第三部分阅读理解(共20 小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A

Finally, I entered the university. Because of my careful savings, I did not have to work during the school year. Then, summer came and it was time to work harder than ever. I continued working as a waitress at night, instructed tennis camps several mornings a week and worked as a secretary for a few hours in the afternoons. I even decided to take a class at a community(社区)college. This class at the community college saved me $650. It was an extremely tiring summer and made me anxious to return to my relatively easy life at the university.

During my second and third years of undergraduate schooling, I decided to work about five hours per week in the campus(校园)admissions office answering phones. This provided a little spending money and kept me from drawing my savings out. The overall situation looked hopeful as I approached my senior year as long as I could make as much money as I had the previous summer. I wanted to go to Israel to study for 3 weeks, but I hesitated in making this decision because it would cost me $1,600 more to get the credits in Israel. About two weeks later my Mom called to tell me that I had $1,600 in the bank that I had forgotten about! One of my concerns about this trip was not only the cost, but the loss of time to make money; however, I made as much that summer in the ten weeks when I was at home as I had made during the fourteen weeks when I was at home the summer before. The way everything worked together to make this trip possible was one of the most exciting things that have ever happened to me.

This experience has shaped me in many important ways. The first thing that I learned was the importance of a strong work ethic (伦理). Working long hours did a lot to develop my character and helped me learn the value of a dollar. It also made me learn how to search for creative ways to settle difficult situations.

The James Dyson Award winners for 20## have been announced, and the grand prize winner is a machine. Edward Linacre of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne has tapped the Namib beetle(纳米比甲虫)—a desert creature that survives in the extremely dry conditions on Earth—to create an irrigation system that can pull liquid straight out of dry desert air.

Airdrop, as the system is known, borrows a trick from the Namib beetle, which can live in areas that receive just half an inch of rain per year by harvesting early morning fogs from the air that gathers on its back during the early morning hours. Its skin helps to collect water drops passing in the wind, which then become liquid water.

Airdrop mimics this idea, in a larger amount, though. The self-powering machine pumps water into a network of underground pipes, where it cools enough for water to condensate (凝结). From there the water is delivered to the roots of nearby plants. Linacre’s math shows that about 11.5 milliliters can be harvested from every cubic meter of air, and further development could raise that number even higher.

Such a system as Airdrop could provide regular water to plants being grown in the world’s driest areas. And because it is low cost and self-powered, the $14,000 award from Dyson (Linacre’s university also gets an additional $14,000) should help speed that along.

60. What does Airdrop have in common with the Namib beetle?

      A. It has a useful irrigation system.

62. The underlined word“mimics”(in Paragraph 3) most probably means ______.

A. ignores       B. refuses        C. copies          D. recommends

63. We can infer from the passage that ______.

      A. Linacre will share the prize of $14,000 with his university

      B. farmers in the dry areas will benefit little from this invention

      C. Airdrop will be further improved and become more effective

      D. all kinds of costs of Airdrop will become higher and higher

Langston Hughes is usually thought of as a poet. But he also wrote novels, plays, short stories, essays, autobiographies, newspaper columns(栏目), children’s books, and the words to operas. He also translated into English the works of foreign poets.

From his childhood, Langston Hughes developed a love of reading books, which grew into a desire to write. He wanted to reproduce the powerful effect other writers had made upon him.Among the early influences on his writing were poets Walt Whitman, Carl Sandburg and Paul Lawrence Dunbar.

One day, the poet Vachel Lindsay ate in a hotel where Hughes was working. Hughes put some poems he had written next to Lindsay’s dinner plate. Lindsay gave a poetry reading later that night. He read some of Hughes’s poetry, too. Newspapers across the country wrote about Lindsay’s poetry reading. Hughes became known as a new black poet.

A year later, Hughes returned to New York. Through the years he lived in many places, but always came back to New York’s Harlem area. Harlem was the center of black life in New York City. Hughes’s creativity was influenced by his life in Harlem.

Langston Hughes returned to New York during a period called the Harlem Renaissance. It took place during the nineteen-twenties and thirties. The Harlem Renaissance was a period of great artistic creativity among black people. For the first time, black artistic style was being widely recognized. Hughes became friends with other great black writers of the time, such as Claude McKay, Countee Cullen and Zora Neal Hurston. They hoped that great art could change the racist ideas in America about African Americans.

Hughes was considered one of the leading voices of the Harlem Renaissance. He was the first poet to use the rhythms(韵律)of black music. He often wrote about the everyday experiences of black working people. And he helped bring the movement of jazz and the sound of black speech into poetry.

Langston Hughes experimented with his writing. Other Harlem Renaissance writers wrote traditional poems like those of English classic poets, such as William Shakespeare. Hughes broke free with his writing and helped change literature forever.

64. What can we learn about Hughes’s childhood?

A food additive is any substance (物质) that is added to food. Many people are put off by the idea of “chemicals in food”. The truth is that all food is made up of chemicals. Natural substances like milk, as well as man-made ones like drinks on sale in the market, can be described by chemical formulas (分子式). Some chemical substances are indeed harmful, but a person who refused to consume any chemicals would find nothing to eat.

The things we eat can be divided into natural and man-made substances. Some people feel that only natural foods are healthy and that all man-made ingredients (原料) are to be avoided. But many natural chemicals, found in plants and animals, are harmful when eaten, and some laboratorymade substances increase the nutritional value of food Other chemicals have natural and man-made forms that are exactly alike: vitamin C is vitamin C, whether it comes from a test tube or from an orange Like “chemical”, “man-made” doesn’t necessarily mean “not fit to eat”.

Food additives are used for many reasons. We add sugar and salt and other things to foods we prepare at home to make them taste better. Food producers have developed a range of additives that stabilize, thicken, harden, keep dry, keep wet, keep firm, or improve the appearance of their products. Additives can make food more convenient or nutritious, give it a longer shelf life, and make it more attractive to the consumer, thus increasing the sales and profits of the producers.

Food additives are presently the centre of a storm of serious argument. Food producers have been known to use additives that have not been proved safe; some substances in common use have been proved unsafe and have been taken off the market. Many people feel there’s a risk of eating food to which anything has been added. But food additives are now regulated by the FDA of the federal government, and new additives are subjected to strict testing before they can be placed on the market. For most people, the chances of developing serious side effects from the long-term use of presently approved food additives are very slim.

72. From the passage we can learn that______. 

A. all foods consist of chemical substances

B. it is right to reject chemicals in food

C. food additives are harmful to our health

D. natural foods are much safer than man-made ones

73. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

   A. Foods with more additives have higher nutritional value.

   B. To ensure food safety, the FDA will ban food additives.

   C. Foods free of additives can keep a much longer shelf life.

   D. Food additives can improve the quality of foods in many ways.

74. We can infer from the regulation to the food additives by the FDA that______. 

   A. new additives will be approved more easily than before

   B. food producers won’t be allowed to use new food additives

   C. food with common-used additives will be taken off the market

   D. food additives will be used in a safer and more scientific way

75. According to the writer, the food additive is ______.

   A. worrying              B. acceptable           C. poisonous             D. avoidable
