《Ulysses》

Ulysses

Ulysses

Yesterday, I read one poem Ulysses, which was written by British poet Lord Alfred Tennyson, who was one of the most representative poets of the Victorian Age and remained one of the most popular poets in the English language. Ulysses made a deep impression on me and I concluded three main points from it.

First and foremost, the poem Ulysses was written soon after the death of Tennyson's friend Arthur Hallam, it was one of many lyrics that Tennyson wrote in memory of his friend. Through the words of protagonist Ulysses, Tennyson expressed the painful sad of losing his best friend, and grief was never an easy burden to bear. "All times I have enjoy'd/ Greatly, have suffer'd greatly, both with those/ That loved me, and alone".

Meanwhile, in the final stanza, "...you and I are old;/ Old age hath yet his honour and his toil; so/ Death closes all; but something ere the end,/ Some work of noble note, may yet be done,/ Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods." Senescent Ulysses encouraged the mariners with whom he has worked, traveled, and weathered life’s storms over so many years. Although they were getting old, they still had the potential to do something noble and honourable before "the long day wanes". "Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'/ We are not now that strength which in old days/ Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;/ One equal temper of heroic hearts,/ Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will/ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield." Ulysses heartened his companions to make use of their rest of the life and declared that his goal is to sail forward “beyond the sunset” until his death.

Ulysses and his mariners were not as strong as they were young, however, they were "strong in will" and were sustained by their resolving to push forward relentlessly: "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."

The last but not the least, while there is life, there is hope. "Come, my friends./ It is not too late to seek a newer world,/ Push off, and sitting well in order smite/ The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds/ To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths/ Of all the western stars, until I die." Ulysses was an old man but he still devoted himself to fighting for a brighter future. In contrast with Ulysses's lofty aspirations, young people's suicide cases became so pale and satiric. Life was short and precious, but these youngsters chose a path which there no turning back. Life is the capital of the revolution and never give up as long as we have breath.

All in all, Ulysses like many of Tennyson’s other poems, was filled with the desire to reach beyond the limits of one’s field of vision and the worldly details of everyday life. The poem’s final line "to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield" was regarded as a motto for the poet: the poem’s hero Ulysses and the author were all longing to flee from the tedium of daily life and fighting for a brighter future.
