一、 all 的否定式:not all…(或:all…not)表示"并非都……"、"不是所有的都……" Not all men can be masters. (= All men cannot be masters.) Not all bamboo grows tall.

二、 both 的否定式:not…both (或:both… not) "并非两个…… 例如:

I don't want both the books.

Both (the) windows are not open.

Not every book is educative. (或:Every book is not educative.) Not everyone likes this book.

This flower is not seen everywhere.

He is not always so sad.

The businessman is never to be entirely trusted.

He felt not altogether satisfied.

I don't agree completely.

What he did was not quite proper.

六、 all the time 的否定式:"并非一直……"、"未必老是……" 例如:

A foolish man doesn't make a mistake all the time.

七、 not…and…

He did not speak clearly and correctly.

This film is not interesting and instructive.

She cannot sing and dance.

He did not speak clearly or correctly.

如要对上述的all, both, every, always, 以及entirely, altogether, completely, quite 和 all the time 等词作完全否定,那就分别要用与之相对应的全否定词,如no, none, neither, no one, never, not (never)… at all 等。例如:

All of them can do it.--- None of them can do it.

Both are good.---Neither is good.

Everybody likes it. ---Nobody likes it.

He is always late. --- He is never late.

We don't trust them entirely. --- We never trust them at all.

He was here all the time. --- He was never here.

所以"to father a child",也就是"to beget a child"

①There is not much furniture in the office.

②There are not many furnitures in the office.

a piece of, a cup of, a drop of, a lump of, a handful of, a flash of, a blade of, a head of, a bar of, an ear of等。

two pieces of, three cups of 和 five lumps of 等。

① Mr Li has just bought a piece of new furniture.

② Give me a cup of cold water, please.

③ Please put two lumps of sugar in my coffee.

④ The boy picked up two handfuls of sand from the beach.

⑤ We saw a flash of lightning in the sky.

⑥ The gardener pulled out blades of wild grass from the garden.

⑦ She gave bars of chocolate to the visiting children.

有些名词如 scissors, trousers, spectacles, tongs, pliers 等,都以复数形式出现, 如: ⑧ The scissors are lying on the table.

⑨ The spectacles fit me nicely.

⑩ Mary has just bought a pair of scissors.

现代英语注重简洁,合成形容词便应运而生,其中有一种是用来表示数目的,方法是: “数目+名词”,如:a five-year plan, a ten-dollar note, a two-hour meeting, a three-day conference等。

如果用复数,就错了,如: a five-years plan, a ten-dollars note, a two-hours meeting, a three-days conference.

a five-year plan→a plan of five years

a ten-dollar note→a note of ten dollars

a three-day conference→a conference of three days 等。

为什么不能说a black new pen,而是说成a new black pen?

如果你记住Opshacom这个为帮助记忆而杜撰的词,就能掌握英语中形容词排列的顺序。 Opshacom中p代表opinion,指表示人们观点的形容词,如beautiful,horrible,lovely,nice等;

sh代表shape,指表示形状的形容词,如long,short,round, narrow等;

a代表age,指表示年龄、时代的形容词,如old,new, young等;

c代表colour,指表示颜色的形容词,如red,black, orange等;

o代表origin,指表示国籍、地区的形容词,如British,Canadian,German等;

"Anne acts quite unfriendly." "I think she's____ than unfriendly."

[A] shyer [B] shy [C] more shy rather [D] more shy

1. He is more bold than intelligent.

2. The boy is more kind than brave.

3. The teacher was more happy than angry at the news.

4. She was more annoyed than worried when they didn't come on time.

5.The wall was in some places thicker than it was high.

It's most kind of you to say so.

1. They had the most delightful time of their life there.

They had a most delightful time there.

2. The scenery here is the most picturesque in this neighborhood. The view from the mountain top was most picturesque.

3. It is the most dangerous trick to play with fire.

It is a most dangerous trick to play with fire.

The house is building.(房屋在建造中。)

The book is printing.(书在印刷中)

The house is being built.

The book is being printed.

Browning's plays won't act.

The meeting adjourned at five o'clock.

Tomatoes bruise easily.

This belt won't buckle.

My voice doesn't carry well.

Enamel wares clean easily.

This box doesn't close properly.

These apples cook well.

This metal cuts easily.

The pipe does not draw well.

Nylon dries quickly.

This material does not dye well.

It eats well.

The hall soon filled.

Damp Wood will not fire.

This wheat grinds well.

The brake does not grip properly.

This car handles well.

Damp clothes iron easily.

Will this meat keep till tomorrow?

Mosquitoes kill easily when incubating.

The flat lets for 30 yuan a month.

The match lights easily.

The door won't lock.

The cow milks well.

These books pack easily.

These potatoes peel easily.

Ripe apples pick easily.

That drama will play.

This poem reads well.

His voice records well.

The verses scan smoothly.

That play screens badly.

His new novel is selling well.

The window won't shut.

Some kinds of wood split easily.

Some kinds of food soon spoil.

This linen c1oth spots easily.

White clothes stain easily.

The damp match won't strike.

This paper tears easily.

Not every idiom translates with such ease. The cloth washes well.

This material won't wear.

The door won't open.

也有人认为像his books don't sell这种句子的动词在形式上是主动的,意义是被动的,实际上是his books are not sold的意思。

1a. The middle house won't let.

1b. The middle house will not be let.

2a. His plays won't act.

2b. His plays will not be played.

3a. She does not photograph well.(不上照)

3b. She has not been photographed well.(照没有拍好)

Eg. The door won't lock.

谈another, other, more修饰数词的用法

If you want to change for a double room you'll have to pay ____ $15.

A.another B.other C.more D.each

一、another

1. —Have you finished your report yet?

—No,I will finish it in 10 minutes.

A.another B.other C.more D.less

(NMET'95第27题key:A)

2. The strike may last another three days.

3. There is room for another few people in the back of the bus.

4. I'll be here for another few weeks.

二、other

1. Tony is going camping with ____boys next Sunday.

A.little two other B.two little other

C.two other little D.little other two

(NMET'93.第11题key:C)

2. Mr Smith asked me to fetch three other recorders.

3. Do you know where he found the other two photos?

三、more

(1)She has got five more electric fans.

(2)One more step(One step more),and I'll shoot you.

(3)Where shall we be in ten more years?

2. more除跟数词外,还可与a little,a few,a lot,several等词连用,而且名词也可是不可数名词。如:

(1)I'd like to buy a few more copies of English Weekly.

(2)There are many more dictionaries on the desk.

(3)Would you like some more tea?

1. I climbed the stairs slowly,carrying a big suitcase,my father following with two more.

2. I have had one cup of coffee,but I'd like another.

3. I should like to have many more(books).

(1)运动动词 go,come,drive,fly,travel,arrive,leave,start,set off及表示位置的动

He is coming to New Jersey.

They are not going back to work until they get a rise.

I'm seeing my guest off at the station tomorrow.

The court is hearing evidence this afternoon.

He is forever boasting.

You are always doing well.

The child was jumping with joy.

I'm seeing a lot of Joan at the library.

We are hoping you will get well soon.

What were you wanting?

What were you doing before you came here?你来这儿之前做些什么工作?(这比What did you do…?

相当于nearly do/be on the point of doing…。如:

I'm forgetting(=nearly forget)that I promised to take you to Shanghai.

He was believing what the cheat said.

My watch is working perfectly.

状态动词be的进行时态(be being)后面接行为形容词,如 brave, careful, stupid, clever, foolish, polite, kind和shy等时为主语所表现的非一贯性特点或故意的行为。如: You are being very clever today.

He is being polite.

如: The wind was rising.

I think the cat's going mad.

You are telling me.

You are wasting time!

By the time he was ten,Edison was already doing his experiments in Chemistry.

One car after another is speeding by on the freeway.

1. no better than:表示“和……

He is no better than a beggar.

The invalid is no better than he was yesterday.

He has no better a say in the matter than I have.

2. not. . . any more than或no more. . . than:表示“同……

I could no more do that than you. I could not do that any more than you.

He is not a poet any more than I am a scholar. This story is no more interesting than that one. He is no more able to read German than I am.

3. not so much. .

He is not so much a writer as a reporter.

Your explanation does not so much enlighten us as confuse us.

Oceans don't so much divide the world as unite it.

I don't so much dislike him as hate him.

There is nothing like home.

There is nothing like walking as a means of keeping fit. There is nothing like leather for shoes.

5. nothing like(或near)as(或so)... as:表示“远远不像……那样”

This novel is nothing near so interesting as that one. The book is nothing like as difficult as I expected.

His analysis of the poem is nothing like as penetrating as yours.

6. no less … than:表示“和……一样”

He is no less active than he used to be.

His mind is no less alert than yours.

Our soldiers fought with no less daring than skill.

1. know better than+不定式。

She knows better than to go alone on such a night.

know better than to do sth.的含义是be wiser, better informed,or more sensible than to do or believe sth.

I am wiser than to believe that.

You have a better command of French than to make such mistakes.

He is more experienced than to do such a thing.

2. more than…can。

The boys in the street have become very insolent and it is more than flesh and blood can bear.

The beauty of the place is more than I can describe.

This is more than I can tell.

He has bitten off more than he can chew.

3. 用the last,the least等最高级形式表示强烈的否定意义,如:

He would be the last man to say such things.

This is the last place where I expected to meet you.

That was the least of his worries.
