When I first saw the name “Great Expectation “ I feel that I was familiar with it. Actually I have seen the movie before. It was written by an English writer in the 19th Century-Charles Dickens, in a quite sarcastic way. When I was reading the novel, it felt as I was connected with the character.

Here, I want to share two characters in this novel who impressed me most. The first is the main character: Pip, who was an orphan living with his sister and uncle Joe. His sister was fierce but his uncle was kind. Pip enjoyed living with him and liked playing with his friends in his hometown. He was satisfied with his life and definitely want to be a blacksmith as his uncle. But when he met a girl named Estelle, everything changed. He began to compare with her and want to change his destiny. He becomes unsatisfied with his life and desire better education. His life began to be controlled by other people.

I feel sympathetic to Pip. As a poor child. He was very easily to be influend. His wrong choice bring a big tragedy to him. I feel sorry to the ending of this novel.

Second I want to introduce Miss Havisham. One sentence to conclude her is: rich in material life but poor in inner world. She was very pathetic as she was cheated by her dear family and lover. She didn’t trust anyone and felt lonely. No one respect her by heart. She even didn’t have a friend. What a pity that a people don’t have a friend. I think that is the life make Miss Havisham become such indifferent.

Great Expectation, which is a book written by Charles Dickens, a famous writer from England.When I first heard the name of this book, I thought that why did the author make this name, what a story did the book will tell, maybe it described a boy experienced a hard childhood and finally became strong and decided to do a successful business, but all of these were only my guess before reading Great Expectation.It’s not important, let us enter the theme now.

The character in this masterpiece left me the deep impression is Pip. Pip was brought up by his sister who was unpleasant as well as crude and her friendly blacksmithhusband—Joe.Joe himself had arranged a common hard but satisfied path for Pip to go through, and on the other hand, Pip beheld this as his highest goal to achieve. Later, Pip fell in love with Estella. He studied as hard as he could. He educated himself for Estella. Why did he love Estella so much? Just for her beautiful face? Does it because she is pretty? She is rich? She is proud? In fact, I think Pip pay out so much for the love.She didn’t treat him well and even that she didn’t respect him at all! She put the food for him as a dog,but he didn’t hate her. On the contrary, he left his home and his friends. He just wanted to be a gentleman. Then he became a gentleman without question

at the price of losing everything.He abandoned a lot than he got. I can’t understand why he did it in this way. I thought it’s not worth at all. If one person doesn’t like you or not respect you,you needn’t do everything for her. Money can be easy to earn, reputation also can be easy to establish, but both of them can’tbuy respect.

“We are friends,” I said , taking her hand.

“And we will continue being friends even when we are apart,” said Estella.

We walked, hand in hand, out of the old garden. As the morning mist had risen long ago when I first let the forge, so the evening mist was rising now, and in the clear moonlight,I saw no shadow of another separating from her.

The conversation and one paragraph above this paragraph is the last part of Great Expectation, this part beautifully expresses the feeling between Pip and Estella and create a complete ending.

Finally, I should say, from now on,we need to learn how to deal with money, power and reputation, but it doesn’t mean we need to abandon our initial ambition to be a high class person, if you use the true way to get it, it’s okay. Besides, never stop your improving steps, one day, you may have your own great expectation.
