National Grandparents Day is an American holiday celebrated to honor grandparents. It is on the first Sunday after Labor Day (the first Monday in September). This day is a chance for people to express their love to their grandparents. Some families invite their grandparents for a special meal. Others send gifts or cards or make a phone call to their grandparents far away. Children invite their grandparents to school where they take part in joyful activities.

The holiday originated with a housewife in West Virginia. In 1970, Marian McQuade started a movement to set aside(留出) a special day for grandparents. Social organizations, business houses, churches and political leaders joined her cause. She aimed at educating the youth about the important contributions of the elderly to the society. She wanted the youth to pay attention to the old people living in nursing homes.

In 1973, Governor Arch Moore of West Virginia announced that Grandparents Day was a state holiday, so West Virginia became the first state to celebrate the holiday. Then Mrs McQuade and her team continued to work to make the movement a nationwide success. They turned to the media to gain support. They also sent letters to government officials, churches, businesses, and many national organizations. In 1978, former US President Jimmy Carter announced the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The national holiday was first celebrated across the United States one year later.

Mrs McQuade and her husband headed a very big family tree, which includes 15 children, 43 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Joe McQuade, her husband, was the behind-the-scene support for Marian. After 60 years of a happy married life, Joe passed away in March, 2001. My father did well in his business and he wanted me to get a good job and live a comfortable life. But I didn’t want that. I wanted adventure(冒险)and an exciting life.

However, my parents were very unhappy about my thoughts. So, I tried to forget about the sea. But I couldn’t forget, and about a year later, I saw a friend whose father had a ship. He told me he was sailing to London tomorrow and asked me to come with him.

On September 1st, 1651, I went to Hull, and the next day we sailed for London. But, a few days later, there was a strong wind. The sea was rough and dangerous and I was very ill, and very scared. The next day the wind dropped, and the sea was quiet and beautiful again. Encouraged by my friend, I forgot about the danger and decided not to go home. I didn’t want my friends and family to laugh at me!

I stayed in London for some time and I had nothing to do. So, when the captain of a ship asked me to go with him to Guinea in Africa, I agreed. And so I went to the sea for the second time. It was a good ship and everything went well at first, but I was very ill again. Then, when we were near the Canary Islands, a Turkish pirate(海盗)ship came after us. They were famous thieves of the sea at that time. There was a long, hard fight, but when it finished, all of us on the ship became prisoners.

The Turkish captain and his men took us to Sallee in Morocco. They wanted to sell us as slaves in the markets there. But in the end the Turkish captain decided to keep me for himself, and took me home with him. This was a sudden and terrible change in my life. I was now a slave and this Turkish captain was my master.

Who says honesty is dead? Last Tuesday morning Alan Reed, a student, was at the bank. He asked to take out $50 but the bank clerk mistakenly gave him five twenties instead of five tens. For a few seconds he wondered what to do. Should he give the extra money back? Keep it? If he kept it, he could buy several new books, or he could take his friend Alice to a fancy dinner. Probably no one would ever notice. Besides, this would make up for all the times he’d been overcharged. But then he looked at the clerk. She was a middle-aged woman with a sweet face, and she reminded him of his mother. She had been nice to him, and she looked pressured in her work. Then it occurred to him that the lady would probably get in trouble. Worst of all, Alan felt he would probably feel guilty about keeping the extra cash. So Alan gave back the money. The bank clerk was so impressed that someone was honest enough to return the money which didn’t belong to him that she contacted the newspaper. So there you have it.
