Chen Huijun

We each long to do something great with our life. But what is greatness? How can a person really make an impact on the world around them? How can we ex-perience the quality of life? The

definition of the qual-ity of life may differ from person to person. The way for people to achieve a quality of life may vary from one another.

However one thing is certain, the quality of life is measured by little things.

"Every day we're called to do small things with great love." Thus claimed the U.S. President Gorge W. Bush in his inaugural speech. Through touching every little thing, Helen Keller knew the outer world, and longed for three days to see to emphasize sharply the values of life. And I still remember my childhood dream was to become a millionaire so I could bring about a happy life to my parents. But now it seems that by frequent going back home, or a simple phone call to my family on a very ordinary day or a letter enclosed with a smiling picture of me makes thern even happier. How much greater difference can these little things make than a million yuan.

The so-called little things are merely the causes of great things; they are the beginning, the embryo, and it is the point of

departure, which generally speaking, decides the whole future of the quality of life.

To strengthen the relationship with my friends, I always wonder, how can it really work without our mu-tual understanding and support by communication. To show my sincere appreciation for my

teachers'persis-tence in giving the lectures when they are ill, what can be better than extending a cup of tea to them during the break or a piece of greeting words. To fulfill my obligation to society, I'd like to begin from giving my hands and showing my love to those in need.

It is by studying the little things that we attain the great art of having a quality life. Life is long, but no matter how long it takes me to go, I should and will cover it little by little and

reach the climax of my life at last, for I believe constant dripping wears away a stone.

So enjoy your life by doing the little things, for little things are what inspire great things.

Thank you!

The Earth, the only Home for Human beings

Jiang Shengliang

Dear friends,

Good afternoon. I'm very glad to see you here. The topic of my speech is “The Earth, The Only Home For The Human Beings".

Do you know that dust storms had swept through North cities

several times this spring? Dust has enveloped the sun and turned the sky an eerie yellow. People haven't found a way to fight against the dust storms but to be in their homes and offices. Because a cloud of loess filled the whole sky, there were many traffic accidents, which loss in lives and property was beyond our estimates.

We know that China already produces 11 per cent of the world's greenhouse-gas emissions. We also know that the Huanghe River once dried up, the grassland of Inner Mongolia rapidly turns into desert and there are many cities where the water we live by is lacking. We can't forget that more than 4000 people who lived in London had been killed by thick black smog in the winter of 1952. We also are aware that nearly 50,000 species become extinct and 2.7 million acre lush, fertile cropland turns into barren land every year in the world...

These numbers are so startling; the scenes are too horrible to look at!

Of course, I am sure, everyone here like the blue sky and white clouds. There is no one who dislikes the clean river and verdant mountains extending a thousand li. We are eager to have a breath of fresh air freely. However, we have to deal with so much endless noise and breathe the air mixed up with dust. We have nothing to do but stride over so many sewage ditches...

This is the earth, our only homeland we human live on. It is the earth that supplies us with enough food, water and oxygen. It's also the earth that supplies us with deep enough atmospheric layer in order to protect us from the hurt of ultraviolet ray... Although the earth gives us all that she has, we still hurt her so deeply. She is covered all over with cuts and bruises. She is groaning and shedding tears. To our surprise, we human have been conscious that we will not survive if the earth remains to be hurt, but there is still so much sever deforestation and damage to the grassland. We still

waster raw materials, destroy forest for more arable land and don t save on water?

Wake up, wake up to reality. We have suffered so many heavy losses. Can t we come to realize our error? We must draw the lesson from them. We can t follow the same old road to ruin, and we can t sit here and watch our only home-the earth turning into another Loulan. Today, I stand here and want to call out at the top of my voice: the development of economy needn t pay the cost of

environment pollution. Please don t hurt our only home again. If the earth remains to be destroyed, if the land, water and atmosphere we lived by remains to be polluted, my dear friends, where will we go and live? So improving the environment is to save us human beings. Dear friends, let s begin to act now, act from us, act from trifles. I believe firmly that the earth will take on a new look if everyone tries one s best to do it.

My speech is over. Thank you!

My Definition of Failure

Mo Junhua

S-U-C-C-E-S-S. SUCCESS. Success is the catch-word of the times. It

goes without saying that almost all of us want to be successful. Like it or not, however, we must admit that it s not easy to achieve success. More often than not, we have to deal with its opposite, namely failure.

But first of all, what is failure? It is hard to define, because dif-ferent people have different answers. However, as far as I'm con-cerned, I think real failure is not to try hard.

It's commendable that you set your mind on the best and

con-stantly strive for it. At many times, however, it's unlikely that you'll do the best, because of the scarcity of No. 1 and because of the fact that the attainment of the very best involves many things, some of which are beyond your expectation. In addition to your own merit, that of your competitors also plays an important part. So it is a more sensible, but no less commendable thing for you to compete with yourself, not with others. You don t have to do best. But you should always try to do your best in whatever you are determined to do. If you have given it 100 percent, you are not a

failure, even though you are outplayed by others. Because you have given it 100 percent, there s nothing to regret, nor is there any need to blame yourself. Instead, you should give credit to yourself for trying.

I don t like finding excuses for our failures, because we haven t failed at all. Take myself for example. Last year, I enrolled for the Sports Meet in my university and competed in the 3,000-meter race. I did this not because I m gifted in or good at running, but because I wanted to fulfill a childhood dream. I had been an

in-competent student of physical education or P.E., ever since I was a primary school student. As a weak student of P.E., I never got a chance to participate in a sports meet. I envied my classmates who were good at sports. I used to dream of becoming one of them and displaying my skills in a sports meet. After I entered university, I spent much of my spare time on physical exercises, such as running, the long jump. Although I can run much faster than before, I m not capable of winning a prize or a good place in a campus-wide run-ning competition. In spite of that, I still entered for the event,

be-cause I wanted to challenge myself and fulfill my athletic dream. I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not going in for this race. But I chose to accept the challenge and face the difficul-ties. I trained hard for the race, so when I came out last but one in the competition, I didn t call my attempt a failure, because I had tried and struggled.

Real failure is not to try hard. “I will forgive myself if I fail; I won t forgive myself if I don't try”, because “It's better to have fought and lost than not to fight at all”.

Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic movement once said:“the most important thing in Olympic Games is not to win, but to take part, just like the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well.”

But what if we did fail in something? Simple. First, don t panic, because failure is not the end of the world. As the English saying goes, he who falls today may rise tomorrow. Second, try, try again, because nothing is really over until the moment we stop try-ing. So long as we persist and never give up, we will succeed eventually. No failure is sweet. However, just as bitter medicine cures sickness, failure may prove to be very instructive, so long as we can put it in perspective. There is a saying that failure is the mother of success. It's natural for us to get depressed for a

certain period of time, but we shouldn't inflate the importance of our temporary setback and be disheartened by setbacks, even never recover. We should be undaunted by failures and motivated to strive

even harder to succeed.

Real failure is not to try hard. It is my firm belief that one's earnest efforts will not be wasted. They will pay off either in other ways or at other times. In this sense, today's failure prepares tomorrow's triumph.

At last, let's bear Goldsmith's remarks in mind:“Our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but rising every time we fall。” Thank you all!

I think, therefore I am

Mo Junhua

Dear fellow friends:

Good morning. Today I m going to share with you the most valuable thing that I have learned at university.

I was born in 1977. But my life didn t begin in the real sense until 1999. Prior to that, I spent every hour, every day and every year doing what was expected of me , eating, sleeping, studying, playing, so on and so forth. I didn't have the idea of who I am, what I should do now and next or what life means to me. Never had I thought about these questions. This situation lasted for year after year. It underwent few changes even after I entered the university. And it was another two years later that I began to think about these questions, which are of great significance to me, From then on, my life turned over a new leaf, because independent thinking, which didn t have any place in my life, started to play an important part. First, thinking helps me to know myself, such as my dream,

interest, strengths and weaknesses. As we all know, every one of us has his own character, although we are all human beings. It is

therefore vital for us to develop a sense of identity, form our own opinions, make our own choices and take responsibility for our own destinies. We won t be the initiator of our action or in charge of our life, unless we think about our uniqueness and make our

individuality clear. To my joy, I ve started to do that. Now I set my own standards and regard them as my code of conduct rather than judge myself by how others estimate me or how much approval I m getting from other people. I won t live in the shadow of anyone else. I live my life in my own way.

Second, thinking stimulates me to treat life and time seriously. Man s dearest possession is life. It is given to him but once. So how we spend our life and time is a question we are supposed to ask ourselves. It s a pity that some people have never made an effort to seek the meaning of life. They live their own life, but not in a meaningful way. Most of them seem disoriented, not knowing what to

do or how to make use of time. To be honest, I used to be troubled by the same problems. However, as I learned to think, I came to know the purpose of life, which is by no means food, drink and

merrymaking. Now I ve made up my mind to be a diligent, responsible man. On the one hand, I m eager to give full play to my professional knowledge and live out my dream. On the other hand, I m trying my best to fulfill my obligations to society as well as my family and friends. In a word, I want to live a full, meaningful life. I hate to spend my time in vain. So I m working hard to challenge and

improve myself. It can be said without the fear of exaggeration that thinking has awakened my slumbering soul, transformed me into an enterprising young man.

It is therefore apparent that thinking is playing a very important role in my life. However, it can be painful at times. Although I spend much time thinking, I still cannot sort out some of the

problems I encounter. Consequently, I will get depressed. It seems that I m asking for trouble. Why not go and have some fun instead of taking pains to think? The reason is that its rewards far outnumber those momentary displeasure. Thinking is the key to life, the

gateway to psychological maturity, and the beacon to the road ahead. Leaning to think is the milestone in my life. It is the most valuable thing I learned at university. Now it has become an indispensable part of my life.

"I think, therefore I am."

Thank you!

How to be a Useful Youth for Our Country

Li Mingdao

Mr. chairman, ladies and gentlemen.

First of all, I must say that youths are the pillar of the country. We have the heavy burden of the duties of the times and we have something to do with the prosperity and decline of our country. Since we play such an important role, then, how to be a useful youth for our country? According to my humble opin-ions:

First, a good youth must have good health. In every walk of life, health is the foundation upon which our success depends. Good health makes us able to work hard and to stand firm, to strive and to

persist. Besides, we can be more fit for the task we are in, for the struggle of success, for the endurance of hardships, and for the service of our country.

Second, a good youth should cultivate good and noble character. Many young people with fine knowledge have gone astray. They do more harm than good to the society, and even to the country. They only seek for their own benefits and selfish interests. They have never learned to be moral. From this point of view, we know that virtue is extremely important to a good youth.

The third is patriotism. Patriotism makes a country strong, and also makes her history glorious. If the youth of a country are not patriotic, the country must be very thin and weak. History tells us how some countries of ancient times, ow-ing to lack of patriotism,

were conquered by other nations and how the people of the conquered countries became slaves under the yoke of their victorious masters. So we, youths, must show our love and respect to our country. We must be ready to sacrifice our own lives and do many other deeds which can bring benefits for our people.

And at last, I think a good youth should possess both fine

knowledge and industry. As we know youths will be the future masters of our country. We should have a good command of every kind of knowledge. The more knowledge we have, the more power we can do a great task.

At the same time, we should be diligent in our work. Mr. Ronald Reagan once said: "I do not believe in a fate that will fall on us no matter what we do, but, I do believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing." He wants us to believe in the struggle, not in the fate.

Though our country is now in difficulty, yet, we, youths, should not be despaired. Since we are the ones who decide the prosperity and happiness of our country and people, we should exercise our bodies, build our characters and enrich our knowledge. Then, I am sure the 21st century will be the century of the Chinese. Thank you very much!

A Dream That I Have

He Tingting

Good morning! Ladies and Gentlemen,Today, I'm so glad to come here. It's my honor to give the speech. I'm He Tingting, coming from A'Ba Tibet and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. As a Qiang girl. I welcome you to our hometown. Now I'll talk about my dream.

My hometown is a remote, lonely village, with verdant mountains and clean streams, full of fresh air... The sur-roundings is quiet and graceful. What a wonderful sight!

But I'm sorry to say it's so poor, so backward.

One day in a late autumn, my parents and I went back there

together, in order to call on my grandfather being ill. Getting off the bus, slowly we walked hard towards my hometown along a narrow winding path. Suddenly, the hap-py laughter of children interested me. I looked around, and caught sight of some children playing, aged 8-9. It seemed they were free from care. I went up to them, and asked, " Why aren't you at school now? Are you on leave?" One boy stood up and said sadly, " We don't have any teachers, No teachers teach us. Two years ago, we had a teacher from a city. But only two weeks later he went away. From then on, no teacher comes here any more. Also we have no school to attend here."

"Why don't you go to the city to study?" I asked. "My parents are both farmers, we haven't enough money." He stopped for a moment, and then continued, "We really hope for school." After hearing that, I couldn't say a word with a heavy heart.

Later, I thought it over for a long time. That's the children's fault? No. That's their parents' fault with no money? No. But I don’t really understand why.

If they could be at school like me. How wonderful it is. However, in fact they couldn’t be. What can I do for them?

Facing the children unable to go to school;

Facing the poverty of minority nationality regions;

Facing all these facts, suddenly, a bright idea struck me. From that moment, I have a dream, a splendid dream!

I dream, one day, I will be able to be a teacher and return to my hometown. I'll try my best to let the children in-to the school,

into the classroom. I'll teach them to read and teach them to write, with my patience, with my love, hon-estly. I'll turn them into the persons with a lot of knowledge.

I dream, one day, I can set up a school for children by myself; let these children enter the school. Of cause I'll hope to set up schools as many as I can, to let all the children enter the school. Also, I dream, one day, the students I teach will graduate from universities and take heavy responsibilities of building our hometown, building our motherland.

I dream, one day, all these will come true. And my hometown will become richer and richer, more and more beautiful.

That's my dream. I'u return to my mother school with my faith. Having this belief, I'u value the time, every hour, every minute, every second. I'll study each lesson well, and lay the foundation, in order to realize the hope of children's attending school, seeking for knowledge.

Having this belief, I'u break up a new path to achieve the goal. Having this belief, I'l1 have enough courage to change all the bad situation.

I believe that my dream will turn into reality.

As you all know, some years ago, we had a Hope Project, a lot of children have already returned to the school grounds.

We all know, our government decides to develop the western area. Our ent decides to develop areas in-habited by the minority nationalities. Especially, Our government decides to develop the education.

And I know, a lot of people in and out of our prefecture are working hard at it. Everyone is trying to contribute to our motherland.

So I'm sure, my dream will come true, at last! I believe that! Thank you!

面对着这些不能上学读书的孩子们;

面对着贫穷的少数民族地区;

Smile——The best Present

Zhao Hongyan

Dear teachers and fellow students:

Good evening. I m deeply honored that I have the opportunity to talk something about the topic “what is the best present to give other” with everyone here.

Different people always have different ideas about the same thing. We may probably get all kinds of answers to the question mentioned above, if we carry on a poll. A little child may regard the candy or

toy he loves as a gesture of friendship. Someone may think that a book or a piece of information he needs urgently is the best present. Even someone considers money is valuable... But to most people, even all people, believe it or not, smile is the best

present. The conclusion is not my fabrication. It can be proved by the experience of David, who is a successful businessman of America. “Warm smile is the best present to others, especially to those who are in bad situations.” David knew that it was a truth on a cold winter morning, which changed his life.

It was a cold winter day. Then David was still a nine-year-old boy, with thin, shabby and unfitted clothes, standing at the corner of the main street, just like the other hundreds of little beggars. In his little heart, he regarded the thing he was doing as the worst one, compared with all the other careers. But he had no other

choice, because his family was poor and he badly required a big sum of money. Mother died when he was five years old. Father worked for a rich man, earning money to bring him up. But the day before, he was suddenly ill. In order to send Father to hospital, he had to make money. But he wad so young that no factory would adopt him as a worker. So he had to become a beggar.

It was the first day that he was a beggar. He could not persuade himself to do like others, dragging clothes of the gentlemen or ladies passing by, following him or her until they get the money wanted. He just stood there, and watched the pedestrians quietly, wishing someone would have bestowed favor. It got dark and dark. Hunger, anguish, despair and shame made him almost shed tears. Just at that moment, he caught sight of a young man, who was very

important in his later days. From the first glance, David knew the young man was not the one he had been waiting for, because he was also poor, which could be easily judged from his appearance. His clothes seemed not much warmer than David s, and the suit on him was unfitted. David was sure that he himself had no hope to get any

money from the young man, but he could not remove his sight from the face. The reason was that the young man seemed so youthful, so happy and so confident. David gazed at him until he also paid attention to him. He came up to David and stopped. Suddenly a warm and bright smile appeared on his face. Then he said, “Sorry, little fellow, I have no change for you, but I could take you to my home and offer you a cup of hot coffee, if you like of course. ”“Thank you! ”David repaid his kindness with a smile.

That day, David took little money home, but he was not despaired any longer. From that bright smile, he knew there was another unfortunate man in the world, who lived so happily.

Thanks God! Father got well soon. Under his request, father sent

him to school, then to college. Now David need not worry about making living any longer, but he still remember that young man's smile. When he gives help to people who are in difficulties, he will also give him a sincere smile.

From the story about David, we can see the importance of smile. In a certain degree, smile means understanding, tolerance and comfort. To those who need help and comfort urgently, smile is just like the warm flame in cold winter and disperse the coldness in the heart. Smile is also like a lamp in the long night, it can light the way and show the direction out. Facing a warm smile, you will never feel lonely any more. Perhaps you can get the confidence to overcome the difficulties from it. Meeting one needs your help, if you think you can do nothing useful for him, please give him a bright and sincere smile. Remember, sometimes smile is even more important than money; smile is the biggest help to others!

Thank you all!

One of my Dreams:to Run a Travel Agency

Wang Yuan

This morning, I would like to argue for true ecological tourism, or eco-tourism. To me a true eco-tour is a tour that allows us to express our passion for nature and for our cultural heritage.

I love travelling. One of my most memorable trips was climbing the Great Wall. There, I cherished seeing people of all races and ages gathered on this ancient structure. I cherished seeing these people smiling to each other, making way for each other, and reminding each other to watch their step.

While I love travelling, I'm also sad to see the damage tourism has done to nature and to our relics. Many tour agencies like to label their business eco-tours. But they have cut down trees and filled up rivers in order to build roads, hotels and cable cars so as to attract tourists. And on their tours, some people pick

flowers, catch birds and throw away food that might poison animals. This is not eco-tourism at all. True eco-tourism involves

responsibility. As we enjoy the beauty of nature, we should also help protect it. Let me share an experience.

Once, I joined some young volunteers on an outing. The excursion took us to the peak of a mountain where we got a beautiful view of the city. We were, however, not ordinary tourists. As we were climbing, we were also picking up the trash left behind by other climbers. Finally, we used large bags to carry all the trash down the mountain.

The excursion was exhausting, but I believe, not a single one of us will ever litter any tourist spot. Moreover, when we were

cleaning up the mountain slope, we caught the eye of many others.

Some of them might see us as foolish, but more of them, I believe, will take note of the need to protect the environment.

My experience as an eco-tourist revealed many misunderstandings. 1 once telephoned several travel agencies to inquire about eco-tours. Here is how it went:

"Hello! I'm interested in the eco-tour you've advertised."

"Oh, yeah, eco-tour."

"I'm wondering if we should do anything special as eco-tourists." "I'm sorry??Oh, nothing. Just enjoy the scenery."

Every conversation ended up with "enjoying the scenery." No one mentioned "protecting wildlife", or "respecting local customs". None of them made any mention of responsibility and obligation on the part of tourists.

Like other students, I have had many dreams of what I would like to do after graduation. One of these dreams is to run a travel agency. In this travel agency, I would do three things.

First, I'd like to have a staff of people who love nature as they love their mothers and can pass on to the cus-tomers the same kind of love.

Second, I'd like to let customers appreciate the beauty of nature in those natural reservations, safari parks and wild forests and show them how they can contribute in return for the air, water, and nourishment that nature provides.

Last but not least. I'd encourage my customers to work as volunteers as I once did. They would live close to nature by

cleaning up the natural resorts and planting trees as mementos of their visit.

I remember when I was standing on top of the Great Wall. I could see in some distance many bare mountains with no trees there. Eco-tourism should be an experience of learning and offering; it should not be just seeing the famous sites and posing for photos. On

the flag of my agency, I would print this mott

Take nothing away except memory; leave nothing behind except trees.

Join my tour, my dear friends. 1 will make China green -- and make the world a better place to live in.

Thank you.

The Strength of trust

Xiao Yanzi

Boys and girls,

Good afternoon.

The content that I will give a lecture today is still about the subject that's unchanged since ancient times to now days, which is friendship. There have been thousands of explanations as for the word "friend". But I resolutely think that there is the best

definition to explain it, which is Trust. The story that I read recently makes my idea firm.

It happened in Italy four centuries B.C.A young man named Pi Sia was sentenced to death, because of having offended the tyrant. Pi Sia was a filial son, and he asked to see his old mother before death. The king promised him , but set down the condition that he must find another person to be in prison instead of him. The condition was so critical that it was almost impossible to be

realized. But Pi Sia did find such a man, who was his friend named Dameng. Then Pi Sia went home to bid farewell with Mother as he wished.

Days passed quickly, and the term of imprisonment was near at hand, but Pi Sia had not turned back yet. Most people ascertained that Pi Sia had deceived his friend.

It was a rainy day. When Demeng was sent to the execution ground, all persons watching around laughed at him, but Demeng himself was not worried at all. The rope was hanging on his neck, and just at the critical moment, one person ran quickly through the rain shouting loudly, "Please wait, I'm coming!" It was Pi Sia who turned back in time.

This was the most moving curtain in the world. Demeng took no care of himself in order to help his friend realize the duty, whose kind of spirit was moved one to tears. While Pi Sia did not hesitate to take life as the price for performing the promise, whose kind of courage was also rare to meet. My dear friends, do you know why Demeng was so calm before death? The reason was that he believed his friend Pi Sia would not do such despicable thing as deceiving friends. This depended on the strength of trust.

This is a true story that is enough to shock everyone. Especially to contemporary people who are surrounded by the benefit of themselves, it is more worth of pondering. Friendship is the

precious deposits of the human world and the coordinate of life, and it may keep the flowers of heart fresh and sweet forever. A true friend is large treasure of your whole life. When you are

downhearted, they may encourage you to do all to catch up with the others, and when you are proud of yourself, they may remind you of keeping a clear head with sincere advice.

However, In the modern society that regards the real interest as the most supreme power , friendship becomes fragile and stingy .It is common that good friends known several years fall out to become enemies, and the friendship also becomes the chip of business... In fact friendship will not die out, but people do not know to value it .The famous writer Bi Shumin once said in a piece of paper, " There is only one fruit in the tree of friendship, which is

Trust." Friendship is a kind of nutrition for people that is the most simple and the most luxurious at the same time, which needs irrigating with trust and true feelings. It is just like the flower living in the comfortable hothouse. Only with the attentive care, can it become more and more beautiful. In the modern and changeable age, we should abide by the an-cient rule, which is trust.

Friendship is so hard that it may exist forever as long as you treat it with heart.

Trust is one kind of precious feeling in the world. No one can buy it with money, and no one can get it by cheating or force. It comes from the innermost soul of people. Just like clean spring, it washes away the dirt of common customs and makes you pure and

self-confident. Moreover, it can clear away the obstacles in your heart and help you gain more friend-ship.

In the real life, what will be kept in the history is not material wealth, but mutual affection being loyal-hearted. Let us abandon suspicion, hate out of jealousy, and deal with friends in all

sincerity. Believing that our eyes will brighten, and there will be even more happy laughter and cheerful voices in our world.

Mother's Love

Wang Yuan

My dear friends:

Do you know what is the most precious and everlasting thing in the world?

Money? You may lose everything you have if you do not use money carefully enough. Youth? In one?'s long life youth is like a flash in the pan and no one in the world has the secret to keep his youth forever. Beautiful look? Many people pray that they can get hold of beauty, but it disappears far more quickly than they can imagine. And when they are in real trouble beauty itself feels helpless. A good job? As you grow older and your brain and hands cannot work as fast as before, it will become other people?'s wealth.

Then what is the most precious and ev-erlasting thing in the world?

When you are far away from your fam-ily and feel especially lonely, who will you think of? When you stand on the crossroad in your life and do not know which way to choose, who will you think of? When you encounter greater difficulties than ever and need other?'s encouragement, who will you think of? When you decide to make the greatest decision in your favorite course, who will you think of? Who gave birth to you? Who brought you up? Who shed cheer-ful tears when seeing you make achieve-ments? Whose

wholehearted blessing will be always with you no matter how far you will go?

Yes, it's mother that you will always think of and it's mother's love that will be always together with you.

I once heard a moving story about a mother. Two children were drawn into the flood and the situation was very dangerous. Their

mother jumped into the water without the least hesitation. But you know the moth-er could not swim at all. Jumping into the water means she might lose her life. But at that time she had no time to think about herself. She just wanted to try all means to save her children.

Maybe her courage moved the God. The miracle happened. She finally succeeded in saving her children one by one. And she, of course, felt extremely ex-hausted.

My friends, mother's love is the greatest love. Mother's love is the safest love. No matter you are happy or sorrowful, rich or poor, mother's love will always stay with you.

Thank you all!

From Monday until Friday most people are busy working or studying, but in the evenings and off weekends they are free to relax and enjoy themselves. Some watch television or go to the movie ,others participate in sports. It depends on individual interests. There are many different ways to end our spare time. Almost everyone has some kind of hobby. Some hobbies are worth a lot of money; others are valuable only to their owners. I know a man Who has a coin collection worth several thousand yuan. A short time ago he bought a rare ten-yuan piece worth 250 yuan. He was very happy about the purchase and thought the price was reasonable, on the other hand, my students collects match boxes. He has almost 600 of them but I doubt if they are worth any money. However, to my student they are extremely valuable. Nothing makes him happier than to find a new match-box for his collection.

I have many hobbies, such as reading, skating, and watching TV. But reading is my favorite hobby.

I like reading for three reasons. First of all, books introduce me to a new world, which is colourful and without time and space limit, Through reading, I can trace back. to ancient Egypt, the cradle of human civilization. It can bring myself to the United states, a glamorous land I have been longing to visit. Secondly, reading can better myself by showing me a new horizon. In the past years, most of my knowledge has been obtained from books. I have learned from many people by reading about their ideas on scithee, politics, life and society. Thirdly, reading bridge the gap between my dream and my goal. In order to succeed in my career in the future, I must keep reading, thinking and practising.

Reading has become part of my life. Every day, I spend some time reading books, newspapers and magazines. At night, I can hardly go to steep without a novel in my hand.

That’s what a hobby mean , I guess . It is something we like to do in our are time simply for the fun of it. The value in money is not important, but the pleasure it gives us

Speech for Candidate of Student Union

Since I came to the college, I have been holding positions of class and youth league union. I also have done some pragmatic work for the university and our schoolmates. During the communication with our schoolmates, I feel it deep that the cohesion of a unit lies in a developing and advancing collective, while the strength for it comes from sincerity, understanding and contributions. As a leader of student, one should have a firm belief with sacrifice. As a leader of student, one should be willing to make up the gap between man and man, idea and reality with his fierce feelings. As a leader of student, one should not be selfish. What he seeks for is to work hard and give himself up to the service.

I, as one of the thousands of students of Economy College, am proud of it. I would be more willing to take up the duty belonging to me. This is my initial hope. This is why I am standing here today.

I remember one candidate himself said loudly, "Should I leave the position quietly or be bold to stay?" During the last competition for student union. As a result, he was bold to stay for the position. To day, I would like to let everyone know that I hope that I will be kept for the position. Even though I fail, I won't leave quietly and angrily out of spite because I am a member of Economy College, and because my roots are in the Mei Campus.

No mater where I go, Mei Campus always stays with me and my deep feelings to it always keeps in me. I would like to work heart and soul, for my love of Mei Campus. I earnestly hope to contribute my feelings and fervently hope to share the happiness and be concerned about the worries with every one of Mei campus.

*My Attitude towards Marks

For our students, marks are above everything. Teachers will judge us from our marks. With marks we can be enrolled into junior middle schools. With marks, we can be enrolled into senior middle schools. With marks we can be enrolled into college. With marks we can be enrolled into postgraduate and doctor studies. Still with marks we can be graded and be allowed to go abroad for further studies. Our parents will be strict with us with the marks. Our society judges us from marks. However, sometimes we students compare one another with marks directly. We are completely controlled by marks. We like them and we feel sorry for them. But what attitude towards our marks should we take?

Truly, marks functions cannot be underestimated. In terms of test in our study, marks are fair and real. That is the reason why we say, "Everyone is equal before marks." However, I didn't think marks are the sole standard to judge the success or failure of studtens in exams. Sometimes, marks more than ten or less than one or two in our exams comparing with others means not everything. The success or failure in exams will be influenced by experience on the spot and the examinee's health etc. Once in a while one cannot fail in exams. "Success or failure is common for military." I think everyone is familiar with the famous saying. Don't you think such will be the case with our study? In exams, one cannot be "never-defeated general". Even though one will be very good in everyday study, he cannot succeed in every exam sometimes. We can get proof from the fact that the very best one we call "Number One Scholar" in the entrance exams for college and ordinary middle school and specialized secondary school over the years is not eminent above all others nor top student in every study. As a matter of fact, "high marks" and "ability" are not unified. Some time ago, a new phrase "high marks but poor competence" came into being. Once I happened to meet such a teacher as this. It is said that the teacher just graduated from a far-famed key university. But his teaching result is much less than that of the one who just graduated from a not-well-renowned college. When lecturing, the teacher only repeated what the textbook says, which was very dull, so the students' interest in learning was not aroused. His teaching was short of unity of teaching and learning. At present there is a fact that we know a few brilliant and top colleges graduates are not qualified for their posts. The reason for it may be lack of the ability to combine knowledge learnt from books with pragmatics in their work. Students of this kind will be successful in every exam but they won't be able to use freely their knowledge in their posts. Don't you think it waste training such persons for the country? From the above, I can say marks are not absolutely authoritative for some. If we neglect training and developing the students' ability and competence and if we only

seek for the high marks, we will be absolutely wrong. We should take an objective attitude towards the marks. Neither should we neglect them nor should we overvalue them like a God.

Never Seeing through Your Colorful Life

Our life is like a polygon rhombus. Some are happy with their success; some are unhappy with their failure. We can not be successful without the experience of failure. Why do you lose heart once you meet with failure? Why do you think you yourself will see through the vanity of life since then? A young and inexperienced fellow will be doubtful about everything he sees in the society, because he feels that what he reads from the books and what he sees in the real world seem to be two extreme different worlds. He will say everything seems hypocritical to him. Form him, "truth, good-and-honest, virtue" and "self-sacrifice for justice" and "self-sacrifice for saving another" seem hypocritical. They are all like castles in the air. For him everyone in the world seems to dress himself in a mask as flowers that will be blooming soon. When he meets with all these in the world, he cannot help himself but to sign, "I would rather live in the leisure world alone in life." But actually, when one sees the world itself, he makes great progress, which means that he is experienced and knowledgeable. However, God enables us to reform the world, "why don't you seek for self-development" by "reform" the world, on the base of your experience and knowledge about the world?

"Seeing through your life," means ending your life. When you think every life is such,

you will always complain and lose heart. When you act like this, you will lose your spirit, your belief and idea. On the contrary, all those who seek and struggle with their firm belief will say with smiles "How happy we are!" even though life may be cruel and hard on them.

Blood, Sweat and Tears

Winston Churchill

May 13, 1940

On Friday evening last I received from His Majesty the mission to form a new administration.

It was the evident will of Parliament and the nation that this should be conceived on the broadest possible basis and that it should include all parties.

I have already completed the most important part of this task. A war cabinet has been formed of five members, representing, with the Labor, Opposition and Liberals, the unity of the nation.

It was necessary that this should be done in one single day on account of the extreme urgency and rigor of events. Other key positions were filled yesterday. I am submitting a further list to the King tonight. I hope to complete the appointment of principal Ministers during tomorrow.

The appointment of other Ministers usually takes a little longer. I trust when Parliament meets again this part of my task will be completed and that the administration will be complete in all respects.

I considered it in the public interest to suggest to the Speaker that the House should be summoned today. At the end of today's proceedings, the adjournment of the House will be proposed until May 2l with provision for earlier meeting if need be. Business for that will be notified to M. P. 's at the earliest opportunity.

I now invite the House by a resolution to record its approval of the steps taken and declare its confidence in the new government. The resolution:

"That this House welcomes the formation of a government representing the united and

inflexible resolve of the nation to prosecute the war with Germany to a victorious conclusion."

To form an administration of this scale and complexity is a serious undertaking in itself. But we are in the preliminary Phase of one of the greatest battles in history. We are in action at any other points-in Norway and in Holland-and we have to be prepared in the Mediterranean. The air battle is continuing, and many preparations have to be made here at home.

In this crisis I think I may be pardoned if I do not address the House at any length today, and I hope that any of my friends and colleagues or for mer colleagues who are affected by the political reconstruction will make all allowances for any lack of ceremony with which it has been necessary to act.

I say to the House as I said to Ministers who have joined this government, I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I say it is to wage war by land, sea and air. War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us, and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy.

You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word, It is victory. Victory at all costs-victory in spite of all terrors-victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival.

Let that be realized. No survival for the British Empire, no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for, no survival for the urge, the impulse of the ages, that mankind shall move forward toward his goal.

I take up my task in buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men.

I feel entitled at this juncture, at this time, to claim the aid of all and to say, "Come then, let us go forward together with our united strength."

Enjoy Yourself While Fulfilling Responsibility

In my 18 years of life, there have been many things. University days are the best part of them. I can never forget the days when I stepped into my university. I was impressed by its garden-like campus, its enthusiastic students and especially its learning atmosphere. I at once fell in love with it.

After the arduous military training, I get absolutely absorbed in my studies. The classes given by the teachers are excellent. They provide us with information not only from our textbooks but from many other sources as well. They easily arouse my insatiable desire to take in as much as I can.

Frankly speaking, at first I had some difficulty following the teachers. However,

through my own efforts and thanks to my teachers' guidance, I made remarkable progress. Now I've benefited a lot from lectures and many other academic reports.

Learning is a long process; I'll keep exploring in the treasure house of knowledge to enrich myself. This summer I got out of the ivory tower and entered the real world.

A publishing house offered me a part-time job in compilation and revision.

At the beginning I was belittled by my colleagues. But they were really surprised when I translated seven English articles over 5,000 words on only one day. Gradually, they began to look at me with respectful eyes. In their opinion I turned out to be a useful and trustworthy colleague.

I also realize that only those who bring happiness for others can be truly happy. So I often take part in activities concerning public welfare. I once went to a barren mountain village with my classmates. We taught the kids there who could not afford school. While showing them how broad and how civilized the outer world is, I was deeply touched by their eagerness to learn, their honesty and their purity. I couldn't control my tears on the day when we left. The precious experience with the poor kids made me aware of the responsibility on the shoulders of us, future teachers. Besides study and social practice, there are entertainments as well. I do body building every day, hoping to keep healthy and energetic. We also write a play and put it on in our spare time.

Campus life is the most splendid time. But different people have different choices. The majority of students cherish their beautiful season and cherish the hope that one day they'll become outstanding. But there are indeed some students still under ignorance. They gather together for eating, drinking or playing cards. They're busy in searching for a girlfriend or a boyfriend. They forget completely about their mission as college students and the hope of their motherland.

Finally, I do hope everybody can try their best to become a worthy citizen of the country. I do hope everybody can become the backbone of our nation and make great contributions to society!

Knowing the Consequences of Choice

Over the past Spring Festival, I got involved in a family dispute. Right before I got home, four satellite channels of CCTV were added to the 14 channels we had already had. In prime time at night, they all had interesting shows. Therefore, the five of us-my parents, my sisters and I-had to argue over what to watch. Finally, we agreed that we should watch the "most interesting" programme... If we

could agree what that was.

However, all of us there remember that for a long time after we had TV, there were only one or two channels available. The increase in options reveals an important change in our life: the abundance of choice.

Fifteen years ago we all dressed in one style and in one colour. Today, we select from a wide variety of designs and shades.

Fifteen years ago, we read few newspapers. Today, we read English newspapers like the China Daily and the 21st Century, as well as various Chinese newspapers. Fifteen years ago, English majors took only courses in language and literature. Today, we also study Western culture, journalism, business communications, international relations, and computer science.

The emergence of choices marks the beginning of a new era in China's history; an era of diversity, of material and cultural richness, and an era of the rebirth of the Chinese nation.

We enjoy the abundance of choice. But this has not come easily.

About 150 years ago, China was forced to open up its door by Western canons and gunboats. It has been through the struggle and sacrifice of generations that we finally have gained the opportunity to choose for ourselves. The policy of reform and openness is the choice that has made all the difference.

Like others of my age, I'm too young to have experienced the time when the Chinese people had no right to choose. However, as the next century draws near, it is time to ask: What does choice really mean to us young people?

Is choice a game that relies on chance or luck? Is choice an empty promise that never materializes? Or is choice a puzzle so difficult that we have to avoid it? First, I would like to say: To choose means to claim opportunities.

I am a third-year English major. An important choice for me, of course, is what to do upon graduation. I can go to graduate school, at home or abroad. I can go to work as a teacher, a translator, a journalist, an editor and a diplomat. Actually, the system of mutual selection has allowed me to approach almost every career opportunity in China.

Indeed, this is not going to be an easy choice. I would love to work in such big cities as Beijing or Shanghai or Shenzhen. I would also love to return to my hometown, which is intimate, though slightly lagging in development. I would love to stay in the coastal area where life is exciting and fast-paced. I would also love to put down roots in central and western China, which is underdeveloped, but holds great potential.

All of these sound good. But they are only possibilities. To those of us who are bewildered at the abundance of opportunities, I would like to say: To choose means to accept challenge.

To us young people, challenge often emerges in the form of competition. In the next century, competition will not only come from other college graduates, but also from people of all ages and of all origins.

With increasing international exchanges, we have to face growing competition from the whole outside world. This is calling for a higher level of our personal development.

Fifteen years ago, the knowledge of a foreign language or of computer operation was considered merely an advantage. But today, with wider educational opportunities, this same knowledge has become essential to everyone.

Given this situation, even our smallest choices will require great wisdom and personal determination.

As we gain more initiative in choice making, the consequence of each choice also becomes more important.

As we gain more initiative in choice making, the consequence of each choice also becomes more important.

Nuclear power, for instance, may improve our quality of life. But it can also be used to damage the lives and possessions of millions.

Economic development has enriched our lives but brought with it serious harm to our air, water and health.

To those of us who are blind to the consequences of their choices, I would like to say, To choose means to take responsibility. When we are making choices for ourselves, we cannot casually say: "It's just my own business. " As policy makers of the next century, we cannot fail to see our responsibility to those who share the earth with us.

The traditional Chinese culture teaches us to study hard and work hard so as to honor our family. To me, however, this family is not just the five of us who quarreled over television programmes. Rather, it is the whole of the human family. As I am making

my choices, I will not forget the smile of my teacher when I correctly spelled out the word "China" for the first time, I will not forget the happy faces of the boys and girls we helped to send back to school in the mountains of Jiangxi Province. I will not forget the tearful eyes of women and children in Bosnia, Chechnya and Somali, where millions are suffering from war, famine or poverty.

All these people, known and unknown, make up our big human family. At different points, they came into my life and broaden my perspective. Now as I am to make choices for myself, it is time to make efforts to improve their lives, because a world will benefit us all only if every one in it can lead a peaceful and prosperous life.

Regain Confidence

By Li Jun (李军青岛海洋大学)

I received a devastating blow to my self-confidence in the first interview of my college years. I applied to be a host in our Student Acting Troupe and felt confident that I would be accepted. But one of the panel members told me: "You seem inadequate and you are a little vertically-challenged." My life has never been the same since. I used bigger heels to complement my height and psychological maneuvers and tricks to hide my lack of confidence. But no matter how hard I tried to look the part, there was still something missing.

As president of English Club, I organized the rehearsal of Snow White for an English party. Unfortunately, we could not find an actor to be the last dwarf. It had to be someone who was humorous by nature and fluent in English. Suddenly, all eyes turned to me, and I knew I would have to be the dwarf. To my great surprise and delight, once on stage, I was totally absorbed in the performance and my humorous nature was put to full use. As the dwarf, I was a big hit.

Yes, each of us is only one among millions of others, but each of us is an individual and each of us is unique. Cultivating our individuality will transform

our lives, making of them a kaleidoscope of new colors and textures.

A world deprived of diversity would be a bland and boring place. The real tragedy is not being short or shy or ugly, but having your identity lost in a world in which everyone is a clone of a model cool boy or a flawless charming girl.

Given a choice, I would rather be ugly than live in such a world. I'd rather be a genuine dwarf accompanying a Snow White than be a Snow White among nothing but Snow Whites. I would rather be myself. I would contribute my individual and unique colors to create a more diverse universe. Please, be yourself.

Responsibility is a Badge of Honour for Youth

Facing this audience on the stage, I have the exciting feeling of participating in the march of history, for what we are facing today is more than a mere competition or contest. It is an assembly of some of China's most talented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that are preparing themselves for the coming of a new century.

I'm grateful that I've been given this opportunity, at such a historic moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well. Though it is only within my power to tell about my personal experience, and only

a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, I believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years. In my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.

The teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she expected a lot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself.

One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, "Could you please explain this to me? I want very much to do better this time. " I started explaining, and finished in a hurry. Pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, I ran off quickly. Nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam. And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer. No one ever knew about the little task I failed to fulfill, but I couldn't forgive myself. I simply couldn't forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, "Why didn't you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for you? Why didn't you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that I would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?"

I was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for I began to understand the word "responsibility" and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society. Later in my life, I continued to experience many failures. But never again did I feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that I have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best I can.

As I grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, I began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself. New buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.

New ideas, new information, new technologies. People can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds. Society is becoming more competitive.

Words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. Such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.

Such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it. Yet in the meantime, many problems still exist. We learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting. We hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can't even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and luxury cars.

We buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is

the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the expense of morality and responsibility.

Such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.

Such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to take action and solve the problems. History has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.

Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinary student. Probably I'll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. But this doesn't discourage me any, for I know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it's going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that I will be living.

Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom will not attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered by posterity. But that doesn't discourage us any, because we know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.

I can't ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn't had the same opportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopeful world tomorrow.

It is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us. We are not going to evade that responsibility. We are going to let people down. And people, far and near, will hear of us. Frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, So let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.

A s everyone knows,English is very important today. It has been used everywhere in the world. It has become the most common language on Internet and for international trade. If we can speak English well,we will have more chance to succeed.Because more and more people have taken notice of it,the number of the people who go to learn English has increased at a high speed. But for myself,I learn English not only because of its importance and its usefulness, but also because of my love for it.When I learn English, I can feel a different way of thinking which gives me more room to touch the world. When I read English novels,I can feel the pleasure from the book which is different from reading the translation. When I speak English, I can feel the confident from my words. When I write English,I can see the beauty which is not the same as our Chinese...

I love English,it gives me a colorful dream.I hope I can travel around the world one day. With my good English, I can make friends with many people from different contries.I can see many places of great intrests.I dream that I can go to London, because it is the birth place of English.

I also want to use my good English to introduce our great places to the English spoken people,I hope that they can love our country like us.

I know, Rome was not built in a day. I believe that after continuous hard study, one day I can speak English very well.

If you want to be loved, you should learn to love and be lovable. So I believe as I love English everyday , it will love me too.

I am sure that I will realize my dream one day!

Thank you!

We all come to the world, but why do some of us make great achievements known forever and why are they remembered forever even though they leave the world? And why do some leave the world without anything valuable to his generation and the people? Every one of us will hope to have a significant and valuable life. But what kind of life is both significant and valuable? Answers to the questions are ?? "If you cherish your value of your own life, you will create something valuable for the world." Johann Goth said. "The life value should be judged from his contribution rather than his profession." Einstein said. Lei Feng, a communist soldier, said, "one lives to make others a more beautiful life." As we all know, Marx is an outstanding and great man. He founded his brilliant and scientific theory of communism. The theory guides the ways for the human being's liberation. Marx said, "If we can elect one suitable profession, we won't be demoralized with its pressure, because we make sacrifice for human beings. Only by this way will we not be addicted to the joy of narrow-minded and individualism. Our happiness belongs to thousands upon thousands of people. I see, although it may be unknown, our cause will never be forgot forever. Even when we depart to God, the kind people will tear down upon our ashes." When he said these words, he was only 17 years old. He meant his word with his deeds in his late lifetime period. After his death, on his 100-birthday anniversary, the proletarian and the revolutionary people of the whole world still cherish the memory of Marx and mourn him respectively. It is his distinguishingable contribution to the mankind that his life is that significant. It is his great devotion to the human being that his life value is beyond measure. We also know that Lu Xun is a man of great. Without his nobility "Fierce-browed, I wooly defy a thousand point fingers, head bowed like a willing ox I serve the children", and without his spirit of his loyalty and devotion to the last for the bright future of the Chinese people, his life would not have been so significant and so great. Actually, didn't those regarded as essence of human who live forever in the hearts of people make great contributions to the cause of the people? Wouldn't the people remember those whose great achievements for human are recorded in history? We know for certain that not every of us will be a second Marx or Lu Xun. However, a person of noble aspirations will do solid work. Struggle continuously and effortless. He will try to make his greatest contribution in his shortest time. He will try what he can to bring benefit to the people in his lifetime. We'd say it is impossible for one to live alone if he isolates society and people. If he hopes to make a benefit life, he will bring benefit and make contribution to people. As a socialist youth, he will devote his life to the cause of communism in

order to make a benefit life. Moreover, we say that a value of life will be only in direct proportion to achievement and contribution he makes to our society. In our real life, we can see many revolutionary martyrs die young for the people. Don't you think they cherish the life? Yes. They do. They are sentimentally attached to life; they are full of hope and desire. But they confront the death bravely and resolutely in order to make many more people live. Their brilliant status will be living in the hearts of people. They die glorious and great. The life of those who die busy about his lifetime without any achievements can not be compared with their life. In our real life, we have many cases like those. Life is endless and tackling key problems will be continuous. Let's take these as examples. Mr. Jing Zhuying worked for the Chinese science causes to the last of his life. Mr. Zhang Hua sacrificed his own young life for the sake of others, which set a good example of the communist. Mr. An Ke died for fulfillment for the duty as a citizen. Ms Zhang Haiti, compared to be Paul of our time, worked very hard and faced frustrations of her life, though she was disabled. She still continues to live on bravely. All these are the strong of their life. Their value of life is precious. My fellow students, don't you say what a beautiful life they have? Beethoven once said; "I must learn to control my life which will never make me give myself up. Oh, If only I can live more than thousands times!" Paul Cocking also had a golden saying, "Life is but one." I think every youth of us keep this in our minds. let's turn it into reality with our deeds. Let's not be a man full of promises but without any deeds, like Lusting, one of the characters by Dougeshefol. My fellow students, let's not wander. Let's not hesitate. Only lament and vexation does not mean consideration and exploration. Only lament and vexation does not mean advancing and does not mean mature at all. Let's not kill our lifetime by playing cards. Let's not waste our youth by drinking. Let's not destroy our will without any achievements. Let's make great contribution to human. And only by these can we create benefit life. Every one will have to die and every body will be rotten. But every one may make achievements and contributions. We hate being rotten. Let's brighten up! Up! And up!

Frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, So let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.

There is only one failure called never try

What is success? Different people have different ideas. You may say success is the realization of one's hopesand justified goals.Under such notion, however, people have different understanding of success because the hopes and goals they cherish vary from one another.

There may ba so mangy kinds of success in the world that i can't enumerate them all.So maybe it's difficult to set a defination for success. But ,in my opinion,it's easy to define what is failure---there is only one failure called never try.

Everyone has his dreams but not all of them dare to make it come true.Just like a huter aimed at his game but never fire or a soldier who crying out but never toward. They are afraid of failure that they might encounter.

That reminds me of a game we used to play.We put the chairs in a circle. And the player must pass through th barriers made by the chairs with his eyes covered up.He would be allowed to memorize the positions of the chairs. But as soon as his eyes is covered,we will remove all the chairs.

Sometimes, our life is just like such kind of game.We tried our best not to bump against the barriers. But these things turn out to be existing only in our minds. And sometimes,we made them for ourselves. We dare not to participate a competition or get

cold feet to call the boy or girl we love.It turns out that the barriers we made for ourselves lead to the loss of a lot of things.

Don't give up trying untill you really bump against the chairs.Even so,at least you have a place to sit on.

Some people would say i tried but i failed to pass an exam or to find a job.I'am a failure .But on the contrary,i prefer to call these things setbacks instead of failures. There is no failure in a winner 's dictionary.

It doesn't matter i you have a tumble , what really matters is that you lose the courage to stand up and give it another try.The process is full of tears and pains.

Just look back on how we learn to walk when we are young. If we gave up easily, today we may only crawl .If Tomas Edison gave up easily in finding a proper material to make a bulb, maybe we will live in the darkness after the sunset.Perhaps we need some torches to go on with our competition.

I,myself,a shy person by nature who easily suffers from stage fright, had to get up my courage to take part in this speech contest like this.I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not coming here. But i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. Now here i am.I will try my best because i know i would broaden my horizon and make a lot of friends here.

I still remember the first time i sang a song at a party ,the first time talking to a foreign friends, the first time made a speech on the platform, etc.Although at first they almost scared me to death, but when it was over,i feel it's worthing trying. There is a saying goes,'people often regret what they didn't do instead of what they have done.'

Forrest Gump often says,'life is like a box of chacolate ,you never know what you are gonna get.' I would say if the chacolate you got is not your favourite.Don't get upset but try the next.

Tomorrow will be better

I was born in Beijing and live in Beijing, and I love Beijing very much. When I heard that Beijing will have a chance to hold the 2008 Olympic Games I feel very happy and excited, and I hope I can do something useful to build Beijing into a beautiful and energetic city.

In the twenty-first century, environment is becoming more and more important, so we have "GREen Olympic" as a slogan. Of course slogan is just a goal, the most important thing is we should do some things to make it true. Such as assort the trash, save

the energy and so on. We are still students now, so we can't do anything really big.

But if everybody does something good for our environment we could make Beijing more

beautiful.

In fact the things we can do are easy. Like not littering the useless batteries

everywhere, assort the trash which we want to throw away, and also protect the animals

and plants around us, because they are important parts of the energetic Beijing.

Luckily I had a chance to take part in an activity that is we planted 5 trees in our

campus. My classmates and I worked very hard. This activity doesn't only plant trees,

but also contribute to our environment. Look at the trees, I believe, tomorrow there

will be more trees and flowers standing in Beijing and give Beijingers a beautiful

environment.

We are all Chinese people, live on the earth. We have only one capital, just like

we have only one earth. If we don't beautify our environment, who will? Good

environment depends on good human consciousness. We should say that protecting our

surroundings is not easy. That's why I'm standing here to summon people do it.

the 2008 Olympics games is coming, this is a chance for us to show the good environment

we have to other people. If we do from the bottom of our heart, Beijing's tomorrow

will be more brilliant it will have blue skies, cleaner rivers. Who don't want Beijing

to become more and more beautiful? If we do our best, tomorrow will be better!

Thanks

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,Good afternoon!

Before I introduce our cultural programs, I want to tell you one thing first about 2008. You're going to have a great time in Beijing.

China has its own sport legends. Back to Song Dynasty, about the 11th century, people started to play a game called Cuju, which is regarded as the origin of ancient football. The game was very popular and women were also participating. Now, you will understand why our women football team is so good today.

There are a lot more wonderful and exciting things waiting for you in New Beijing, a dynamic modern metropolis with 3,000 years of cultural treasures woven into the urban tapestry. Along with the iconic imagery of the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall, the city offers an endless mixture of theatres, museums, discos, all kinds of restaurants and shopping malls that will amaze and delight you.

But beyond that, it is a place of millions of friendly people who love to meet people from around the world. People of Beijing believe that the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing will help to enhance the harmony between our culture and the diverse cultures of the world. Their gratitude will pour out in open expressions of affection for you and the great Movement that you guide.

Within our cultural programs, education and communication will receive the highest priority. We seek to create an intellectual and sporting legacy by broadening the understanding of the Olympic Ideals throughout the country.

Cultural events will unfold each year, from 2005 to 2008. We will stage multi-disciplined cultural programs, such as concerts, exhibitions, art competitions and camps which will involve young people from around the world. During the Olympics, they will be staged in the Olympic Village and the city for the benefit of the athletes.

Our Ceremonies will give China's greatest-and the world's greatest artists a stage for celebrating the common aspirations of humanity and the unique heritage of our

culture and the Olympic Movement.

With a concept inspired by the famed Silk Road, our Torch Relay will break new ground, traveling from Olympia through some of the oldest civilizations known to man-Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Byzantine, Mesopotamian, Persian, Arabian, Indian and Chinese. Carrying the message "Share the Peace, Share the Olympics," the eternal flame will reach new heights as it crosses the Himalayas over the world's highest summit - Mount Qomolangma, which is known to many of you as Mt. Everest. In China, the flame will pass through Tibet, cross the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, travel the Great Wall and visit Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the 56 ethnic communities who make up our society. On its journey, the flame will be seen by and inspire more human beings than any previous relay.

I am afraid I can not present the whole picture of our cultural programs within such a short period of time. Before I end, let me share with you one story. Seven hundred years ago, amazed by his incredible descriptions of a far away land of great beauty, people asked Marco Polo whether his stories about China were true.He answered: What I have told you was not even half of what I saw. Actually, what we have shown you here today is only a fraction of Beijing that awaits you.

Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that Beijing will prove to be a land of wonders to athletes, spectators and the worldwide television audience alike. Come and join us.

Thank you, Mr. President. Thank you all.

Now, I would like to give the floor to Mr. He

Respected teacher, dear schoolmate, everybody is good! I am XX. I am honored very much today, can stand on the platform, is campaigning for class leader together with schoolmates, hoped that schoolmates support me. I first thank teacher for me this opportunity, lets me be able to demonstrate own talent in this stage. This time campaigns for class leader, I am the process give careful consideration only then make the decision. Because I have had work as class leader's desire, but does not have the opportunity throughout. When I hear may campaign for class leader, my mood is incomparably excited, wishes one could immediately this news to tell each person. From the very beginning, father and mother very support me, afterward they opposed identically, said: “like this will affect your study---------” I said: “from the participation, I wants to try again, to look that I do have this ability!”After several relapse's ideological struggles, I decided that certainly must campaign for, certainly must work as class leader! I like, I choose! I campaign for class leader's goal handle class's and grade's each kind of matter, does well between schoolmate's relations. Class leader is a class collective lead goat, has the responsibility to manage the good class and grade business, everywhere maintains the good class and grade honor. Schoolmate who does not study regarding these, carries on the prompt advice. If I can work as class leader, I meet treat each schoolmate equally, to teacher reported that schoolmates' opinion, transmits teacher's difficulties to the student. I guarantee at any time, in any situation, thought that “schoolmates thought that

anxious schoolmates anxious”; If I am class leader, I will study by oneself in the class to prevent schoolmate who these speeches and will make the petty action randomly, will let study by oneself the class maintains peaceful; When between schoolmate has the contradiction, I can think Baogong such, unselfish, complains about in vain a good person in no way, also lets off an unprincipled person in no way. The initiative mediation contradiction, turns swords into plowshares; If I have been elected as class leader, I will lead everybody, will handle the meaningful matter, to have difficulty schoolmate to offer the compassion. “the train runs quickly, depends entirely on the vehicle head harness”! If I have worked as class leader, I am willing to work as a small ox, diligent, bears the burden of responsibility, serves wholeheartedly for everybody! In the usual life, I will set an example, everywhere will play the model leading role, the good study method, the good custom will give everybody, will progress together! Is teacher in the eye the good student, is in the parents heart's good child, is schoolmate the side the good partner. Schoolmate , please throw a that sacred ticket for me, although I now am not most outstanding, but I in the future will certainly be best! my lecture, has thanked everybody!

Everybody is good I am *** first day class leader candidates. Napoleon has a famous saying: “does not want to work as general the soldier is not the good soldier”. I believed that not only class leader title, not only a corona, behind it has the substantive content, is closely linked with schoolmates. Therefore, if I were elected, I will not let this “be long” become an unwarranted reputation. Leader should be puts up between teacher and a schoolmate's bridge, is teacher's primary assistant. However, I from start first, requests itself strictly, the model function; Next, I, in any situation, will be able to think that at any time schoolmates thought that anxious schoolmates anxious, will dare to insist the principle, will dare to seek the just rights positively for schoolmates. Class leader takes a class collective to take the lead the character, I have ability to handle class's and grade's each kind of business. everybody has the ambition, everybody positively on own initiative serve for other people. We only then practice unceasingly, can form the good school spirit, the school appearance, can enable us first day (4) class this collective unceasingly to go forward, gains the victory unceasingly, from wins one moves toward magnificently step by step. I meet the able to withstand testing, believed that under everybody's joint effort, our class and grade can certainly do splendidly, becomes the entire school advanced class and grade. my lecture finished, thanks everybody!

I have a dream

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of bad captivity. But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years

later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we’ve come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.

Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.

I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, live up to the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color if their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day down in Alabama with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, one day right down in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning.

My country, ’ tis of thee,

Sweet land of liberty,

Of thee I sing:

Land where my fathers died,

Land of the pilgrims’ pride,

From every mountainside

Let freedom ring.

And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York!

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!

Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slops of California!

But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi!

From every mountainside, let freedom ring!

When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! free at last! thank God almighty, we are free at last!”

Objectively Speaking

People in this world can be divided into two categories: those always working and those always making comments. The working ones never have time to idle away. Some may run a hotel, or do some business; some may open a factory or set up a school; others may be absorbed in scientific research, or devoted to military affairs or political issues. Right or wrong, successful or failed, they are always fully committed to their careers. Facing all kinds of risks(not because they neglect them, but mainly because they have the courage), and shouldering the responsibilities, they march forward, bravely and cautiously. They are risking their luck and their lives as well. They have neither time nor energy to comment on others. While attentively planning the future, they devote themselves wholly in hard work, leaving the embroidered stories and malicious gossips flying in the air. The commenting ones, however, usually work less, and even if they want to work sometimes, they simply are not capable enough. They are no better than anyone, but show admiration to nobody either. They blame either the heaven, or the earth, but never themselves. They dare not to take any risks, but they are also afraid of any hard work. They are

gossip-mongers, making stories and spreading rumors, making you feel annoyed and upset. It's not because that you have hurt them, or disturbed them, or hindered them, but because you are working. If only you are working, he is there commenting. Everything is hard at the beginning. You have just started a new cause, needing encouragement and support, yet he is there pouring a jar of cold water or blowing a gust of chilly wind, making you worried or perplexed. But once you have succeeded, he is there again sharing your success without feeling a little ashamed of the discouragement he had given you.

Many people don't like using their mind but enjoy echoing the views of others. They often take it for granted that the working ones are wrong while the commenting ones are definitely right. However in all fairness, how can it be true? Not working itself is already wrong, and it is a blunder to hurt the hard working people.

From ancient time to the present, many great men have been commented on endlessly. Take the cases of Confucius, Emperor Qinshihuang, Empress Wu Zetian, Gengis Khan, Dr. Sun Yet-sun, Chairman Mao, Deng Xiaoping, etc.. Both positive and negative criticism have been made about them. They not only enjoyed compliments but also suffered slanders from all over the world.

When commenting on what's right and what's wrong, the commenting ones themselves don't really know what is wrong and what is right. They are simply demanding perfection. When criticizing the others' inability, they themselves are actually unable to do anything, but simply pretending that they know better. This can well be compared with the actors and spectators. A new program is always followed by large amounts of criticism from the spectators. But if a spectator is given a chance to perform, a disaster will surely happen. Diners are always commenting on the skills of the chefs while readers are always criticizing the writers. Another case in point is the forty-chapter sequel of A Dream of the Red Mansions , which were written by Gao E who did a nearly perfect job. Nevertheless there are always such people who claim to be the experts on the novel, criticizing the latter forty chapters as a wretched sequel to a fine work. What if we ask them to write the sequel? I'm afraid they can only make it worse. It's easier said than done.

Capable and wealthy people are always the focus of the society.

Capable people are usually marching ahead of others and may not be properly understood, hence causing various kinds of comments, more criticism but less support;

Capable people can easily succeed, thus causing both admiration and comments, more jealousy but less appreciation (only their good luck is recognized);

Capable people can be sought for help and attract the attention of the society, thus causing a lot of comments, more complaints but less gratitude (even though they didn't

ask anyone for help, if only they were not able to help others in a satisfactory way, it's already their fault);

Capable people can also suffer setbacks (some even experience ups and downs many times), experiencing fully the warmth and coldness of the human world, more hurts but less helps.

Wealthy people are non the easier. No doubt there are cruel-hearted rich men, but it is also wrong to think that no wealthy people are kind-hearted. They are capable of devising and managing and they often need to take risks to get the chance. But who care about these?

Whenever a group are dining or entertaining, everyone will take it for granted that the rich should pay the bill instead of going Dutch. If the rich doesn't pay, then he'll definitely be regarded as a miser;

Among good friends and relatives, the rich should often help the poor, otherwise he will surely be blamed for his cruel-heartedness;

From the ancient times, people have been used to killing the rich to save the poor, without thinking about how the rich became rich and the poor stayed poor. The policy of “allowing some people to get rich” has balanced people's mind to some extent, but there is still a long way to go before we can get rid of “the hatred toward the wealthy”.

Capable people or rich people are just human, neither sages nor perfect men. They have their own faults, and they may also commit mistakes. But objectively speaking, some mistakes are forced on them, which are the expectations of the public. They are expected to do this or that, but when expectations become disappointments, they have to take the blaming. In fact, it's the public's fault to demand for perfection or counting on unrealistic expectations of the rich.

I encourage people to work, even though they may commit mistakes.

I advise those enjoying commenting to make some effort to do something for the others.

I hope people can make comments objectively instead of subjectively, without going to extremes, and not out of preference.

I also hope that the hard-working people do not care too much about what the others say, even what the others criticize. You should believe that public opinions will finally decide what's right and what's wrong. What we need is just time.

As everyone knows,English is very important today.

Thank you!
