Duke:Young man

Would you step inside a moment please?

Henry:Call me,sir?

Duke: Yes,you

Olive: Go the front door,on your left

Henry:Thanks.

James:Good morning .Would you please come in?

Permit me to lead the way.

The young gentleman,sir.

Duke: Thanks James. Nothing with you.

How do you.Mr.?

Henry: Henry.

Duke:How do you sit down,Adams?

Henry:Thank you.

Duke:You are an American Mr.Adams?

Henry:That’s right.From New England .

Duke:How well do you know London?

Henry: Not at all,sir.

Duke:I wonder,Mr.Adams,if you mind I ask you a few questions.

Henry:Yes,please.

Duke:May I ask what are you doing in this country?

Olive: And what’s your plan,sir?

Duke: Only thing at a time Olive.

Henry:Well,I can show you I have a plan. I only hope to find work.As matter of fact I landed Britain by accident.

Olive:How was that possible!

Henry:When I see back home I have my own little cog from which I got a lot of fun.Four weeks ago,which was a Sunday I was sailing out of the Bay.

(staring at the delicious food on the table)

Olive:Go on.

Henry:Over where?

Olive:You were sailing out of the Bay.

Henry:Oh,yes.Well,to the desk I found myself stick west the gave.The only thing I could run before all night.Next morning,I was just getting myself to lost and was picked up by a brig. Olive:and the brig brought you to England.

Henry:Yes,that’s right.I work my passage with an unpaid hand.That’s what…I wear somewhat unbelievable things.

Duke:you don?t need worry about that.

Olive:It’s possible advantage?Ha,ha.This is breathtaking!

Henry:I can’t follow you,sir!

Duke:Tell us what was your job.Adams?

Henry:The ship building firm when I arrived,I am thinking you might be able to offer me some kind of work ?

Duke:Patient,patient,Adams.

Excuse me.I have a question.Do you have any money?

Henry:Telling you the truth my bank account is zero.

Olive:Lucky,wondering luck.

Henry:It seem very lucky to you,gentleman.It is not very lucky to me.this is the idea of some kind of jokes,I don’t think it is really funning. Excuse me,I?m going on my way. Duke:please don’t go,Mr.Adams.You must think it very incentive if you even the bottle reason to pretend of this.Olive,give me the letter.

Olive:Wait.

The letter.

Henry:For me?

Duke:for you.

(亚当正要拆开信)

Oh,on,You mustn’t open it not yet.You must it at 2 o’clock. Olive:Not the moment before.

Henry: It’s jocularity?

Duke:Not,it’s not jocularity.Money in it.

Henry:Oh,on listen to me,I don’t want your charity.I only want honest job to work. Duke: We appreciate your honest character.That’s why we give this letter. (James open the door)

James,show Mr.Adams out.Good luck to you.

Henry:Why don?t you explain what is on about?

Duke:You will know soon at 2 o’clock Mr.Adams.Exactly,one hour and ten minutes. Henry:One hour and ten minutes.

James:This way,sir.

Duke:Mr.Adams.Do not open it until 2 o?clock,promise?

Henry:Promise,Goodbye.

Part II

Place:Restaurant

Characters: Henry Adams,Proprietor(boss),Waiter,Customer,Maggie,Mr.Clements

Proprietor:That one's reserved.This way,please. Take this gentleman's order,Horace. Henry: I'll have some ham and eggs,and a nice big juice steak with all the trimmings ,and make it extra thick.

Waiter:It'll cost a tidy bit.

Henry:That's understood.And a long cool tankard of ale.

Er ...Waiter,Same thing again ,please.

Waiter:Again?

Henry:That's right .And fill that up.Anything wrong?

Waiter: No,No,sir. He's asked for another portion.Ale and all.

Proprietor: Do you think he can pay?

Maggie:We'll have to chance it.

Proprietor :Serve him,Horace.But don't spare the gristle.

Waiter:Ham,eggs,steak,potatoes,beans,carrots twice.Trifle,Cheese,Coffee.Two quarts of ale.Three and ten pence.

Henry: Thank you .Would you mind waiting just a few minutes?

Waiter: What's there to wait for?

Proprietor:All right,Horace!

Henry: That was a wonderful meal. You know ,it's amazing how much pleasure you get out of simple things ... If have had to get along without them for a while .

Proprietor: Very interesting .And now perhaps if you'd pay the bill,I could attend to the other customers.

Henry: That clock of yours ,is it correct ?

Proprietor: If anything ,it's fast.

Henry: It's fast? How fast?

Customer:Two minutes.

Henry: Oh ,thank you .

Proprietor: Now ,I don't wish to be unpleasant,but would please settle the bill?

Henry: I want to... But you see...

Proprietor:The bill,please.

Henry: Yes ,I know ,the bill.

Proprietor: Exactly.

Henry: Well ,I don't suppose a couple of minutes will make any difference. Er...I'm awfully sorry ,but I don't have anything smaller.

Proprietor:Well ...Well....er.....er....just one moment .

(show it to Maggie)

Maggie:Oh!

Proprietor:Maggie ,DO you think it's real?

Maggie: Ask Mr.Clements.

Proprietor: Mr.Clements...er....Mr.Clements.

Mr.Clements: What's it ?

Proprietor: Would you mind just looking at this ? Do you think it is genuine?

Mr.Clements: Two notes of this denomination have been issued,but in any case it's hardly likely to be a forgery.

Maggie: Why not ?

Mr.Clements: It would draw too much attention to the owner .No forger want that . Maggie:But look at the owner ,Mr.Clements,he is in rags!

Mr.Clements: I can only assume he's a eccentric millionaire.

Proprietor: An eccentric millionaire!

Maggie: And you put him at the back of the room.Go and attend to him at once.

Proprietor: I'm sorry ,sir,I cannot change the note.

Henry: Oh, but it is all I have on me.

Proprietor:All! Oh,please don't worry,sir.It's of no consequence. No consequence at all.We are most gratified you should so much as step foot inside our little establishment .Indeed, sir ,I trust you will come here whenever you are seeking peace and quiet .

Henry: Well,that's very good of you.

Proprietor: Good,sir?It's good of you ,sir.You must come whenever you want and have whatever you like.The mere honor of your presence is a reward in itself.

Henry: I may not be passing this way for quite a while.

Proprietor: It would be a very poor thing ,sir.If I couldn't trust a gentleman as rich as yourself,sir.Even if you do pay larks(jokes)...upon the public in the matter of dress.As for the bill,sir.please forget it .It's of no consequence.No consequence at all.

Henry: Thank you very much.That's very nice of you .

Proprietor: Oh,it's for us to thank you ,sir.And I do ,sir...from the bottom of my heart... (all bow to Henry)

故事梗概:

故事发生在上世纪初的英国。一对富豪兄弟用一张面值百万英镑的现钞打赌,看这张钞票究竟会给人带来无尽的财富还是只是一张一文不值的“小纸片”。

很快,从美国来的亚当进入了富豪兄弟的视线。这个人的船在海上触礁沉没,他靠给其他船只做工来抵押船票才到了英国。现在他身无分文、饥饿难忍,这样一个穷人是再适合不过的人选了。于是亚当被请进了富豪家中。

富豪兄弟给了亚当百万钞票,并和他约定在一个月的时间里,亚当可以任意使用。但一个月后他必须把钞票原样不动地还给富豪,这样他可以得到富豪们为他提供的任何一份他想从事的工作。亚当糊里糊涂地接受了约定。

亚当无论去吃饭、购买服装都会因衣衫褴褛遭到人们的白眼。但当他拿出这张钞票时,人们不但向他大献殷勤,甚至连相关的费用都可以减免,因为在他们看来亚当是富豪,而且根本没有人可以给一张百万面值的钞票找零。

很快报纸上刊登出美国一位有着着装怪癖的百万富翁光临英国的消息,一时间亚当成为上流社会的焦点,无论是公爵、富商都以和亚当交际为荣,年轻姑娘们更是为了吸引亚当的注意而彼此间争风吃醋,亚当成为英国尽人皆知的人物。

但很快亚当陷入困境中。先是他欠下的债越来越多,之后饭店服务员和他开玩笑,将百万钞票藏了起来,瞬间股市大跌,人们相传亚当是骗子,要债的人挤满了整个饭店??

好在一个月的期限终于到了,亚当如释重负地将钞票还给了富豪兄弟。但亚当并没有接受他们为他安排工作,因为经历了大起大落,亚当早已厌倦了人们对金钱的追逐。尽管失去了金钱,但他却得到了

许多。
