What did you like best about this book?

First, it is definitely a romantic love story. The love between Darcy and Elizabeth impressed me most. Disliking each other in the first place, they finally changed their point of view and even their personalities, at the end got married. Completely moved by the story, I cannot help reading it again and again. Also, the process they came to love reminded me that tolerance and understanding make the world beautiful.

Supposing that Darcy stick to his pride and Elizabeth continued to be prejudice, what is the ending of the story?

Second, the tone of the story is refreshing. The author chose an ironic and comedic writing style rather than the traditional formal and strict, of which I think highly. The way she wrote totally reveal a social attitude---money and status are everything. The writer criticized it in a funny way, which attracts readers’ attention and deepens their interest in reading.

Lastly and most importantly, the theme of the book has heightened my thought. In the book, anxieties about social connections, or the desire for better social connections, interfere with the workings of love. Darcy and Elizabeth’s realization of a mutual and tender love implies that love is something independent of social forces, unrelated to wealth and social status. This point of view reminds me to our own society. With the development of market economy, many people throw away their traditional moral, pursing fame and fortune, at which I am sad. Reading Pride and Prejudice at the present is of great importance for us, helping to find our good nature deep inside.

What did you dislike about this book?

Honestly speaking, the book is so nice that it’s hard to tell which part I dislike. I f there is something I have to say, it may be what she wrote was restricted in a small circle, only in a round of people, a certain area, which may bore some readers. Besides, I think the words she used in the book are quite pale, lacking of beautiful phrases and sentences. Perhaps some readers will also complain about it.

Would you tell a friend to read this book? Why?

Without doubt, I will introduce the book to my friends.

First, the book gives a vivid expression of the reactionary and traditional country life and people’s minds during 18th centuries and 19th centuries in Britain to us,

broadening our visions as well as leading us to think about our social tendency. Only by reading and thinking can we promote our thought.

Second, there are also many editions of films adapted from the book. After reading, my friends and I can watch the movies, communicating with one another about different feelings after reading and watching.

Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen’s world-famous novel Pride and Prejudice has been one of the best-sellers with a wide praise since it was published in 1813. This book was a booty won by Jane after a protracted war of revising and rewriting it again and again. The process of her creation varied like the evolution of the story itself. However, heaven helps pays off, Jane finally succeeded in making it a great masterpiece, leaving us a good present and influencing all the readers deeply.

Pride and Prejudice has impressed all the readers with its tortuous plot and distinctive characteristics of the characters. The main character Elizabeth Benet was born in the countryside, and she was the second one of the five daughters in her family. Her father was a gentleman, but her mother was frivolous, who dreamed of becoming rich by marrying her daughters to wealthy men every day. The whole story began with the shocking news that the Neitherfield Park is let at last by a Mr. Bingley, who was wealthy and young. On the ball held by Mr. Bingley, Elizabeth’s elder sister, Jane Benet, who was beautiful and as practical as Elizabeth, began to grow close with Mr. Bingley as her mother had expected, but it was opposed by Mr. Bingley’s sister, who considered Jane and her family social inferior. And at the ball, Elizabeth had a bad impression on Mr. Darcy, the best friend of Mr. Bingley, because of his haughty rejection to have a local dance with her.

At the same time, Elizabeth developed friendship with a solider called George

Wickham. He told Elizabeth that Mr. Darcy had mistreated him in the past, so Elizabeth began to hate Mr. Darcy more. However, Mr. Darcy had been deeply attracted by her after some contacts.

When everyone thought it was time for Mr. Bingley to propose to Jane, Mr. Bingley left suddenly and made no attempts to contact Jane. It confused everyone and made Jane heartbroken. At the same time, Elizabeth firmly refused Mr. Collins’ proposal, a relative of her family. To her surprise, her close friend Charlotte Lucas decided to marry him out of the worry that she would become a burden to her family rather than love. After their marriage, when Elizabeth paid a visit on Charlotte at the estate of lady Catherine De Bourgh, who was Mr. Darcy’s aunt, she encountered Mr. Darcy. Soon, on a rainy day, Mr. Darcy proposed to her, which really shocked her. However, Elizabeth refused him immediately and firmly. She questioned his mistreatment of Mr. Wickham and why he separated Jane and Mr. Bingley. After Elizabeth’s accusations, Mr. Darcy was deeply shaken. Before leaving for home, Mr. Darcy wrote a letter to justify himself. He told that George Wickham had once proposed to her sister in order to get his fortune. And he separated Jane and Mr. Bingley aiming at protecting Mr. Bingley, because Elizabeth’s mother and younger sisters showed great interest on Mr. Bingley’s fortune. After reading this letter, Elizabeth found she had misunderstood Mr. Darcy’s characteristic, and she would have loved him as much as he loved her.

Months later, when Elizabeth was touring in Mr. Darcy’s estate with her aunt and uncle, they were well treated by Mr. Darcy, which made Elizabeth believe that Mr. Darcy still loved her. However, right at that moment, they were informed that Elizabeth’s youngest sister, Lydia, had eloped with George Wickham, who had no plans to marry Lydia at all. It caused great trouble to her family. In Elizabeth’s opinion, it completely ruined her relationship with Mr. Darcy.

Soon after Elizabeth got home, Lydia and George Wickham were found and got married thanks to her uncle. When they made a visit home, Elizabeth got to know that it was no one else but Mr. Darcy who spent a lot of money to find her sister, and paid for her wedding on the name of her uncle. Then Mr. Bingley returned here to propose to Jane. Jane was happy and accepted it. However, it caused the rumor that Mr. Darcy would propose to Elizabeth, which made Mr. Darcy’s aunt Lady Catherine angry and forced Elizabeth to promise not to accept Mr. Darcy’s proposal with insulting words. However, Elizabeth refused bravely. From it, Mr. Darcy believed that Elizabeth had changed her prejudice about him, and proposed to her

immediately. This time, Elizabeth agreed happily. Later, though Mrs. Benet was still frivolous and Lydia and George Wickham left debts everywhere for Elizabeth and Jane to pay, Elizabeth still lived happily with Mr. Darcy.

Until now, Pride and Prejudice has won a wide appreciation for almost 200 years, mainly on the basis of its penetrating themes. The critics analyze that it mainly shows three themes, that is Love and Marriage; Good breeding and Social rank; Moral belief and Behavior. Of them, Love and Marriage is regarded as the most important one. However, in my opinion, Moral belief and Behavior plays a rather more important role through the whole story. It is Moral belief and Behavior that makes an unexpected beginning, a contradictable climax, and a happy ending.

Also, it’s Moral belief and Behavior that shows the difference between Elizabeth and her mother and younger sisters. Elizabeth is practical and honest. Her mother and younger sisters, on the contrary, are frivolous and narrow-minded. At the same time, it shocks me that according to society’s belief at that time, all females should be elegant, dependent, and too shy to reveal themselves. All the females should obey the social belief unconditionally and firmly, especially the females in lower social status. For example, when Elizabeth refused Mr. Collins’ proposal, he just put it down to her being female and said, “…that young ladies reject the addresses of the man whom they secretly man to accept… it is an established custom of your sex to reject a man on the first application…it is consistent with the true delicacy of the female character…”

However, their behavior was so ridiculous that they didn’t realize when they behaved according to the so-called social belief; they were in fact also going against moral belief. For example, when attending the ball, Mrs. Benet and her daughters pretended to be elegant, educated; but when staying at home, they indulged themselves in gossiping silly, lying lazily, and making room dirty. They exchanged between two different characteristics at an unbelievable speed, right? At the same time, Elizabeth’s close friend Charlotte chose to marry Mr. Collins, who made everyone disgusting, merely because she was afraid that others would laugh at her for she hadn’t got married at the age of 27 and that she might become a burden to her family. She just tried to find a man, no matter who he was, to account on and stop others’ ridicule. Her marriage wasn’t based on love, but on her worry, her dependence, and her horror to social belief. All her rest life would be ruined, because of her dependence and horror. Also, Jane was too shy to reveal her love to Mr. Bingley. When Mr. Bingley left, she could only cry and suffer the heartache alone.

Not only the females in this book, but also all the females at that time, had to behave under the pressure of social belief, but twisted their own characteristics in turn. It’s nothing but stupid for them to sacrifice themselves to prove the sacredness of social belief.

It’s wrong of you if you think only the poor in lower social status had a dark dot in their moral belief. The rich people in higher social status were not perfect, either. Some of the people in higher social status in appearance were much lower in moral belief or characteristics. For example, Lady Catherine. She was both haughty and impolite on the basis of her wealth and social standing. She asked for others’ respect, but showed no respect to others. And she foully thought that all the poor had a greedy desire for money.

During that time, the society was driven by money, but not moral belief. Most of the poor tried to get money to free themselves from poverty, and the rich tried to make more money to promote their social status. Money, instead of moral belief, had deplorably become the theme of society.

What’s more, it’s money that caused the misunderstanding between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, because a lack of money made Elizabeth and her family seem petty and low, even immoral. However, morality has differed Elizabeth from her mother, and Mr. Darcy from his aunt and at last made it possible for them to have a happy future. Mr. Darcy had a lot of money, but he showed no haughtiness. On the contrary, he was polite, upright, and moral. It’s true that he made a bad impression on the strangers, but it’s because of his good morality, for he was not as convivial as other wealthy people. There were a lot of obstacles in front of the love between the poor and the rich, but Mr. Darcy never gave up his love to Elizabeth. He didn’t care others’ criticism, as long as he loved Elizabeth and Elizabeth loved him. Elizabeth had no money, but she was a winner in living during that time. She set a good example for the females living at that time. She didn’t run after money like a slave of money. For instance, she hated wealthy people who were haughty. If Mr. Darcy was rich with conceit, she wouldn’t accept him, and if Mr. Darcy was poor with good morality, she would love him as much as she could. And this is right where Elizabeth’s shining point lies. Her good morality has led her to become a sincere lover.

Morality is a serious problem not only at that time, but also today. It plays an important role all the time. Someone without a right moral belief will surely meet difficulty here and there. It’s true that a right moral belief won’t make everyone as

rich as Mr. Darcy, but it will help everyone get happiness. For example, Elizabeth

and Mr. Darcy behaved according to their own moral belief, so they thought it

shameful to be money’s slaves, and they could get happiness at last.

By Pride and Prejudice, the importance of morality is engraved on my heart.
