The process by which bricks are manufactured for the building industry can be outlined in seven consecutive steps. First the raw material, clay, which was just below the surface of soil in certain clay-rich areas has to be dug up by a digger.

　　Then the lumps of clay are placed on a metal grid in order to break up the big chunks of clay into much smaller areas, which fall through the metal grid onto a roller, whose motion further segregates the bits of clay. Sand and water are added to make a homogenous mixture, which is then either formed in moulds or cut into brick-shaped pieces by means of a wire cutter.

Those fresh bricks are then kept in a drying oven for at least 24 and a maximum of 48 hours, several dozens if not hundreds of bricks at a time. The dried bricks are then transferred to a so-called kiln, another type of high temperature oven. First they are kept at a moderate temperature of 200 ℃ -1300 ℃ . This process is followed by cooling down the finished bricks for 48 to 72 hours in a cooling chamber.

　　What’s worthy of being mentioned is that fierce competition in Place N and probable monopoly in Place M should also be taken into account when building the supermarket.

As is displayed in the first diagram, the life cycle of the silkworm can be categorized into 4 main stages. First, the life of the silkworm starts from eggs propagated by the moth, and it takes 10 days for each egg to become a silkworm larva that feeds on mulberry leaves. Silkworm larva continues to grow in 4 to 6 weeks, then wrapping itself with silk thread to construct a cocoon in the next 3 to 8 weeks. A moth can be produced from the cocoon in 16 days. The life cycle begins again from then on.

　　Focusing on the second diagram, it illustrates the 5 main steps of the procedure of producing silk cloth. Well generated cocoons will be selected firstly. Before the silk thread can be unwound, cocoons have to be boiled in hot water. One cocoon can produce approximately 300 to 900 metres of silk thread. The unwound thread will be dyed afterwards to be weaved into silk cloth.

The given graph indicates the procedures of glass bottle recycle by three main stages.

According to the table, various glass bottles are gathered in the collecting site and then transported to the cleaning station at the very beginning. Then it comes to the second stage where the bottles are washed by the high pressured water, after which they are categorized into Brown, Green as well as clear groups based on their color. After that, bottles are delivered to the recycling plant where the prepared bottles are burned in furnace with high temperature into liquid glass for recycle. Next, the recycled liquid glass along with new liquid glass is shaped into bottles again through glass moulds. Finally, the newly produced glass bottles are launched into the customer supermarket, till this point, the process of glass recycle is finished completely.

1. The chart describes how water is obtained outdoors.

2. According to the figure, the first step of obtaining water outdoors is to find a hole with green plants on its bottom. Next, remove the green plants in the middle and put a container there. Then, cover the hole with a plastic sheet and place two stones on both ends of it to secure its position. A third stone is laid on the middle of the plastic sheet so that the middle part is also the lowest part.

3. When the sun shines on the green plants in the hole, water evaporates from these plants. The vapor rises up and then cools down to form water drops on the plastic sheet. When there is more and more water, it flows along the sheet to accumulate on the lowest part. Finally, water falls down into the container directly under the middle stone. Thus, water is collected successfully through evaporation from green plants.

The diagram below shows how a central heating system in a house works.

The diagram illustrates the working process of a house’s central heating

system which provides not only water but also heating throughout the house. First of all, cold water is introduced in the ceiling of the house and is then stored in a water tank in the upper section of the house. The second stage is that the cold water flowing through the overflow pipe which is attached to a storage tank to the boiler where the water is heated. Meanwhile, the cold water also flows to the taps that provide hot water. Pipes pass through the storage tank which enables water to recycle, and pipes to the water tank in the ceiling allow the storage tank to be refilled.

In order to provide hot water and heat for the house, there is a boiler below the storage tank for gravity feed. When water passes through the boiler, it is heated up and then flows to hot water radiators placed around the house. Water will be forced into the recycling pipes and fed back to the boiler as it cools. A pump is located below the boiler in order to allow for the upward movement of water.

第一、要用好表示顺序的连接词(Sequencing Words)

既然是流程图，就不可避免的要说明过程的各个步骤和先后顺序，在这里，大家要注意几个词。例如，表示过程我们通常用“process”或“procedure”，过程的各个阶段和步骤我们可以用“stage”或“step”来描述。在谈到第一个步骤时我们可以用连接词“In the first place”、“To begin with”、“In the first stage”等引出。在进入中间的步骤时可以用“Then”、“Next”、“After this/that”等，最后一个步骤可以用“Finally”或“Lastly”。当然，如果有一些平行的步骤我们也可以用“At the same time”、“Meanwhile”等来引出。

以上这些词如果用的太频繁也会使文章显得较为单调，我们可以使用从句的方法使各个步骤的描写自然地衔接在一句话中。例如

When the cleaning is done, the bottles are conveyedto a glass factory where they are cut into glass pieces which are then poured into a furnace.

上面的句子用了when/where/which三个连词，就把玻璃瓶回收的三个步骤”cleaning- cutting –heating巧妙地连接在了一起。

第二、要学会使用被动语态

流程图写好的第二个关键是被动语态的使用。流程图表现的是客观的工作流程或事物发展的过程。因此，我们可以尽量避免用“We should/must/need to do sth.”的主动语态，改为“Sth. Should/must/needs to be done”这样的被动语态。被动语态和情态动词的恰当搭配，可以使文章显得更具有客观、和学术化色彩。
