Alice’s mother died when she was 5. Although her brothers were loving and caring, they were no replacement(替代) for mom. Alice, who grew up to become my mother, told me as a child her family couldn’t even afford to buy her a doll.
Because of everything she didn’t have, Alice cared for others, hoping to make up for her sad childhood by doing all she could for her family. But an unfilled loneliness still remained.
Many years later, we were decorating the tree one December afternoon in the bank where now I’m working in preparation for Christmas. One of my customers(顾客) walked up to me with beautiful hand-made dolls. She was taking orders for Christmas. I decided to get one for my 5-year-old daughter Katie when I had an idea. I asked my customer if she could make me a special doll for my mom, a doll with gray hair and glasses. She felt this was a good idea and she took it on as a challenge.
Things really started to fall into place when a friend told me this dad would be willing to make a visit on Christmas morning dressed as Santa Claus, to deliver my Katie her gifts! Knowing my parents would be with us as well, I got ready for what would turn out to be one of the most memorable days of my mother’s life.
Christmas Day arrived, and so did Santa. My mom was enjoying watching Katie’s reaction to Santa’s visit when he took out one more gift. Santa handed the doll to my mom, and a short message that read:

June is always a sad time for Senior 3 students. After taking the big test, they separate to realize their dreams in different ways. It’s really a hard time when students have to say goodbye to carefree high school days and close friends.
People always say that teenage friendships are the most valuable. Kids are too young to understand real friendship while adults easily relate it to reputation and wealth.
Things are different with high school best friends. We share each other’s secrets. We discuss news from all of life and begin to shape our values. We support each other on the journey to the biggest challenge in our lives. We also share success and failure. The seeds of friendship become deeply rooted.
Many of us don’t realize this until we enter society. One of my friends, Yang Ping, experienced how strong the connection with high school friends can be. “it was my high school friend who helped me get through the darkest days in my life,” said the 27-year-old.
In 2011, Yang Ping lost her job in Beijing. Her best friend was staying in a college dormitory and took her in. Each night the two girls squeezed(挤) into a narrow single
bed, chatting and crying. “I’ll never forget her care and encouragement, which supported me out of the darkness,” said Yang.
I still remember my last days in Senior 3. At the time, I exchanged a 20-page message with my best friend, both of us hoping to keep the friendship going forever. But we didn’t realize we were already deep in each other’s heart. During the past 10 years, whenever I’ve needed help or wanted to pour out my unhappiness, she has always been there at the other end of a telephone line.

Much meaning can be expressed clearly with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak. Do you have such kind of experience? On a bus, you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he is feeling that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.
It is the same in our daily life. If you are looked at longer than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down, to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward other’s stare at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to stare at the other sex. If a man stares at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to look away, his intentions are obvious, that is, he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he likes her.
However, the normal eye contact for two people in a conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking and tell him that he is attentive.
If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to control you, you will feel . A poor liar usually is seen through by looking too long at the listener, since he believes in the false idea that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. Quite the opposite.
In fact, continuous eye contact is limited to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time, to show love that words cannot express.
Obviously eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the specific situations.
62. If a man looks at a man for more than 10 seconds, it means that _____.
A. the woman will feel happy B. the woman will feel angry
C. the man wants to get the woman’s attention
D. the man will then look away from the woman
63. Which of the following is likely to be a liar according to the passage?
A. A man who enjoys looking at his lover tenderly.
B. A lady who looks at a strangely dressed boy on a bus.
C. A boss who looks at his employee from time to time when speaking.
D. A man who looks straight into the eyes of his listener for too long.
64. The underlined world “” means _____.
A. honored B. excited C. embarrassed D. disappointed
65. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Eyes can express different meanings.
B. It’s possible to tell whether someone is lying.
C. Follow certain rules when you are in love.
D. A good speaker know when to look away.

第一节 阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写在试卷相应的位置(请注意每题的词数要求)。 Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have been only a few players who are truly great. How do these players get that way—is it through training and practice, or are great players “born, and not made”?
First, these players come from places that have had famous stars in the past—players that young boys can look up to and try to . With these models in mind, the boys then copy their behavior and as a result, some finally achieve success. In the history of soccer, only 8 countries won the World Cup—three from South America and 5 from Europe. There has never been great national team or a really great player from North America or Asia.
Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game. Alfred Di Stefano is the son of a soccer player, as is Pele. They begin playing the game at the age of three or four.
Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighbourhood—a poor and crowded area where a boy’s dream is not to be a doctor, a lawyer or a businessman, but to be a rich, famous athlete or star. For example, Liverpool, which produces the Beatles, has one of the best English soccer teams in recent years. Pele practices in the street with a “ball” made of rags(破布).
All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn’t explain why they are great. Hundreds of boys played in most Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. In fact, the greatest players are born with some unique(独特的) quality that makes them so great and special.
