A

Even when you’re extremely busy, you aren’t using your time with 100% efficiency. There are gaps in everyone’s schedule where they aren’t doing anything important. Even if your schedule has no gaps, there is probably lots of time where you aren’t working as fast or as effectively as you possibly could.

Why aren’t you completely efficient? It’s because time isn’t the limiting factor. If it were the limiting factor, people could work non-stop without breaks or any unproductive distractions(消遣). Instead, people, even those who are highly productive, need to take breaks, occasionally procrastinate(拖延) and slow down on tasks throughout the day.

The real and most important limiting factor for productivity is your energy levels to pay attention. Energy levels limit your productivity because when you’re tired,

you can have ample time and still not get everything done. Your attention ability is also limited, because even if there are a million things that need to be done, you can only focus on one or two at a time.

You might not be able to insert another 4-5 hours into your schedule without making some sacrifices(牺牲). But even extremely busy people can add an hour or two into their schedule without cancelling anything. The reason it’s hard to “find time” isn’t a lack of time. It’s because you don’t have enough energy left to focus on something else that needs to fit into your day.

I first suspected time wasn’t the real problem during an extremely busy period in my life over a year ago. I was insanely busy, but at that time I still exercised regularly. I had daily to-do lists with over twenty items, and I still found time to exercise. However, after a few weeks off, due to illness, I stopped exercising. I was not busy by any standards, in fact, my schedule was incredibly light. Despite this free time, I found it hard to find time to exercise. It seemed to get pushed later and later into my schedule until it was gone. How can I explain this odd experience? I believe you have known it.

26. If someone can’t work with 100% efficiency, the most important limiting factor

is ________.

A.a schedule without gaps B.breaks and distractions

C.the limited time D.the limited energy

27. According to paragraph 4, everyone, including the extremely busy people, can

___________.

A.work without any rest B.focus on many things at a time

C.find some more time in a day D.do some exercise regularly

28. After a few weeks off, what was the change of the writer’s life?

A.He had a longer daily to-do lists with over twenty items.

B.He stopped doing exercise because of the lack of energy.

C.He found it hard to find time to exercise because he was busier.

D.He pushed most of the things later and later in his schedule.

29. The writer gives the example of himself in the last paragraph in order to ___________.

A.prove what the real limiting factor is B.show us how busily he needs to work

C.explain how important a healthy body is D.tell us what an odd experience he has

30. What is the best title of the passage?

A.Are You Really Lack of Time? B.How Can You Work Efficiently?

C.What Makes Your Energy Limited? D.When Should You Do Exercise?

B

Outside our hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a seemingly ancient woman waited beside the door with her hand outstretched. Every day I put my hand in hers as our eyes met. She never failed to return my smile, my grasp, and my greeting. On the last day of our visit, I found myself alone on a busy corner across the

street from our hotel. Bicycles and motorbikes rushed in front of me. As I hesitated on the sidewalk, I felt a hand on my elbow and looked down to see the smile of my small beggar friend looking up at me. She nodded her head toward the street, indicating that she would take me across. Together, we moved slowly into the chaos.

Then we moved on toward the sidewalk, where she pulled my face down to hers, kissed me on both cheeks, and then left, still smiling and waving back to me.

Traveling in poorer nations, I have witnessed a variety of ways to deal with beggars. The most common response of tourists faced with the poverty-stricken is to ignore them and focus their eyes elsewhere. I have seen people push away an outstretched hand in angry annoyance. A few may drop a few coins into the hand in a hurry, hoping that other ragged pursuers won’t immediately appear on the scene.

For many reasons, giving money is not the best response to an outstretched hand. Many world travelers have discovered that the greatest gift they can give is their time and respect. Everyone needs recognition, to be seen as worthy of being known, to feel appreciated and loved. And I believe that everyone is worthy and worth knowing.

31. The woman beggars helped the author go across the busy street because __________.

A.the author gave her material assistance B.the author treated her kindly and friendly

C.the author would help her as a reward D.the author was a foreigner

A.pretending to see nothing B.handing out some money

C.refusing them angrily D.greeting them normally

34. According to the author, the most important things beggars really need are _________.

A.mercy and pity B.money and food C.smile and greeting D.attention and respect

35. The purpose of the passage is to _________.

A.show how poor the beggars are in Vietnam

B.offer some advice on dealing with begging

C.express what we should offer the beggars

D.describe an experience with a beggar

C

As I grew older, Dad was to build all sorts of things for me as I explored a variety of interests: magic tricks, a toy circus, neighborhood shows and science projects. From as early as I can remember to the time I left home for college, I continued to come to him with a design or an idea, and he would figure out how to build it. In fifth grade, a schoolmate and I wrote a puppet (木偶) show that we wanted to

perform for our class. I made the puppet heads myself, and I made the costumes and curtains with Mon---who was as expert designing and sewing with cloth as my father was designing and working with wood and metal. With Dad I made the puppet stage, in our own invented style between kid and adult with me saying something like, “ It has to be this high, and it needs to come apart and fold up so it can fit in the backseat of the car, and it needs to set up fast, and it needs to have different colored lights on top with switches you can reach to control them and a curtain you can pull from under it, even if you still have a puppet on your hand.” Dad figured out how to make it all work, making plans as we went along. Then with the tools in his shop he built it, and I helped.

Dad also spent a lot of time out in the garage or in the driveway working on the family car. I don’t remember that he ever took it to a professional auto-repair shop. Maybe to save money, but also because he could usually figure out what needed fixing, just by taking it apart and looking. Though not trained as an auto mechanic, he could look under the engine cover and take parts and pieces out, spread them on a tarp (油布) to catch the oil and figure out what was supposed to happen to the machine and then figure out what wasn’t happening and then replace the worn-out part or whatever and then put everything back together again.

36. If you are the writer, you are supposed to write about ________ahead of the first paragraph.

A. father’s achievement in mechanics B. father’s love and skills in mechanics

C. father’s experience at repairing cars D. father’s inventions in mechanics

37. Who helped the writer to make the puppet?

A.The writer himself. B.His classmate. C.His teacher. D.His parents.

38. Before the writer went to college, he always turned to his father for _____________.

A.designing a machine B.building his design or idea

C.making a puppet show D.building a show stage

39. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.The writer’s car is always breaking down. B.Father works in a car repairing shop.

C.Repairing in a shop can save much money. D.Father was good at mending his car.

40. The purpose of the writer’s writing the passage is ______________.

A.to tell how his father made a puppet for him

B.in memory of his parents

C.to describe to the readers his memories about his father

D.to argue that parents should help children to explore the world and make inventions

D

From bankers to factory staff, employees in the West face a cold prospect of losing their jobs as a global recession(衰退) starts to bite. For colleagues in the East, the pain is more likely to come through a pay cut.

Human resource experts say cultural differences explain why Asian companies try harder to preserve jobs in difficult times, which will prevent unemployment and may help Asian economies survive at a time of slowing exports. The East Asian attitude may also make it easier for companies to recover quickly from the economic downturn since they will not need to rehire or train new staff, but build up a more loyal and devoted group.

“In the Confucian mindset(儒家思想), the right thing to do is to share the burden, which is the sense of collective(集体的) responsibility. While in the West, it’s more about individual survival,” said Michael Benoliel, associate professor of organizational behavior at Singapore Management University (SMU).

In contrast, local Western companies from General Motors to Goldman Sachs plan to lay off workers by the thousands, but at the Asian units of Western multinationals or western units of Asian groups, job cuts will probably be less severe.

Japan’s jobless rate was 4 percent in September, up from 3.8 percent in January, while Hong Kong’s was flat at 3.4 percent. But US unemployment is expected to have jumped to 6.3 percent last month from below 5 percent in January.

Experts say that while there are noticeable differences in labor practices in East and West, the gap will narrow as more firms become more multinational and competition forces firms to adopt the best practices of rivals from abroad.

41. The underlined word “prospect” in the first paragraph most probably means _________.

A.weather

_________.

A.it’s helpful to the economy recovery

B.it costs the company less money to survive

C.it will keep the experienced and skilled workers

D.it can form a team working harder and more loyally

43. According to Michael Benoliel, the Confucian mindset focuses on _________.

A.human rights

C.personal profits

A.A local American group.

B.A small Japanese company.

C.A German branch of a Korean multinational.

D.A Hong Kong’s unit of a French company. B.sharing responsibility D.individual survival B.scene C.future D.place 42. Compared with job cuts, pay cuts can bring the following benefits EXCEPT that 44. In which company can we infer the job cuts will be probably the most severe?

45. The passage mainly tells us ________.

A.the difficulties all the companies around the world will meet with today

B.the cultural differences between Eastern and Western world at present

C.the ways to cut down the cost of the companies in economic downturn

D.the different labor solutions of Asian and Western in global recession

46. Where did this most popular day for couples come from? And how does it come

into beings, year after year? Noel Lenski, professor of the University of Colorado, said the lovers’ holiday traces its roots to raucous annual Roman festivals held every year on February 15 and remained wildly popular well into the fifth

century A.D.

47. The first Earth Day in 1970 was a raucous, radical teach-in that helped spur

clean-air, clean-water, and endangered species legislation in the United States. Now, 40 years later, Earth Day is every day, as the saying goes. The thing is, it’s also everyday - environmentalism has become a routine with green-ness as much a marketing tactic as a moral pursuit.

48. Some 242 million turkeys were raised in the U.S. in 2010 for slaughter,

according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Last year’s birds were worth about U.S. $3.6 billion. Before the big dinner, debunk the myths, we need to know that the first “real” U.S. Thanksgiving wasn’t until the 1800s and get to the roots of Thanksgiving 2010.

49. Father’s Day traditionally takes a backseat to Mother’s Day, and, for the most

part, dads are cool with that, experts say. Nevertheless, as traditional roles around the house gradually change, fathers are gaining more attention on their special day, at least as measured in the monetary value of gifts estimated to be given on June 19, 2011, when the holiday will be celebrated in dozens of countries.

50. Cookouts, fireworks, and, of course, a chance to wish Uncle Sam a big “happy

birthday” —the day means summer in full swing across the United States and beyond. Besides the founders of the US, Fireworks, first authorized by Congress in 1777, are another legacy. More than 14,000 fireworks displays light up U.S. skies each year.

Recently I entered one office of our company, seeing a co-worker(同事) head on his arms. She was really upset. We began talking about work issues and the topic quickly turned into her daughter, her mother, her husband and her personal life. I just sat and gave her my full attention. This went on for about 20 minutes. Finally, a smile came to her face and she said, “Why is it that I can always talk to you?” What I know is that I gave her my full attention and listened.

Listening is an important part of helping someone. It is different from hearing. Most people can hear but listening is a learned skill. You have to stop thinking about yourself and put your attention on the person talking. I believe if you really listen to one another, many situations could be changed. It means you give another person the chance to have him heard. To me, this is an important way to help others and it does make a difference.

1. 概括短文的内容要点,该部分的词数大约30左右;

(1)你觉得聆听为什么是对别人的一种帮助;

1、Editor,

I’m writing to tell you about the road construction which is going to take place in our city. Recently the local government has decided to broaden some narrow roads to build BRT, which has caused a heated discussion among the local people.

Some agree that we should carry out the construction project because it can solve some traffic problems and make our life convenient and comfortable. Besides, it helps promote the economy and improve people’s living environment as well as the image of Shantou as a modern tourist city in the southeast of Guangdong province.

But others believe that the construction work may cause air pollution and traffic jams may appear now and then. What’s worse, the people who are against the construction think that the noise produced by the work will disturb people’s peaceful life.

The author listened to a co-worker talking about her life with full attention recently, because he believes that listening is an important way to help others and it makes a difference.

Like the author, I can’t agree more that listening is a very important way to help others. In my opinion, when people have something unhappy in mind, they will feel more comfortable if they can talk with others. So if we can listen to them, their feelings may become better.

If I have a friend who faces problems in life and needs to talk with me, I will try to be a good listener for him. Because being a friend, I think I should do my best to help him out and listening is the best way at this time. After listening, I will comfort him, try to find out what problems he has and give him some advice to solve them.
