1)As a boy and then as an adult, I never lost my wonder at the personality that was Einstein. He was the only person I knew who had come to terms with himself and the world around him. He knew what he wanted and he wanted only this: to understand within his limits as a human being the nature of the universe and the logic and simplicity in its functioning. He knew there were answers beyond his intellectual reach. But this did not frustrate him. He was content to go as far as he could.

Homework 2 The Fox and the Stork

狐狸和鹳

The fox one day thought of a plan to amuse himself at the expense of the Stork, at whose odd appearance he was always laughing. 一天狐狸想到了一个以损害鹳来娱乐自己的计划,狐狸经常嘲笑鹳古怪的样貌。

“You must come and dine with me today,” he said to the Stork, smiling to himself at the trick he was going to play. The Stork gladly 7

accepted the invitation and arrived in goodtime and with a very good appetite.

For dinner the Fox served soup. But it was set out in a very shallow dish, and all the Stork could do was to wet the very tip of his bill. Not a drop of soup could he get. But the fox lapped it easily, and, to increase the disappointment of the Stork, made a great show of enjoyment.

狐狸晚餐准备了汤。但是汤放在一个非常浅的盘子里,鹳最多只能用汤润一下自己的嘴尖,不能用嘴再往下伸得到更多的汤了。但是狐狸却轻松地舔着,并且为了增加鹳的失望感,狐狸显出一副非常享受的样子。

The hungry Stork was much displeased at the trick, but he was a calm, even-tempered fellow and saw no good in flying into a rage. Instead, not long afterward, he invited the Fox to dine with him in return. The Fox arrived promptly at the time that had been set, and the Stork served a fish dinner that had a very appetizing smell. But it was served in a tall jar with a very narrow neck. The Stork could easily get the food with his long bill, but all the Fox could do was to lick the outside of the jar, and sniff at the delicious odor. And when the Fox lost his temper, the Stork said calmly:

“Do not play tricks on your neighbors unless you can stand the same treatment yourself.”

读书

也许,我是天生喜欢文字;也许,文字天生是我的宿命。我躲不开文字的影子,也不想躲避。这世上的很多事,很多情结,似乎都有渊源;而我的渊源却是文字。

我深深地知道:文字是语言的灵泉,枯燥得似乎没有一点味道,不像茶水可以品;不像烈酒浓郁得可以醉。我常常奚落自个,书里的味道真的且香且甜吗?因此,每每饿着肚子的我,禁不住对五谷杂粮情有独钟,心想还是膳食来的实在。可是,一顿狼吞虎咽之后,我丢下手里的碗筷,又拉直了眼睛,瞅来瞄去:

“书书……我的书呢?!”

“你的书摞在这了。”

听到母亲的应答,我连忙奔去。我看见:母亲手里攥着书,瞪着眼睛,一副又烦又恼的样子。我悠忽地皱了眉,咧咧嘴,敛着脸,不知所措。 9

随后,母亲冷不丁嫣然一笑,“嗬嗬”了起来。我刹那间猛地欣喜释怀,抢了书,闪过身一溜烟地跑掉了。

Of studies(关于学习)的翻译

琴匣人生

我人生的转折点是我决定放弃一份大有前景的工作转而学习音乐。当 12

时虽然父母有成人之美,并且在音乐上和我有共鸣,但是他们不赞同我以此为业。这从我的家庭背景出发是可以理解的。祖父在莫比尔斯普林希尔学院教了将近四十年的音乐,虽然深受左邻右舍爱戴和尊敬,但是他挣的钱不足以养活一大家人。父亲经常说要不是祖母精打细算、勤俭持家,我们早就穷困潦倒了。由于家里有祖父这样一个例子,一提及以音乐谋生,浮现在脑海的是因收入不稳导致吃了上顿没下顿,生活颠沛的情况。父母坚持要我上大学而不是音乐学院。这样我就上大学了——我记得大学生活相当快乐!虽然我喜爱小提琴并且花了大部分课余时间练习,但是我还有其他兴趣爱好啊。

还没来的及从哥伦比亚大学毕业,我家庭经济就每况愈下。我感到自己有责任离开学校去谋求工作。就这样我被迫进入了生意场。

如果我还在生意场,今天我可能相对而言颇为富裕,但是因此我认为人生失败。因为我可能因此放弃那些无形的东西、放弃那金钱永远买不到的心灵满足感。当一个人以逐利为人生目标弃那些美好东西不顾,那他牺牲太多了。 金钱真是个好东西,但是为了得到它付出的代价昂贵。

Yang Fujia had discussed with Yale University President Levin why so many Yale alumni returned to their alma master, most of them are graduates. Levin’s answer was simple: because they believed the school had changed their life.

Levin cited an example of an American 8-year-old child. One day of class, the child said to the teacher, “you write the word misspelled.” The teacher said, “Really? Let me check the dictionary.” The child immediately said, “Do not check, I guarantee you misspelled.”

The child not only had not been criticized by daring to question the teacher, but was praised by parents and school principals.

Yang Fujia specially felt which different from the department of Chinese and American cultures: American children came home from school, parents will ask:Today how many questions you asked; while Chinese children after school, parents will ask: Today how many points you got in 24

the test.

男人和女人之间寿命的差距

一个世纪以前,美国男性在数量和寿命上都高于女性。但是在20世纪,女性开始活的时间更长,主要原因是因为怀孕和分娩变得不再那么危险。差距逐渐在扩大,19xx年,美国第一次出现女性数量超过男性的情况。

差距出现的部分原因是自身造成的。男性比女性抽烟更多,喝酒更多和承受了更多的危及生命的事情。男性被谋杀(通常被另一个男性谋杀)的几率是女性的3倍,男性自杀的概率居高不下,他们出车祸的几率超过女性的2倍,男性更容易被卷入和酒精相关的灾祸中。 但是行为不能解释寿命之间的差距,现在揭晓答案。

在20世纪50年代,当心脏病让男性成为越来越多的受害者时,人们将此归咎于办公室里的压力。医生说,让女性冒险走出家门去工作,她们死亡的几率将和男性一样。但是一件有趣的事情却发生在去葬礼的路上。

在19xx年和19xx年之间,有工作女性的比率几乎增加了两倍。一些研究表明,那些工作的女性和在家呆的女性一样健康。

如今,一些科学家通过研究性别差距的资料得出一个结论:自然母亲 25
