently, the two-year study showed. Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.

The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in psychological health, researchers hypothesized (推测). Faceless, bodiless “virtual”(虚的) communication may be less psychologically 6

satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.

“But it' s important to remember this is not about the technology, it' s about how it is used,” says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study' s sponsors (发起人). "It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology."

63. What had the researchers expected before the research?

A. The Net may account for the drop in psychological health.

B. Internet use may improve psychological health.

C. Internet use has nothing to do with psychological health.

D. Spending much time on the Internet makes people feel bad and lonely.

64. What does Christine Riley, the psychologist, suggest?

A. It's necessary to take social factors into account in designing applications and services for technology.

B. It's important to tell the users how to design and apply the technology.

C. Compared with social factors, the technology itself has more influence on the Internet users.

D. No social factors should be considered in applications and services for technology.

65. Which of the following would be the most appropriate title for the passage?

A. How to Use the Internet B. Disadvantages of the Internet

C. Social Factors and the Internet D. Internet May Cause Bad Feelings

九、任务型阅读:

Hearing a child say their first word is magical moment. Children are eager to learn, and the more they are encouraged, the more they will try. Giving children encouragement and finding different ways to enhance(增强) speech development can greatly build their vocabulary. Here are some tips on how to encourage speech development:

Early encouragement

It is essential to speak to a child from their newborn stage. By speaking to babies early on, they will gain a better understanding of language. Pronounce words clearly so that children can grasp the spoken word. This will help them learn to speak.

Positive words

Children engage(参与) more when it is fun and interesting, and when their efforts are acknowledged. Be positive by giving recognition when new words are learned, and emphasize(强调) how exciting these moments are. Positiveness goes for 8

with children, and is advantageous to their self-esteem and development. When a word is spoken that isn’t completely clear or is mispronounced, it should be repeated clearly. Never pay too much attention to mistakes, and instead strengthen correct pronunciation by repeating the word directly after the child.

Reading

A fun way to encourage speech development is by sharing books with children. Reading aloud to a child introduces them to new words and ideas. Books can be read in a engaging way to capture young minds and this draws them into the story.

Singing

Children are often enticed(吸引) by music, as it grabs their attention and attracts their interest. Singing nursery rhymes will often encourage speech development, as children tend to be able to learn and memorize the words when sung. There are many different nursery rhymes that make youngsters smile. When learning is fun and engaging, children show more interest and absorb more information. Singing is a great way to encourage speech development.

Communication

Always make eye contact when speaking to a child to hear how the words are pronounced. Use key words several times to emphasize these words. Repetition is important to help encourage speech development. Facial expressions and gestures, as well as tones are just as important to provide understanding. Acknowledge their efforts and attempts to speak, and repeat words slowly to allow them to follow the mouth movements. Make sure that you discuss events as they point to objects and say what they are. Children will carefully listen and absorb all of the information they are given.

Learning to speak and communicate with others is very important and a fun journey for the child. Every parent adores the sound of their baby babbling(牙牙学语) and looks forward to their first words. But this development does not happen by

As is known to all, the internet is becoming more and more popular in our daily life. Nowadays Chinese netizens tend to be younger than before and they have many chances to visit websites with bad contents which are harmful to them. In order to protect them from this harm, sixty mothers were selected from a large number of mothers to form a “Mom Jury” in Beijing. Their responsibility of the activity was to report bad websites, give the government advice, urge the government to take measures, and so on. The activity was so effective that many bad websites were closed a month later.

In my opinion, it is a good way to deal with the problem , but Dads should also take part in the activity, because the fight against bad websites calls for a joint effort by both parents. It is also important to teach teenagers how to protect themselves while surfing the Internet.
